When setting up my streaming PC it gave me a lot of hassle and research to do. At first I thought "huh, I have an Elgato HD60 Pro in my main rig, and spare PC parts from upgrades... let's make a streaming PC!" In my head, using the HDMI from my main PC to the capture card, then using the HDMI output on the capture card to my monitor would be the least of the issues. I am getting a video signal, and it's recording it so what could go wrong? Well here's a list of things I researched and eventually fixed: - I want my mic plugged into my main rig, and to talk to my friends on Discord through my main rig. - Having desktop audio split to my headphones AND the second rig. - Using the HDMI output on the capture card locked me to 60fps (when I use a 144Hz monitor) and introduced noticeable input lag. - Using a dedicated HDMI to the capture card, and two cables plugged straight into the monitor. How would I duplicate the DisplayPort and HDMI to the capture card and keep audio? - Using RDP prevented me from using an external 3.5mm aux in and optical in. And I wanted to keep RDP because it allowed me to stream my mic natively while plugged into my main rig. - Creating the least hassle possible (i.e. using only 1 mouse and 1 keyboard for both rigs, file transfers, and generally making it seamless and quick). - Fixing x264 lag on an i7 6700k which is more than powerful to handle x264 at 1080p 60. - Getting video, audio (mic and desktop duplicated), and file transfers to all be duplicated to both systems with no fuss or pre-setup. It took a bit, but I can now happily just turn on my streaming PC, launch a remote desktop and stream straight away with NO side effects. I can record videos and access the file instantly on my main rig. If anyone is having ANY issues with setting up a second rig just leave a reply. :)

OOOHHH THAAANK YOU LINUS!!! this was what I needed, streaming explained in a clear way!! I hope you guys at Techquickie or Linustechtips can make a video on bulding a budget or not so expensive streaming pc :D Love from Mexico!
You can completely transcode with your GPU, for those who has a 4 core CPU and struggles with streaming. As long as you have a GPU better than a 1050 ti, depends again what you want to stream. Usually games like Fortnite, CS:GO, Overwatch, League of Legends can be streamed on a 1050 ti, but it will be quite hard for the GPU, so get at least a 1060 or an RX 570 or better.
Recently upgraded to a Ryzen based system thanks to this video. Running a Ryzen 7 1800X with a GTX 1060 6GB. The parts are on their way, gonna love putting them together.

Love your work guys; keep it up! OXOXOX
hint a 4th gen i5 is still better at gaming. plus if you use gpu encoding with a nvidia gpu only takes about a 5fps degradation still leads to better performance than ryzen
Have you ever considered setting your phone down when shooting a video? I'm going to start a new drinking game where you have to take a shot every time Linus silences his phone.
If I was building a system with streaming in mind, I'd go Ryzen7 1700 instead, because the price gap is worth it in my opinion, but you're right, the Ryzen5 1600X (or indeed non-X) is a very capable chip as well. Before you take purchasing advice from me though, do bear in mind that I'm the kind of guy that preordered a Ryzen7 1800X at full price, so maybe take it with a grain of salt... :p
Robert Faber true the 1700 is the r7 bang for buck I'm lucky to have gotten a 1700x for the same as a 1700 (maybe even just slightly more expensive than a 1600x)
I'm current streaming pretty well with the 1600, I've only had an issue with a couple of games, but I think it's because they are poorly optimized and some of my settings.
Interesting question. I've never seen videos streamed greater than 60fps, so I assume you'd just capture at 60Hz like normal and it will drop some of your frames. The monitor shouldn't make a difference, it doesn't affect how many frames your GPU puts out. Even people with 60Hz monitors will be outputting varying framerates from their GPU, so there must be a way to deal with it.
Lets say i get el gato: Ok so gpu conected to el gato, el gato conected to my monitor, BUT stays at 60 hz because is a HDMI port Out from del gato. That means my Gaming monitor wont have the 144hz refresh. How does one overcome this issues. is not that i want to stream at 144fps, i want to stream at 60fps BUT my monitor stay at 144hz
Happy Farmer If you’re streaming with software, e.g. OBS, on the game host, you just set the streaming rate and resolution to whatever is needed; it’s independent of the gameplay. If capturing with hardware on a second PC, you could try setting the graphics card to use two, duplicate, outputs. One via DP at 144Hz and the second via HDMI at 60Hz. If it works it would allow you to continue gaming at 144 while streaming from the 60 Hz source; just ignore the elgato’s passthrough. There is a 4K elgato PCIe card, just released that uses an HDMI specification capable of that higher bandwidth.
Appreciate the informative video. However, it would be a god-send if you make a demo video. Plus, you have loads of stuffs laying around. Plz plz plz 😀
I usually watch Techquickie and LTT as just computer porn, but I actually didn't know you could stream video over LAN. It's really useful to me. Thanks for alerting me to that!

