    There’s also a fun little thing with the “other RPGs have forced exp” argument and it’s that most of them usually have 3 to 4 party members out in battle at ONCE vs Pokémon where 90% of all battles are 1v1s. This is actually an important distinction for why it’s okey in other RPGs as in their cases, there are more instances where the individual party members are active at once and in many instances most obstacles in those other RPGs tend to have certain mechanics where a single universal brute force strategy is not enough to beat the entire game which makes party wide experience more acceptable. With Pokémon, most obstacles can be brute forced effortlessly with a high powered super effective attack so theirs basically no incentive to ever consider switching to use other Pokémon most of the time when you can one shot the opponent outright.

      A good traditional RPG gives each character a defined role, so if you have more party members than there are active party slots, you want the benched members to keep up so that the player can tag them in when they would be useful. Pokemon does not encourage the same level of experimentation in the story mode, they just straight up tell you which of your attacks are advantageous these days and make it even easier for you to steamroll the opponent. Pokemon have differing stats and moves, but it barely matters in casual play. The fine strategy in Pokemon is reserved for PvP, which most RPGs do not have to account for to be fair, but that does not mean that the campaign should always be babbys first RPG easy mode. Casual players probably never make it this far either because team prep is boring, a massive pain in the ass, and you have no incentive to interact with the breeding mechanics at all during normal progression. I think that Pokemon switching to mainly double battles would be a good step, because you actually have to worry about team synergy a lot more so it opens up room for strategic play over facerolling the boss battles with a type advantage exclusively. Balancing exp and giving options are a whole 'nother can of worms to be dealt with, but you gotta take things one step at a time.

    Back before EXP share was an option I enjoyed having it on most of the time because I always had multiple low leveled Pokemon that I wanted to train at once. But not giving me the option especially when doing another play through just takes all the fun out of it. It just takes all the attachment you get to your Pokemon away from you, they get leveled up by doing nothing and you never get to have any meaningful battles with them. I just... I don't understand why there's such a discourse surrounding the Exp.Share's implementation. The Exp.Share we now know was optional when it was first introduced in X/Y, I don't understand why restoring that option is a bad thing? Not to mention it's not even a difficult thing to program, have it on by default and it'll function the same as it does now but people can toggle it on/off as they please. Level scaling isn't an issue, if someone is turning the Exp. Share off then they're either wanting a challenge or they're over levelled. It's silly not to include the option but this is the same company who think putting accessibility options behind random NPC's is totally fine.

    Bdsp could have been my favourite 3D Pokemon games, but there’s so many small things that add up and mark it down, mainly forced exp share that made me avoid battles to not over level or keep switching my team out, the forced affection bonuses that you have to force feed Karen’s herbs to stop it, and following Pokemon not only being bad the second game in a row, but increasing the before mentioned affection rate. The best part, they’re all things past games have done better. I still really like these games, but I don’t love them, which is a shame because I really wanted to. With the new Exp. share EVERY pokémon gains the EV from the battle, so if you wanted your Ferroseed with zero in speed but fought a Rattata with it on the 6th slot, well... you have now a Ferroseed with 1 EV on speed that could have gone to other stat.

      HARD AGREE. This is probably one of the lousiest aspects of not being able to turn it off, especially since the remakes have *gym leaders* with EV trained mons. Like, the game is legitimately acknowledging that EV training is important, and you can't go through the game without stacking up random EVs on your entire team. Sure, BDSP has unlimited vitamins now so training is no big deal (although they could have just... Brought back horde battles? I don't know why they keep scrapping good mechanics from previous games.) but you still need the friendship berries to erase those old EVs in the first place, and those, unlike vitamins, have to be grown, and the in-game clock prohibits the use of time-travel to expedite berry growth.
      It's bonkers that games like XY had some really great ways to EV train a Pokemon in mere minutes and now it's like, alright lads, grind for cash, buy up those dank pharmaceuticals from Veilstone, and just force-feed your team steroids to get them ready for competitive battling. Gonna be honest and say this is the first Pokemon game I've purchased on the Switch, so I can't speak about Let's Go or SwSh, but I had a good time in XY and SuMo even if I had a few gripes. Probably because there still felt like a modicum of choice presented to the player.

      Most JRPGs don't have competitive play, so you're not expected to actually build stats for any reason other than completing the story. The characters are just there to be a party and rarely if ever outside of pokemon treated as customizable individuals. Pokemon is the only JRPG I can think of where each potential party member is treated as an individual, in and outside of the story intent.

