This is Jeremy Clarkson driving the GTR R34 in how Japan took over
At the time this car was the most advanced on the road apart from high tech super cars

And all this was in 1999! This car was truly ahead of its time.

for real, the fact that it even has a port for exporting data to your computer is so well thought, reminder that this car is made before windows xp existed
And now for a decent one you have to shell out $300k.
countach enters the game
Yeah it's good for a Japanese car
Imagine picking this up on 1999 in Japan 🇯🇵
The value for these cars are still growing it’s worth.📈
U know they weren’t only sold in Japan? They got them in other Asian countries and while we didn’t get the r34’s officially in australia (u had to import them), they were sold in New Zealand
@@bobw2 I think he just means that if they're JDM imported cars their value goes up
@@tripwire3992 so people would pay more for a skyline sold in Japan instead of the exact same car but sold in another country? The cars weren’t changed at all when they were sold in other countries except for a couple
@@bobw2 that's the state of the market these days
@@bobw2 I’m talking about living in the year 1999 when these cars are released.
Today(I lived in the United States) are still illegal till 2024. Finding these cars are rare to buy, unless it’s been registered as for show and display. also, the price for these cars are getting expensive than a Lamborghini.
Holly freaking shit! The insane power slide! The insane angle! I was convinced he would spin out. But as he said the computer stepped in and brought it back in..
To explain what Clarkson is talking about, the AWD system in the Skyline GT-R is actually RWD under normal conditions. When it detects slip, it will push up to 50% torque to the front wheels. This means adding grip for corners and improving acceleration on launches. This is the same system (plus improvements) as the one in the R32 GT-R from 1989.
@@Iukini no shit! I already knew what it was.. but never seen it irl. R32 is set up to handle FR setup but more mechanical than digital like R34.
@@christopherhernandez78 yeah you can read up on the differences between the E-TS and E-TS Pro on Wikipedia, but the basis of the Pro version is the original one from 1989. I've driven both the R32 and R34 GT-Rs, but I've only pushed the R32 enough to feel it truly kick in. The R34 is updating speeds far more often and also working on individual wheels.
@@christopherhernandez78 Well your comment certainly suggested you don't have a clue.
The only difference between the R32 version and this version is the RWS moved to electronic vs hydraulic and the transfer case locking speed was increased.
There is no mechanical vs digital feel.
@@Iukini Nissan/ Infiniti still uses that rear wheel drive setup! Love it
This car looks so incredibly good especially from the side. The rear part is so well done along with all the proportions,it is a joy to look at
It is just pure pornography. But seriously, the Skyline GTR is really awesome, and sounds really awesome too. If I had the money, I would have one for sure. A bloke in my village has a black R34 and I basically have to change trousers every time I see that bloody car.
The UK V-Spec looks better on one side because of the larger cooling intake on the passenger side front wheel overhang
Still think the R32 is the best looking skyline
It’s up there with the best looking cars but the RX7 takes the cake for me
The Supra, NSX and RX7 were better looking. Personally I find this car ugly. Extraordinary performance, a six in the looks department
Yea 50.000£, hehe, totally
It cost around 50k when this came out?
About the same as a modern Nissan GTR then
That didnt age well...
In malaysia now cost a million
It cost most than 150 thousand now 😂😂😂
1:16 take in he said "it's like being suddenly fitted with gods feet". in Initial D anime series, Kozo Hoshino aka God Foot drove an r34 gtr vspec. THAT'S CRAZY. might be a reference or just a coincidence.
Fully coincidence, initial d stage 4 is yeaars after this
@Spooks lmao
Lol so stupid mindset
What do you expect to a man that loves methaporial reviews
That’s exactly what I thought
£50,000 in 1999 is equal to £92,327.00 today, or for Americans $124,123.50.

@@rolandhazuki8787 This was filmed and released in '99 so I'm guessing this was before God Foot was introduced in the Initial D manga. This meant that Jeremy Clarkson predicted and was the inspiration for the character.

