I think all of us as artists struggle during the process of painting. I've seen artists whom I think are drastically better than me, rework their paintings where it almost doesn't look the same. One of the things that I can't seem to break the habit of, is being loose at the beginning, and geek free to deviate from the guidelines I set out for myself. So embrace your painting process, because I think it will only improve with time. Your results look awesome!
I absolutely love this. I love that you're new to oil painting and don't have that academic approach that most artists have. Learning from your mistakes and putting it out there. Makes us noobs feel like we can do it as well!
I love hearing your thought process behind your pieces, it’s super interesting!! I really like how you are so open to always improve further, I think as an artist or as a person with any sort of creative interest, it’s always important to want to get better at what you do and to not settle when you think you’ve done your best piece. I can also relate greatly to when you talked about the way that you paint, how it’s not a straight line to get to the end results, but a lot of messing around with the painting until you get it to be where you want it to be. I’ve never really heard anyone talk about that in a way that I could relate so much. My paintings are 99% of the time A STRUGGLE. Things look wrong most of the time painting, until the very last few details.
You paint portraits how I do atm. I’m impressed with your commentary...”delicious “ is a favourite. I really like how you show your mistakes, boy we can all relate. Keep it up.
I paint in acrylic so everything dries fast. It's more like a sculpture to me. Layers and layers of chipping away the "ew why'd I do that?“ Love when my friends come over and are like OMG you can paint?! And I'm like nah not really lmao
@@stevenknight6393 I use a retarder from time to time but you lose some opacity. I'm in S. Ontario so I'm surprised anything dries here either with humidy at a steady 80% If I painted in oil I'd be screwed haha

your not scared of messing up through out the process, a lot of painters like myself start to panic. and you just have so much confidence in not being okay with the painting untill its okay😍. I love it.
Great paintings! I appreciate that you tell us about your having to redo certain areas (like the eyes). It helps us who are learning and having those same issues not feel so down on ourselves when we have the same issues. Thanks!
what I like about your first portrait is that you did almost a yellow grisaille under the actual skin tones. Really interesting technique that resulted in great paintings :D
You have the eye to know what’s not correct then keep going through the mistakes and find a face in the end. Even though it takes longer it’s still a popular way of painting . Takes me 10 times to find something I like . You get that nice peachy female skin that I like in the first one .. Great vid hope the leg is healing well .✌️✌🏾✌🏻❤️🇦🇺❤️
Yo Slew; I like the way to make the changes on the painting without laboring over them. They both came out very nice - I especially like the girl, nice job, Bud!
I have to tell you that I really like your videos. I've been your follower for a long time but I haven't commented yet. Very inspiring and because of you I found the courage to start a channel and show what I do in the arts. God bless you
YES NEW CONTENT!! I’ve honestly missed these so much! I like to paint and do my own art while listening to these videos. Glad to have you back fam 👏🏾👏🏾
love ur lust for art and the way u talk about it ! shows so much passion and drive and is very motivating! beautiful style youve curated aswell, has a great execution which feels very effortless! big love! hope healing is going well
Nice. The trick that helped me more than anything was to avoid using white until near the very end. It tends to wash out other colors and create a need for constant over painting. If I get the values and proportions going from mid tone to dark instead and use the white of the canvas I can usually get a portrait ninety five percent done and then add the white tints at the very end. The total saturation is also a lot better.
Hey, would love to see you do more oil paint if you feel like it! It feels good to see you go from one portrait to another and watch you become better everytime! Love from france
I love the way you filmed this! I think it would be an awesome vid idea to show how you typically do your video/ painting timelaspe process for artists!
I'm using the same pallette for a portrait i'm doing for my painting class. I have spend like 25 hours and it still looks like the first layer!!! Maybe it's because I'm trying to copy every detail. Love your art!!!

Where do you find references for portraits? I’m looking for “classical” poses, nice lighting... 3/4 view, profile. I feel like most of what I find is selfie type stuff.
I’ve always wanted to just hang out with the Oracle. Just chill and eat cookies. I would just chill with her and eat Golden Graham’s, but.......there is no spoon.
In Sydney each year we have the “Archibald portrait prize”. I went yesterday to the exhibition and I think if you look up online you’ll find some amazing inspiration from today’s Australian portrait artists.
Amazing job. I knew it was Laurence 🤗 been back to my art for the last couple of years after about 20 years away. Not touched a portrait yet though. Just still life and mixed media.
So glad to know I'm not the only person who has to completely repaint an eye, nose or mouth and move it 1/4" or more to one side! I get so frustrated! But good to know it's part of the process. :)
Greg Haskins that was wild for me to see that process too... I use watercolor, so 'moving' features around in a portrait seems super difficult for me...
I'd like to know what everyone else thinks my art tutor says it better to use a mixture of brown and blue instead of using black paint? maybe try it out I'm not too sure if there's a much greater effect but it I would like to hear another opinion.
I've seen other people say that too. I guess it's better because you can alter how cold or warm you want your black to be easily by adding either more brown or blue. Also I find it doesn't make quite as deep a black as regular black does which I like more. I guess it gives you more practice mixing multiple colours and using a palette knife as well. Not too sure tho : )
@@finnk8530 yes i agree with that! black is a very dominate color so its sometimes hard to work with. But yeah the ability to change temperature is important with a burnt umber and ultramarine blue and its really fun! Here i was using the Zorn pallete so I had black to work with.
@@slewp I've never tried the Zorn palette before, I guess I'm too scared to limit myself to so few colours. Might force myself to give it a go. Also another question: in the video you mentioned you take the long route to get to a result you're happy with. I find I struggle with this but in a much bigger way, where no matter what I do I can't seem to work quickly. For example one of the portraits you did would have taken me about 4 days to do. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not motivated enough or I'm too obsessed with being precise but I can't seem to speed up my process. Any suggestions?. Also thanks for the great videos, they make my week : )
That Lawrence Fishbourn is excellent
both are dope, but i like most, how the girl looks like a piece of clay for several minutes until the face gets more detailed... hahaha.
