What’s the advantage of playing the 5th fret instead of just the open second string? New to bass sorry if this an obvious question

You can do either, I like playing 5th fret because I feel like it's easier to mute the note afterwards, but it's really up to preference.
There's also a slight tone difference between both, but not that much
