It was such a big surprise finding out as an adult how this movie wasn't well received. Even Spielberg felt let down by the movie. Personally I've always held this movie in high regard.
Great reaction as always:)
Home video really helped spread a lot of movies that didn't do great in theaters.
It still boggles me up to this day that this movie had such a low rating. But I'm guessing that, when this movie was released, people weren't ready of this kind of "retelling" and this was probably ahead of its time. All I can say is, the mash between childlike elements/lore and its adult theme gave this movie greater depth. So much so that the contrast between its childlike elements and the adult theme really reached into my inner child even more.
@@gundummies - Yeah, it IS very childish in parts... but it's always been a guilty pleasure of mine. There was a cringe factor in the skateboarding parts, and a few other scenes where it seems like Spielberg was pandering to whatever trends were happening at the time. I could have done without that stuff, but other than that, it holds up even today.
It was very well received at my house. Love this movie.
Cable and VHS made a lot of movies that weren’t well received in the theaters, but got a second life with repeated viewings by families.
This is one movie that can choke me up... when the little boy says " oh there you are peter" just gets me for some reason like we are still that little kid somewhere deep inside...
The other movie is "Rudy" which if you haven't seen it I strongly suggest a reaction video! Stay blessed 🙌
There's a moment just after that, when the other Lost Boys run to Peter, where Rufio takes a step forward as if he really wanted to join them. It always broke my heart.
The John Williams effect
That scene always tears me up and goosebumps.
Dustin Hoffman as Hook is such strange casting but he pulls it off hilariously! When he starts yelling at Smee to stop him shooting himself always makes me laugh 😂
As I grew up with this movie I can't imagine anyone else playing Hook lol. I don't really watch much with him in it so I guess I didn't have any preconceived ideas about him as an actor and what roles he usually plays.
This is his magnum opus.
"Don't try to stop me Smee! Stop me Smee. Smee... why aren't you stopping me?!" 🤣🤣🤣
Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins have great comedic timing together as Hook and Smee.
And of course, Robin Williams is always fantastic. His pure joy at discovering who he is lights up my face every time 😄
Charlie Korsmo (Jack) was in a few more movies as a kid/teen, like Dick Tracy (1990), What About Bob? (1991), and Can't Hardly Wait (1998), before retiring from acting to become a lawyer.
Dick Tracy is a riot. Very worth watching.
You're not only recognizing actors faces from other movies but now their voices too! Good call! Yes, Dustin Hoffman was the voice of Shifu in King Fu P.anda
Hey James, there's a documentary that reunited the actors who played the lost boys in "Hook" and they were all sharing their memories of working on this movie with Robin Williams and it concluded with their reacting to a voiceover clip of Robin's voice and seeing their reactions as this was after Robin had died
what's the name of the documentary
@@mattcarroll8702 I don't recall right off hand, but it is on youtube
I was wondering if there was a link to it
I see that you already have "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" on your watch list. When you get there, you'll recognize Bob Hoskins there as well.
The actress who plays Wendy is Maggie Smith
And you're correct about Dustin Hoffman being Master Shifu in,"Kung Fu Panda"
James, I’m sure the Oscar winning actor, Dustin Hoffman, would be honored to know you recognized him for his voice work in Kung Fu Panda! 🤣🤣🤣 I give you credit tho, you’re definitely learning more and more. Keep the reactions coming, live the channel.
Thanks appreciate it
@@AwesomeUSMoviesMaster Shifu is a Red Panda by the way.
Another childhood favorite! They did such a good job with costume design it's hard to see Dustin Hoffman within the character of Captain Hook. Just wait until you find out Glenn Close is in the movie too!
The sets in this movie are literally out of this world.
Maggie Smith as an elderly Wendy is magical! Her interactions with Peter (Robin Williams) are my favorite in a movie filled with lots of wonderful moments. Her line, "Hello, Boy!", gives me the tingles every time!
"Hello, Wendy lady."
Hook is such a ridiculously underrated movie! So glad you're watching it!
Really never thought it was underrated , Was always a great film
I was The Perfect Age when this movie came out. Old enough to laugh at the humor, young enough to be enthralled by the fairy tale. I think I wore out our VHS copy of this movie.
I'm turning 50 this October and this movie reminds me to always feed my imagination, look at life with childhood enthusiasm, and, cherish the attention and playtime with my children. I am growing up, not growing old. I will never be a pirate.
Hook was one of my go to movies as a kid along with Neverending Story, Ghostbusters, and Gremlins.
CLASSICS!!!!
I didn't watch it a lot when I was a kid, but I remember enjoying it.
Hook is a movie that makes me miss the days when all the effects weren’t just CGI. Looking forward to your Willy Wonka reaction!
