    There has never been a time when it is easier to build your own electric guitar than the present. And, make a good one - using Dylan pickups.

    I appreciate that these videos are available to watch later. I'm nearly 2 weeks behind on my Dylan videos. Thanks again Dylan and Leslie.

    Couldn't have been a more relevant video in my recommendations. I just got one of those necks you see on Amazon for $50 bucks by some fly-by-night Chinese company with a name that looks like spilled alphabet soup. I thought it was sketchy but figured I'd take a risk and it paid off. The product is no worse than the necks on the bigger import brands and it's surprisingly good for the price. If you're willing to put a little work in you could save $70-100 dollars compared to even the least expensive alternatives e.g. Mighty Might, Solo, etc.

    Definitely bought a cheep ebay neck when I built my guitar last year, but didn’t do anything too crazy to it. I was pleased with the quality but would love these extra tips in the future.

    Damn you!! I play clear red Ludwig Vistalite drums.... but now you're making me putting pressure on the guitar player to get a clear guitar as well!!

    Solid technique for level & crown frets. The same person turned me on to the Z-file.

    I just bought some files but I'm anxious about filing down the fret ends on my Epiphone Explorer. They aren't bad, but they are noticeable. Fretwork terrifies me in general. Swapping pickups and electronics is no sweat, but I've never messed with the necks before. My Tele really needs a level and recrown. I keep telling myself to go easier than I think I need to and that will leave room to adjust. I really wish my pawn shop, knock-around Squier Bullet strat wasn't so well set up so I'd have a proving ground.

      I'm in the same situation, and I've watched dozens of videos and read several threads, and you should use a much larger beam to avoid sanding more in some zones (I'll use a sanded down in order to be totally flat spirit level) and don't do what Dylan does at 4:25 (and towards), if you don't stay parallel to the centerline of the fretboard (he follows the fretboard contour lines), you won't keep the original fret radius.

    What's the neck radius? Most of the ads for these kinds of necks don't mention that measurement. Thanks in advance.

    I'm confused and have a question:
    You use the rocker and mark the some of the frets, then you use the maker on all the frets and use the leveling beam. Seems like leveling beam should be done before doing the rocker?
    I really like the idea of "tapping" the high frets with the back of a screwdriver handle to verify frets are lowered. Do you think it would be a good idea to use some super glue to glue down the frets that move lower?

  • @rb032682
    @rb032682 3 года назад +3

    I got tired of paying up to $100 for a fret leveling and general setup. I bought a couple Stew-Mac aluminum radiused leveling beams. It only took a few fret levelings to break even on the expense of the radiused beam and the fret re-crowning files. I have found that leveling the entire fretboard works better for me than doing the rockers and spot leveling.

    • @rb032682
      @rb032682 3 года назад

      And, doing my own fret levelings lets me get some tight tolerances, if I'm not too impatient.

      Same here. Too many quack "Luthiers" in my town. After twelve years of playing, I figured that I would learn and do the work myself. I wish I've done it years ago.

      @RB How long of a beam are you using? I see a 4.5", 9" and 18" available on stew mac.
      I am adding to my guitar repair/maintenance kit as I like learning and teaching myself instead of having someone else do the work.

      @@jeffreymccrickard2347 - I have two of the 18" extruded aluminum beams, one @10"radius and one @ 16"radius. I bought them about 15 -16 years ago, when they weren't as expensive. I haven't played a gig in over 10 years, so my guitar work has slowed down quite a bit. Now, I want to fix up my guitars to give them to my sons and grandchild(ren).

    Thanks for the video. Nothing wierd about a mahogany neck on a strat! Well, not in a bad way anyhow. I like weird.
    Still nothing on your website about (dylan built) guitars, I'm guessing that you're not really focused on it anymore and if you'll still do it, then you'll charge premium to do a one-off. You're showing us how to do it instead, we should be grateful, fair enough.
    But are there any quality yet reasonably budget friendly builders you would be comfortable to recommend to take a body and a neck and a bridge and a pair of your P90s and put it all together correctly? Also would you have any thoughts on wiring a couple P90s with a blend knob off a jazz bass in place of the usual 2 position switch? Is that more or less a drop in mod, and are all blend knobs created equal?

    Hey love your vids btw great pickups they are awesome 👌
    Got a query- I've been thinking bout getting (very) cheap in price, quality looks good, strat and tele necks and bodies off aliexpress, China, $20 buck I saw both scalloped and normal fingerboard necks, fender copies, some debate in reviews about heel dimensions but as long as there's wood to take off and not the other way round then that's easy and if the grain is going the right way toovery important, as long as the truss rod is working and easily accessed so I don't wreck the wood around the opening, and the neck is flat and grain is the right way(I think I already said that, must be vwery impoartant 🙏 ) on the necks then it's a doable job, getting to my query- are there any Ali express sellers you know of that are trustworthy, usually a month and a half expected shipping to the UK, but that's fine I'm just getting 3 of each to make a triad gang of guitars hmm think I'll make that my brand name... idk what is your take on these knock offs?

    What do you mean 19 to 1

    • @jeffreymccrickard2347
      @jeffreymccrickard2347 3 года назад

      That's the ratio of the tuners. The 2 digit number tells you how many times you have to turn the tuning key’s button for the string post to make one full revolution. The bigger the 2 digit number, the more precise tuning.
      Hope that makes sense 😁
