- Intake air temperature sensor P0110 testing and replacement. We go over how you can test the sensor without any fancy or expensive scan tools. NOTE: Be smart around open flames. (No jewelry, baggy clothes, etc.) You can also use a hair dryer to test the sensor. This was performed on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.
The intake air temperature sensor detects intake air temperature and transmits a signal to the ECM. The temperature sensing unit uses a thermistor, which is sensitive to the change in temperature. Electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases in response to the temperature rise.

P0110 - An excessively high or low voltage from the sensor is entered in to the ECM. Or, rationally incorrect voltage from the sensor is entered to the ECM, compared to the voltage signal from engine coolant temperature sensor.

Thanks! I didn't know what this device was, but the two wires broke off right at the harness. Not enough to solder to!. After seeing this video, I removed the sensor and tested it. It was good (1.9k)
I checked the two frayed wires that broke off the harness. Good (5v and Gnd continuity). Rather than buy a new sensor and harness I scraped and cut away enough of the harness to solder two wires. I mechanically strengthened them to the harness. I checked the resistance of the two new wires after plugging in the sensor. 1.9k Perfect. I put the sensor back on the intake, soldered the two new wires to the frayed ones and voila! no error code, and probably smoother running in the winter. 1997 Infiniti Q45 w330k miles now runs perfectly again. Zero cost. 15 minutes labor.

+CarsNToys Probably the reason was that i had to take the distributor out to change the body "o" ring and i had to remove the air filter assy so i had to disconect the plug to the sensor.Thank you for the fast response and great video!

This video has been very helpful. On my 2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso I've got a P0105 (MAP sensor) and a P0110 (air intake temp sensor) code. I got no resistance on terminal 2 of the connector with the ignition switched on. I had the same on terminal 2 of the MAP sensor connector and these are connected to the same pin on the ECU so I think there must be a break in the wire or a bad connection.
What if I'm getting - 38.2 degrees on my scan Guage. I get 5v from the harness but the continuity test doesn't emit a sound but displays 1060?
We really need to know what else you use that saucepan for - obviously not for sauce, so please explain more about your RC tyres .. and what temperature exactly must the water be for that?
Does the same part number hold good for a mitsubishi lancer SLXI too ?

Many thanks for your video. By any chance, do you have another one showing on how to repair the wiring of the IAT when we do not get continuity/ after all, changing sensor is the easiest part and the one that mechanics love to do. I would like to learn about the other end of that connector of the IAT sensor. Does it end in the fuses boxes? The electrical repairs are the most expensive.
Great video. Thanks for your help. I swapped the sensor out as per the video. I do not have a multimeter so I just opted to buy a new sensor. Now I wish I would have had one because on a 98 i30 I am getting P0110 sensor wiring code. And P0302 cylinder 2 misfire code. I had a code on cylinder 4 and swapped it to the 2 position and the code followed.
Car is rough, low power, misfiring and stalling out at lights. I swapped spark plugs and fuel filter too.
Could I have a bad wiring harness for the air intake sensor and a bad coil pack?
I have a code showed up on my uzuki sidekick, it's P1451 baro circuit performance problem. What could it be the problem?

I have a 99 Maxima that had been giving me a little bit of trouble starting for about the past month- sometimes I would turn the key, it would crank, but wouldn't fire, I'd release the key and try again and it would fire up. Finally a few days ago it wouldn't start at all- just crank crank crank. After swapping out the fuel pump, fuel filter, and battery, I was finally about to call the tow truck when I noticed a wire dangling loose. It was the wire harness to this air temperature sensor- the whole sensor had in fact broken out of the air intake duct (someone who owned the car before me had apparently lost the rubber grommet that holds it in, and tried to epoxy it back into the duct.) I got a 70 cent grommet, plugged the sensor back into the intake duct, and the car fired right up. So if you have a crank-no start issue that's driving you nuts, you might check this!
The same thing happens with me..even when I boost my car some time crank some time silence I discover the harness is exposed and one of the wire cut and both of the wires fried of heat. So I am going to change sensor and harness. Thanks so much to share with us your experience.

Can I use a Power Probe to perform this test?
Can you put a thermometer in the water to get an accurate temperature reading so you know the center is putting out the right ohms for the temperature
a section of the harness came loose from someplace. it had a grey connector on it but after taking the car home (after an accident) the connector had dragged on the road and lost its connector. enclosed pictures. can you tell me what i need to do to repair this. does it have to do with ambient temperature sensor? how do i send pictures?

