This kind of video is the reason I subscribed to his channel dude! You’re not alone. However I get the same feeling that maybe he gets more views on gear related videos.
Michael Landau is one of my favourite players. He uses some fabulous chords, harmonic language, and lead playing. So original. You’ve started to scratch the surface of an incredibly deep lake 😉
Landau's album 'Tales From The Bulge' is one of my top 20 favourite albums of all time. Tone, composition, touch, and a little magic make it a must listen.
Standard voicing hierarchy ...3rd & 7th chord tones define the tonality. The 5th adds little harmonic "value", so common to substitute an "upper extension" (9, 11, 13) in its place.
Thank you! These are indeed some great chords. I only discovered Michael Landau when Suhr had come out with ML signature single-coil pickups. After some research I learned he had played on tons of albums along side LA session players Steve Lukather and Dann Huff.
There are very similar chord voicings on the Sting song When we Dance, particuarly the Eadd9 Though Sting does like his add9's More vids like this please John
An amazing, almost Andy Summers type chordal riff of this type, is the guitar figure in "Under the Boardwalk", in the version recorded by ( of all people,) Bruce Willis. I think it's something like the Temptations or similar that are the band, and whoever is on guitar does an amazing articulated chordal riff through the verse.
Its all about beautifull chords and music about this supernan that playes each note with all his heart and soul! Iff you do not like his music, you have to take one song to leave a lot off music behind! 👏💥👏
Hi John, great video! Would love to see you make a video on Jon Damian’s 3 note palette chart. His chart changed the course of my musical journey! So amazing!!!
Another great example of Michael Landau's beautiful chordal work is the song "I'm Buzzed" from his 1990 album "Tales From The Bulge". It would be great if you could break it down for us mere mortals, wouldn't it? Btw. your Steve Lukather ECST preset is fantastic... 👏
Gorgeous lines in that improv! I agree with others-more of this, please. For more inspiring chords in this vein (also in E and using open strings), check out this excerpt from an old instructional video by Phil Keaggy: ruclips.net/video/NIWMrK67_bk/видео.html. -Tom
Can you tell me what genre your solos are in? I generally play the same style but I’m not really sure of the genre. It’s not really Neo soul or R&B Thanks 😊
I strongly suspect I am in a tiny minority, but ... I would love to see more content like this from you John versus gear reviews.
Not a tiny minority at all

Love the chord videos! Please share more of these beauties.
Yes! More interesting chord options and voicings , things like that. Less tube amp/ modeling drama 😂
Loved learning that! Thanks for chord knowledge - more please!

Thanks! I have most of his recordings but that album flew under my radar!
Landau is the GOAT. One of my favorite players!
What is a GOAT please ?
@ GOAT is an informal acronym for “Greatest Of All Time”. It’s just a way of saying something or someone is highly regarded or favored.
