That’s how I mix my colors every time. I’m color blind so rather than trying to make super natural looking skin tones, I just go crazy with the color. Does it look stupid? Probably. Can I tell? Nope, so I might as well have some fun with it lol.
I love how you talk about tones and techniques like you did with the chin and forehead on the Sergeant. Would love to see more of this sort of thing. I know you always talk about values, light and shadow a lot so thank you for that. I’ve only done a few portraits so lots to learn from you.
This was just so GOOD! and here's why the way you painted them , gave the portraits a cool / heartwarming feeling . Cuz you were painting loosely ..free.. relaxed ..and it made a cozy atmosphere . Sometimes it's not about our brushes ..or paints .. or our moves . It's about the feeling that it's going through and I loved it ! ( Btw take care man we don't one our slew gets cold )
An interesting group, especially Henry James @15:33. James was among the most busy authors in high society. He introduced some famous art people to each other as well, e.g. James Whistler (The Butterfly) was introduced to Comte Robert de Montesquiou-Fézensac (The Bat) via James. James' writing also became quite modern at the end of his life.
I just found this guys RUclips channel and it’s honestly the best thing I’ve found this whole pandemic. Love what he is doing with his art work and how he challenges his skill and is constantly improving his art work. Fascinating and mesmerizing stuff here!
Slew!!!!! I just screenshot the picture of that light skinned girl, so crazy here you are painting her, this will help me so much because I was struggling with the nose. I think I googled face references or faces in shadow lol
Mr Slew!! Thanks for another awesome video, inspires me to jump into portrait work!! Appreciate the way you talk through your use of colour, ive got no real idea about colour theory, I just go with what works to my eye but you definitely make me think more critically about it and I love that you share your colour process. Cheers!🪅
Amazing I think I ll be hanging out with you in all your videos from now on . I found you last night thumbing thru stencils art work glad I did . It’s brings me great pleasure to watch and learn your art will be doing it this weekend. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world . ✌️🍄✨
I just checked out the website and didnt see any portrait. I would like to see more of these. They are really well done and show that you are really talented. I am no expert but I like the depth that is created in these portraits with the coloring.
I’m glad to hear you talk about your process. I’ve learned a lot from you for sure! I also grab google references and feel guilty but I guess I shouldn’t...
Love seeing these, it pushes me to up my game, mine is usually about social commentary, my experience, and I forget the theory at times. Been a while since I’ve really given time to painting from life. I try to create a self portrait every so often. You mentioned critique, while I can’t offer any in terms of technique, the paintings were awesome! I would say the placement of the 5th felt a bit squished and the 4 looked better rather than fitting in the 5th. Other than that, I’m amazed how they go from the sketchy outline figuring out proportions, to a fully 3D well lit painting. Especially within an hour but more we do the faster we become . Picasso said it took him 15 minutes plus 30 years . I usually stay at the beginning stage afraid to take it further, it’s all learning. Was fun watching the timelapses ☺️
@SLEW i still think you get a little too saturated and "chalky" with your skin tones no matter what color you choose. From what I can tell even though you are using "values" and correctly I might say, I don't see you using "tones" per se. I'm noticing more of a value change in your work with "tints" and "shades" not necessarily tones. I think if you had more of a tonal range you will see a major difference and eliminate the "chalkiness" you run into. Essentially, you would need to incorporate more grey tones in your work. You gotta get "grayer" in your process combined with any color of your choosing. May I suggest an exercise where you use no white at ALL! Pre mix some grey values leaving out both white and your darkest color whether it be black or dark umber on your value scale. That should put you in maybe a 7 to 8 value range. Mix any color you want with these values and see how that works for you.
Nice constructive comment. May I ask you to clarify what the difference between tints, shades and tones is? Do you mean he nails the values but not the saturation? I always thought tone and value is the same (maybe because the word combination tonal value exists haha)
@@majamuster2470 sure no problem! The difference is that when you tint a color you add white, when you make a shade of that color you add black and when you want to tone it you add grey. You see when you are doing representational art you need the appropriate tonal values and not just use a highly saturated color and start tinting with white or shading with black and only utilizing that as one's "value" scale. It can be very confusing I know I've made the same mistake. So, when you have time try an exercise where you take a color let's say red and gradually add white until you only have white at the end of that scale. Next going in opposite direction start adding black, more and more as you get to the end and only have black. Next, make a separate value scale by taking your white and black and making a neutral grey. It should be noted that this grey is your middle value and will be in the middle of this new "tonal value" scale. Thus, it will be a tonal value of 5 on a 10 block value scale. Now, you start adding more white in increments until you have just white at one end like you did before. Then, do it again with the black in opposite direction. Now, you have a "tonal" value scale of greys where is though the other one is just a regular value scale. Finally, you will have two "value scales" but one is now tonal. Now, you can start adding the red to those "tonal" values mixed with gray and get more range of "tonal values" than you previously had with just regular value scale composed of tints and shades of the color red. You will see a big difference and once you start applying these tonal values to your work you will better control your shifts in planes of the human form or whatever object you are rendering. Hope that helps bc it's hard to explain in text and much easier to show in person.
@@majamuster2470 I think he needs to desaturate his skin tones a little more. Or any color he is using. Honestly, he actually may be de saturating them all ready but he keeps adding white which is giving him that "chalky" look. Which is why I suggested he use no white at all and just grey tones of the color of his choosing. I think he should challenge himself to NOT USE white and consider it public enemy number one. His values are fine but it doesn't feel like there is much "tonality". Remember tones=equal grey or greyed version of a color

Love the challenge: what a great idea! You said that you didn't like the colours in your first portrait? You should try it again on its own and show us your interpretation of a Kree warrior, maybe with Mar-Vell or something. With explosions, etc... now that cd be a really fun play with colour!
Critique or something you might try: I think it is very courageous of you that you start of with such a loose sketch, but it does look like it makes the rest of the process, a lot more tedious and time consuming. So maybe you can try to spend just a little more time on the sketching out and be a bit more precise. This will safe you from moving around so many eyes and noses later on. I hope this might help! I love your videos :)
Marina Nery is the model for your fourth painting and you painted her so beautifully! You should totally paint her again sometime, she has so many cool pictures
you kept talking about the color pallets you were using, is there a list of pallet colors you are using or are you just naming the different brands you use?
I plan on getting to a level where I can paint a portrait like these in an hour. At this point it wouldn't be anywhere near that short! I've only recently gotten into portraits