That's Glenn Close being put in the "boo box"! That part always scared the heck outta me when I was little.
Is it?!
Yes it was her
Wow! I’ve seen this movie soooo many times! Never knew 🤯
Oh Robin, we all miss you so much. God is so lucky to have you there entertaining him every day
"You're doing it" the food scene was always my absolute favorite...oh to be a fly on the wall during the filming of this movie... Robin Williams is and will always be amazing 🤩
Watched it with my nephew when he was 7. We both thought the small boy who 1st saw him "there you are peter" should have been next in line.
Oh this is such a childhood classic. Rip Robin Williams
Robin Williams is one of my all time favorite actors. He was HILARIOUS! He was also a very good serious actor. If you haven't seen them yet, you should check out One Hour Photo, and also Insomnia. Those really show his range as an actor. Very serious and dramatic rolls for him.
Out of every telling of peter pan, this is my favorite. I think mainly because it isn't just peter pan, it's a believable continuation to the peter pan story. the boy who never wanted to grow up fell in love, and forgot who he was having to remember his past to save his childen.
I love the message of this movie, to cherish the time you spend with your children. At least that’s what I get watching this as an adult. I have 2 little girls at home and my work takes me away from them for weeks as a time. But I adore my little girls. And every time I come home they rush me screaming “DADDY!”
The life of a trucker is not an easy one
One of my favorite childhood soundtracks! Loved this movie growing up and I loved Robin Williams. Whenever I see his earlier movies, I tear up and think of how much was lost when he departed this world :(
This was the third Spielberg movie I saw on VHS.
This was going to be a musical with Michael Jackson in the role of Peter Pan, while David Bowie, Tim Curry and Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones were considered for Captain Hook. It was going to have a Christmas Day 1985 release, but Speilberg was too busy working on Oscar nominated epics like The Color Purple and Empire Of The Sun.
Julia Roberts, whom played Tinkerbell, did not like working with Spielberg, as she quoted him for being "a man child and was a very selfish person."
And Spielberg vowed never to work with her again.
The film received negative Reviews by Critics, but was a box office success, making $300 million dollars against a $75 million dollar budget.
I remember watching this in the theater. It was so much fun and was one of those VHS tapes that my brother and I wore out. I can't believe you instantly recognized Dustin Hoffman's voice as Master Shifu!
One of my childhood favorites ❤️ when I get old I want to be like Granny Wendy here, saying things like “hello boy” and “dear night lights, protect my sleeping babes” it’s so endearing, I love her!
This movie was a huge part of my childhood. I have a huge nostalgic attachment to it. The music alone gets me emotional. Makes me cry. I just love it.
Brings me back to my childhood!! Love these types of 80s and 90s kids movies
It helps a lot if you know the Peter Pan lore/story to catch all the little bits and pieces. When the little girl is singing that always chokes me up!
This movie brings back so many memories of my son when he was little, I think we've watched it everyday , gosh they grow up so fast.
Robin Williams is my favorite. His movies are wonderful. I love Hook....makes me feel like a kid again.
Man, how I miss Robin Williams. I didn't realize what a treasure he was until he was gone.
The boy playing Peter's son is in What About Bob? with Bill Murray. It is so funny if you haven't seen it already.
This may not be the best movie for Williams or Spielberg, but it has a lot of charm. It's very much a typical 90s kids' movie for all the good and bad that brings, but it has a lot of heart, great performances by the whole cast, and feels a lot like a very large stage-play, which seems appropriate.
Have to fly, have to fight ,have to Crow, have to save Maggie have to save Jack Hook is back. One of my favorite lines in the movie there are so many but this is one of my favorites
It's scrumptious knowing that you have yet to really witness Dustin Hoffman's acting enough for him to gain recognition in your mind, it means we get to see you enjoy his career with movies like Sphere (1998), Rain Man (1988), Tootsie (1982), Straw Dogs (1971) and Midnight Cowboy (1967) all of which are probably on your list to watch.
Yes, James, you are correct. Dustin Hoffman was Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda. Shifu is actually a Red Panda, which makes his insulting of pandas even more ironic. Also, yes, that was McGonagall, who was played by Maggie Smith. She was only about 56-57 in this film, and was wearing a lot of old-aging makeup and a light grey wig.
As great as the two leads are, Bob Hoskins as Smee was always my favorite.
Fun Fact: for the slingshot scene, they shad to shave Robin Williams chest and back to add the paint markings. He was a truly hairy man
25:46
"Your adventures are over,"
"No, to Live... To Live will be an awfully big adventure."
Thanks for the memories.
I'm sorry, I'ma go cry again.