Clarkson's journalism and narration is so good that he could talk about the performance and operation of a blender and I would find it interesting.
Man's an absolute treat to watch. Motor journalism at its finest. Always brings a smile on your face.
He sort of did one of those, when he operated a Corvette V8-powered blender on Top Gear.
I enjoyed his narration about the Evo VIII 😀👍
Didn't knew the R34 Skyline had all these readouts just like the modern GTR . For a 1999 car, that is insane.
This whole video screams the 2000's, the car , the music and of course Clarkson.👌
You know the name of the first song by any chance?

1:17 there’s no way Clarkson just coincidentally referenced the Initial D God Foot
😤
Initial D stage is 4 years after this was released..
Or the author of initial D saw this Top Gear episode and referenced it in his show
@@bollemann2582 actually the manga part that has 4th stage released the same year and the godfoot battle about a year or 2 later

This documentary was called "How Japan Took Over The World And Then Lost It", and it was released in June 2000. The car that God Foot drove in Initial D was the "Vspec II Nur", which wasn't even manufactured until 2002.

This car isn’t just a computer on wheels, you could still do good old fashioned tuning on it… Nowadays you have to take your car somewhere and fork out thousands to get another couple hundred horsepower out the engine… 90’s Honda’s, Toyota’s, Nissan’s, Subaru’s and Mitsubishi’s were the pinnacle of performance motoring

peak automotive engineering, design and creativity in one car. Top tier perfection on the road.
Well that started off explosively...
Nuclear power ☢️
Gotta love how it uses RS232 communication in 1999.
USB was not really a thing and even if they used USB, it would've needed drivers which would not exist today.
RS232 wont need drivers and knowing the FOSS community, they would've made countless versions of software to read all that data.
This and Honda NSX were the few pinnacle of JDM cars of the showa era..
I saw the top gear episode were Jeremy said " thats about as good as a car gets." And I was about 12 at the time, I agreed. 😂 GTR forever

Not quite a GTR but I snagged an R34 GTT for £10k about 3 years ago! 80% of the car without the price tag

These days these cars are massively over valued
That's not true because if it were they wouldn't be selling at the prices they are.
I think that's the case with all "JDM"s really - for example, the price difference between RX7 and RX8 is ridiculous, even though latter has more features but more or less has same or better 'guts'.
@@CWorm average price for a used FD RX7 is around 27-28K USD, about the same as how much a base RX8 goes. Also the term "JDM", just don't use it, it means "Japanese Domestic Market" but the average "JDM"-kiddie probably doesn't even know.
As for the GTR R34, it's original price is at 70,000$ accounting for inflation, it's ballooned up so much because it's illegal to drive in the US and it's an icon. You could say the same about an old Ferrari; it's outdated, not as technologically advanced as a modern counterpart, but costs about 10x as much yet nobody complains, it's really all about the demand not much the actual performance of the car. Another example is the 22B Impreza which costs around 250k USD (it's a limited edition car, 400 made) yet it's soundly beaten by an Impreza Type RA 555 V-Limited from the exact same era and exact same GC chassis that costs about 10k USD (also limited, 1000 made but nobody gives a shit about it unfortunately).
Video Quality still better than the CCTV Cam in my office.
I always wanted one of these in Calsonic livery.
kinda bizarre video editing and lazy script, nuclear bomb footage was from Nevada testing range in the USA not Hiroshima or Nagasaki also Japanese companies didn't really start mass producing car until after WWII (ironically the Nissan Skylines roots go back to Nakajima Aircraft Company who built planes for the Imperial Japanese Army, as they was banned from any military production after the war by US occupiers they divested into passenger cars..)so dont know how the "Japanese car industry was on its knees" when it didn't exist.
The point still stands of Japan's fairytale economic growth that remains today as something to admire and the Skyline GT-R was a groundbreaking car but the 'dumbed' down script to this segment lets it down.
In reality, the evo shits on it on the track.
damn, not that anyone cares tho? and it depends on the track so it's 50/50
multiple clips of stock r34's destroying stock evo's on track btw, evo 7, 8 and 9 all lost to a stock r34
I'm pretty sure that's not the case with stock cars, which is what you should look at. The evo belongs on a rally stage anyway.
@@rafox66 do me a favour and watch miroshi videos and best motoring. You'll see the r34 vspec lose consistently to evos, rx7s and nsx. All stock