Can i test a ambient temperature senso the same way IF I CAN i already did it and im getting power even with the ignition key of is the normal and when i check the continuity i was having on both pins
.. by the way, the hose clamp used at 7:50 - is one with brown handle grips beter than one with blue. I've seen one at my tool store with blue grips - does this make a difference to the multi-meter readings? Please explain. Also, when you grip the sensor plastic housing - what torque are you using? Have you calibrated your grips? Do you have a calibration tool? This video clearly needs more explanation to be understood clearly. Is there an accompanying manual for download? (Is it available in different languages?)

Tested the IAT sensor and its good, but terminal one on the harness is only reading 0.02 volts. Could this be a bad harness or the wiring itself?

What if the obd2 says air temp sensor circuit failure
I used a heat gun to test my cabin air sensor and it worked fast and have me the info I needed. just don't burn yourself.

i think it is not the voltage you are measuring. based on the video ( meter range) , you are checking the resistance of the sensor. But anyway, thanks for this simple demo and clear explanation.

Do I have to disconnect the negative terminal on my battery before doing any testing?
Maria, at least for this video test he did mention to turn the ignition key to ON, so that indicates to me that we need the battery cables connected for the testing to be done. How is your learning doing? I am in the same boat. I also have a P0500 code to fix and I have been driving w/o speedometer for 2 yrs. Regards from FL.

One question: Now my car show CODE P1320 (Manufacturer specific) and the SES Light is On. I replace the ignition coils and spark plugs too. Any idea? Tks guys!!!!!!!!

This sensor it's designed to measure the air weight because boulder the air the heavier and the hotter the lighter so the computer can calculate fuel trims.
But don't get me wrong I'm just trying to help here. Greedings. :)

Yes. If the engine light turns on the dash they won't pass the vehicle. (At least in most states.)
@@CarsNToys Air temp is used for computations for the car, but, would you know how it actually would cause emission leaks? Also, having recently had a mass airflow DTC and resolved with merely cleaning that sensor, may the P0110 also come from merely needing that sensor cleaned? Thanks for any thought you may have.
You could just use a hair dryer. Its safer and faster.

When theres no reading on the harness theres a problem with the circuit? What would be the solution for that? Cause Im not getting any reading on the harness connector at all
First, check the wiring; make sure there are no breaks. (Typically, near the harness connector.) If that looks okay, check the fuses.
My bmw e46 2003 model 320i has a problem of air flow meter if It's conected the car is masing. I bought the New one but it's doing the same thing help pls
Obtain a copy of the BMW service manual. The manual will show you the locations of all sensor and its wiring.
hi my car sometimes wont go over 1000 rpm and i have to swtich the ignition on and off to get it working. i was told by a mechanic its the air intake sensor and that its faulty. just wondering what your thoughts are on this and if this is the case . im actually in the middle east and cant really trust the mechanics here so i wanted a second opnion. this is my first car so dont really know what im doing. any help would be much appreciated
mohammed jawaad I think the mechanic may be referring to the mass air flow sensor. Best way to verify is getting a code reader and see if any codes come up. I do have a video on the mass air flow sensor as well. Just search my channel. Good luck

It's not voltage that is dropping, it is the resistance dropping. For example at 9:17 or so. Using incorrect terminology (saying voltage instead of resistance) just confuses all that don't know better, and are attempting to learn.

What if you put into hot water and the voltmeter is going up not down. Is it a bad sensor?
Use a hair dryer instead. Don't use water.

I got a hesitation only on hot sunny day I'm starting to believe my intake temperature sensor is giving a false reading... it's 88deg outside and my temp sensor is reading 129deg I don't know if that's normal

When resistant drops that means more voltage coming to car computer. In other word the sensor tell the computer that the air is warm or cold or hot. Is it true?
You could just squeeze the sensor in your hand to warm it. Heating a gallon of water is so overkill man! 😁

I'm not sure. Try searching via google images. If no luck, purchase a repair manual for your vehicle.

@9.. it's not the voltage that is dropping - fool! The sensor doesn't generate voltage - it's a resistor - the impedance changes.
Matbe a hair dryer would work as well. Less chance of screwing up a good sensor, huh?