I love this movie! The scenes in the plane when he was scared to fly & there’s the pic of the plane ✈️ crashing always makes me crack up! ✌🏻☀️
I didn't even realize Pan Am didn't exist anymore. They were the biggest USA airline and the 1st international airline and were very innovative. 1st commercial airline to use jets, jumbo jets, computerized reservations,...
A movie of my childhood, and an absolute classic.
This is one of my favorite movies ever have such a great memory watching this with my father. The scene with the little kid seeing he is Peter gets me every time.
This has always been a feel good movie for me. The first version of Peter Pan I was ever introduced to
Dante Basco, who played Rufio, is most famous for voicing Zuko, the villain from the anime "Avatar: The Last Airbender". There is some internet debate whether it should be considered an anime or a cartoon. I consider it an anime personally, even if it wasn't made in Japan. The style is similar enough.
This movie was a childhood classic for me. The best version of Peter pan, as it made the characters seem way more real, as well as a continuation of the original movies.
One of my favourite movies 🤝🏻 when peter shouts bangarang at the end for the lost boys to join in gives me goosebumps 🎉🎉🎉🎉 rip robin 😢
"Is That McGonagall??"
It certainly is, James
No actors have ever given me the emotions that everyone needs to feel like Robyn.
I love Hook so much! Total comfort movie for me ❤
I loved this movie as a child. I knew from a younger age that this movie was not well received by critics or audiences, but I never understood why. I think the performances are great from Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman and the character of Rufio was always my favorite. It really saddens every time I watch this film and see his death scene happen every time.
Oh man this was the first movie i ever watched in the movie theater i was 5 years old and i still remember, it will always have a special place in my heart, i'm glad you watched it.
Peter, has been in Neverland for so long that a happy thought and a small amount of pixie dust will make him fly. Everyone else can fly too but requires more pixie dust for shorter times
When the adult every day life gets me down, this is one of the movies that makes me smile and reminds me of my inner child. It can be hard to keep that sense of wonder as you get older, so finding the things that helps you keep it - is really something special.
Hope you enjoyed my reaction
You're correct on the sensei in "Kung Fu Panda"; he's a red panda (Giant pandas like Po are related to bears, but red pandas are not closely related to any other animal species & definitely not giant pandas) and voiced by Dustin Hoffman. Dustin is best known for "Tootsie" and "Rain Man".
'McGonigall'/'Wendy-Lady' is Dame Maggie Smith. Actually, during the final Harry Potter film, she was secretly getting cancer treatments. She didn't tell the kids in the cast so they would worry or be distracted from their film roles.
One of my favorite Robin Williams’s films. And Dustin Hoffman’s Capt. Hook !!!!!
So glad you watched this movie!
The crocodile took Hook’s hand so he killed it and turned it into a clock.
Another one from my childhood. You're watching so many movies linked deeply to my happy days memories.
This one is an absolute gem of a movie. Can’t wait for the kiddos to get old enough to watch and appreciate this one.
Bangarang
This was an interesting concept, seeing Peter Pan as a grown up and With a family. I remember seeing this in the theater with my grandfather when it came out. my seven year old son now loves it. Another great video from you James! Nice to see you're beginning to recognize actors from other things. Keep up the great videos James
Did you forget about the crocodile who was always chasing Captain Hook? He had swallowed a clock and Hook knew he was coming cuz he could hear the ticking. That's why he didn't like ticking clocks.
I love your movie choices. I am re-living my youth through your reactions
Young Wendy Darling in this is played by a young Gwyneth Paltrow... daughter of famous actress Blythe Danner and director/producer Bruce Paltrow... later on she would go on to be probably more famous than either of her parents.
James: yes, it is McGonagall from Harry Potter. The actress is (Dame) Maggie Smith, who has done a wide variety of work.
Some other "Easter eggs" that are in this film:
1. Dustin Hoffman (Hook) also does the voice of the British pilot on the plane.
2. There are a few notable cameos in this film. First, it's singer Phil Collins as the skeptical policeman when the kids get taken away by Hook.
3. Fellow musicians David Crosby and Jimmy Buffett, as well as former boxer Tony Burton (he was Apollo Creed's trainer in Rocky), are some of Hook's pirates.
4. Next, it's George Lucas and Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame as the couple who are kissing when Tinkerbell drops the fairy dust on them as she and Peter fly to Neverland.
5. It's actress Glenn Close who is the pirate that gets thrown in the "boo box." She is tied for an unfortunate Oscar record - nominated eight times without ever winning.
6. Dustin Hoffman's son Jake is the the Little League teammate hoping that Jack drives him in.
Tugging the nostalgia strings something fierce with this one. Robin Williams was such a great actor.