NDI now works pretty solidly. I would recommend that as a free alternative.
11/10 people who watch this are non-streamers
Man I stream... at least I used to before Jtv shutdown.
ummmm
No shit, it's saying what you need to start stream
i stream 🤚🏼
Now we need a tech quickie lesson on capture cards.
So... can I use my laptop for the streaming thing and the tower for the game itself? (My laptop has a i5 7th Gen and a GTX 1050 4gb).
Yeah that should work. I'm going to be doing that soon as well.
@@shakeandbake3355 me too
Is your i5 a quad core or dual core with threads? Laptops are retarded and have an i7 inside that's a dual core... its stupid xd
@@kajmak64bit76 ikr so dumb
@@calvitocalvon1711 ikr
Next do the evolution of USB types please I would love that video
😂😂 who saw the forum post about the mom whose son wanted a 1050 ti and she was looking for a cheaper option.
The sarcasm in the intro is killing me... on the inside -_-
Will my Ryzen 5, rx 590, and 16gb of ram be able to stream well? (I am wanting to stream Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice)
It will stream great. R7 and RX580 better duo
Yes but u need decent internet
How about a detailed tutorial on how to do this for the avg gamer? I'm sure a lot of ppl would be interested.
one day I'll be a streamer streaming modern games
kappa
No one know bc u have 0 view
OOOHHH THAAANK YOU LINUS!!! this was what I needed, streaming explained in a clear way!! I hope you guys at Techquickie or Linustechtips can make a video on bulding a budget or not so expensive streaming pc :D Love from Mexico!
"ryzen 7 or better" amd havent released anything new yet so good one linus
This comment has aged like milk.....
Thanks for watching Techquicke! Click the subscribe button, then enable notifications with the bell icon, so you won't miss any future videos.
Recently upgraded to a Ryzen based system thanks to this video. Running a Ryzen 7 1800X with a GTX 1060 6GB. The parts are on their way, gonna love putting them together.
or you can use integrated graphics (i.e. intel graphics) to encode the stream. cpu and gpu free for game.
@Super FURIOUS Gamer make sure to enable igpu in bios first then choose intel quicksync in obs for example. it works for me
2018 MASTERUPGRADES: Dumb intro gone!
1440p60fps!!! Love it.
Brought to you by the same people who fail every week to broadcast The WAN Show on time, at the right volume, with a focussed camera, with correct overlays in a timely manner _etc. etc. etc._
Adolescent halfwits manage to stream more successfully from their bedrooms than LTT from their top-spec media studio!
Love your work guys; keep it up! OXOXOX
FINALLY! A GOOD video talking about this
Thank you very much!
Hint: You need Ryzen
hint a 4th gen i5 is still better at gaming. plus if you use gpu encoding with a nvidia gpu only takes about a 5fps degradation still leads to better performance than ryzen
Logan .Kes hint: the viewer experience is worse on most Intel consumer systems.
Logan .Kes I can provide proof if you need it.
CyberianWolf viewer experience? Shadow play has better encoding plus you will at least have better gaming performance on intel
Logan .Kes No video evidence with numbers and the like.
Have you ever considered setting your phone down when shooting a video? I'm going to start a new drinking game where you have to take a shot every time Linus silences his phone.
tbh the Ryzen 5 1600x doesn't seem to do too badly either.
Really appreciate the helpful ideas :)
what if i have a 144hmz monitor, what kind of capture card would i need for my streaming pc
How does one overcome this issues. is not that i want to stream at 144fps, i want to stream at 60fps
BUT my monitor stay at 144hz
Happy Farmer you plug one display port into your monitor and one HDMI cable to the capture card with a mirror of the main display
Nice PSA, really helpful Linus
when youre pc so weak can only stream csgo 50 fps and minecraft....
Get a second, cheap, PC
Appreciate the informative video. However, it would be a god-send if you make a demo video. Plus, you have loads of stuffs laying around. Plz plz plz 😀

great video. Thank you

I usually watch Techquickie and LTT as just computer porn, but I actually didn't know you could stream video over LAN. It's really useful to me. Thanks for alerting me to that!