    Anohter thing about Exp Share in Pokemon and most ohters JRPG´s is that, most Partys in ohter JRPG´s also need ohter ways and managment to gain strengh, like Skill Tree´s, Gear/Weapons, Stats increase training and more. Your typical JRPG requires more than just leveling your characters, there is more depth in those. A normal Pokemon Playthrough doesnt rely on things like EV´s or Held Items. I've also never heard this in any arguments in favor of Exp Share toggle, but it really should be brought up. The Exp Share mechanic is actually sharing EVs (as well as experience) across the player's party. For those who are trying to raise a diverse team (and especially for those trying to raise a COMPETITIVE, diverse team), this can be HIGHLY problematic. I've had pokemon in modern games that never see the light of day (never entered in a battle from the moment they're hatched) end up FULLY EV TRAINED because of the Exp Share. Nevermind the fact that the EVs are in places I never wanted them to be so I have to use friendship berries or the sand spellcaster in IoA to fix this. (Thank god for paying more irl money along with additional in-game currency to fix a problem, amirite?)
    In terms of the "other JRPG" argument, other JRPGs don't have an EV system that influences growth. So there is that, in addition to other points I've noticed being brought up.

      Same here. My only issue with the permanent Exp Share is that the difficulty does not scale up to compensate for the amount of levels your team gets, making the mid to late game too easy. It seems as if they designed the games and forgot to take the Exp Share into consideration when setting up the difficulty. Had they done that, maybe the permanent Exp Share wouldn't be an issue.

  • @Naruku2121
    @Naruku2121 2 года назад +2

    I do kind of miss having to do it the old fashioned way, on one hand training up a new member of your team as the player helps with growing fond of that new member, but on a more practical side, it helps in seeing how well that pokemon would perform seeing the ends and outs of it through multiple battles to see if it's worth keeping or if you're new it could help you get more familar with their advantages and disadvantages.
    And while that can still be done even with the presence of the EXP share, honestly at that point you could probaly get by with not having to really ever use nothing but your 'favorite' main Pokemon and the others just coast on by like boxed mons that can gain exp. And while that's fine if people wana play like that, there are people who don't and it wouldn't hurt to have the option for those who don't.

  • @taiga738

    Another issue I have with the EXP Share is that it used to be an equipable item meant to be used on one pokemon at a time, though I think in some games it may have been possible to get more transferred in from other games. Not only would it help to restore the ability to toggle it off but also to toggle which pokemon in your party it does and doesn't apply to now that it's a feature that applies to the whole party rather than a held item. It's a shame to see a once well liked training tool turned into such a persistent inconvenience that can no longer properly serve its original function.

  • @chrizzel28

    Honestly I genuinely like the experience share as it works these days, I think it was a change that made the games more fun for me. But I really do wish it had been something you can toggle, even if I believe my playstyle to be the most common one it takes almost no effort to appeal to certain other playstyles too.

  • @JoseF420
    @JoseF420 2 года назад +5

    It's sad how, despite following the exact same formula since its origins, Pokémon used to try and add something new to the base to change the experience. Now all they're doing is removing as much things as they can under the excuse of making the game more friendly towards casual players, ignoring that what makes Pokémon fun is the option to play it the way you want to play. It's also unsettling how a boolean in the source code cannot be toggled at all and was intentionally left there.

    Okay honestly, the perfect XP share to me is three toggle modes:
    On: Front mon gets 100%, back gets 50% (I also think this is in BDSP already)
    Lite: Front mon gets 100%, back gets 25%
    Off: Front gets 100%
    I like the XP share, I just feel it is too strong and the game isn't balanced around it, but this feels like the perfect lazy design work-around. Which like, lacking and easy fixes should be in character and should be present.

    And one of the things that makes the Exp Share so different nowadays is that experience isn't split evenly across all who gain it anymore. Even before it became forced from LGPE onwards, X and Y's revamps made it so that any Pokemon who directly participates in the battle gets 100% of the yield while anyone getting it through the Exp Share earns 50%. Even Gen I's Exp All system split the load amongst everyone in the party.
    And on the subject of grinding, I miss being able to earn EVs through Exp Share. It made things a lot easier if you've got multiple Pokemon that need a boost in the same stat.

  • @matteste

    I don't understand these fanboys at all. All people want are options that are completely 100% reasonable and are 1000% in the realms of possibilities for the devs. A simple on/off feature that even a intern can program. We simply want to play the game we want too. Also I don't understand how people have a problem with grinding in Pokemon mainly because there is no grinding. You've never needed to grind just to be able to complete the games. If you fight the regular trainers you have more than enough experience to beat the game. Unless you're doing a self imposed challenge or are purposely handicapping yourself, or you're training up a new Pokemon late game you've never needed to grind in any Pokemon game. Plus in DPP you have the Vs Seeker to rechallenge trainers.

    Also, it's not like you HAVE TO mantain disabled the experience chare forever, you can easily shorten grind sesions with that object but use it when not. Not to mention exp. share is very suboptimal for specialized training, which would not be an issue if the football minigame was still a thing.

They don't want challenge, they don't want to think, they just want to scream and react to themselves doing something regardless of how worthy of a feat it is.

    I really don't understand why they took away the optional side of it, I like the XP share because I'm more interested in playing to see the story than playing to beat everyone so the XP share makes the battles go by faster to get to the duologue, but I know some people don't like that so there should be the option to switch it off, you literally make no one mad by having more OPTIONS, that's what the game should be allowing you to make it fun but you start angering people when you restrict it

    Why would Pokémon gain Exp by doing nothing? It doesn't make any sense! You can't be strong by watching others battle!