Watching this on my TV.
Made this old man's birthday better!
Thanks so much
This is one of my favorite movies from childhood. It reminds me of my father in a lot of painful ways. He never grew up, you see, and it's not so fun having a child for a parent.
Oh man one of my top favorite movies. Captured my imagination as a kid.
I watched this movie so many times. Absolutely love. R.I.P. Robin ❤️.
I loved this movie as a kid. Robin Williams was a great part of my childhood.
Honestly one of my all time favorite movies. Reminds you not to lose your inner child.
I can't believe you reacted to this. One of my favorite movies ever... No one does this one. Great reaction. Thank you.
This movie plays into a lot of the themes of the original Peter pan, if you stay young at heart you'll never grow old, if you hold on to a happy thought you can fly, imagination is one of strongest things a person can have, etc.
Oh there you are Peter. 🥺 Rest in peace the man the legend the original OG Robin Williams.
One of my favorite childhood movies. Brings back memories
One of my favorites as a kid! Bob Hoskins also has a great supporting role in Mermaids!
😁😉
I TEND TO COMMENT ANYWAYS. 🤨 🤣👌 'Hook' is a fun movie. Williams being gone now makes everything he's ever been in turn bittersweet. Although I grew out of the movie not long after seeing it- Williams's character is an early 90s yuppie that begins to remember what it was like to be the hero- after YEARS of leaving Neverland. He easily grew tired of office life and his boss's relentless calls. It's ALWAYS nice watching your reactions to movies. I tend to really enjoy REWATCHING what RUclips Reactors react to favorite movies I like. Off the top of my head are FIVE favorites, including sequels: 1.'Full Metal Jacket' 2. 'Robocop' (all three AND the remake is still really good, too) 3. 'Gung Ho!' (the 1986 car factory comedy directed by Ron Howard,) 4. 'The Boost' 5. Star Wars (Eps. I-VI and SOLO).
Great movie and almost forgotten by people nowadays unfortunately. I remember watching it with family back then - more than once - and it was always fun and magical to watch. Even today it still is. :))
I watched this when my kids were young & fell in love with it.
They picked the perfect actor for this movie. Robin Williams does awesome acting like a kid.
I was happy to hear you recognise McGonagall, she has such a distinct voice. I knew you would enjoy the movie. Ruffio''s death is still hard.
I remember watching this in the movie theater as a child!! My mind was blow 🤯
There are three big name cameos that where well hidden. David Crosby, Jimmy Bufffet and Glen Close are members of hooks crew.
Wow. Not knowing about Dustin Hoffman (Captain Hook) is astonishing to me... he is a legend. So, it's time to start your DH journey! Begin with The Graduate, then watch Midnight Cowboy, then All the President's Men, then Rain Man, then Tootsie! Then go back and watch Marathon Man, Kramer vs Kramer, Papillion, Little Big Man, etc. etc.
This is my favorite rendition ( besides the original Disney cartoon) of the Peter Pan story! Robin Williams is such a legend and a genius!💕 And Dustin Hoffman was legendary as Captain Hook!💕 He can really pull the emotions out of you!! Great reaction!!🧚♂️🧚♂️🧚♂️
Normally, I don’t like Peter Pan lore. That was one tale I never gravitated to when I was a kid. But, this movie was my whole childhood. My parents let me watch all the family friendly movies with Robin Williams in it, and my parents were surprised I actually liked it. I still cry in certain scenes. Robin is sorely missed by all who loved him. ❤️
I watched this movie a lot when I was a child. This brings back memories.
Another of my faves! Dustin Hoffman KILLS IT as Cpt. Hook!!!
Robin was a genius & amazing at improvising lines
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, my 10th birthday was even Hook themed.
one of my fav childhood movies,. R.I.P robin Williams
Because everyone is going to bring this up:
Star Wars ties into this movie in a small way. The kissing couple on the bridge that floated from the fairy dust. They were George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
I'll admit. Saw this when I was a kid when it first came out and just thought it was okay. Enjoyed it more when I was older.
Interesting Fact for you James:
Because of how heavy Dustin Hoffman's costume was, he'd had to wear a suit that allowed the staff to pipe in cold water to keep Hoffman from passing out from heat exhaustion
I mainl remember that fact from when when Bob Hoskins, who played Smee, appeared as a guest on "The Arsenio Hall Show" and Bob was telling Arsenio about that during the interview
Btw: Bob Hoskins also was in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" as the private detective who was trying to clear Roger of his accusations
So theres a TON of caneos in this...Carrie Fisher (of Star Wars fame) and George Lucas are the couple on London Bridge that get sprinkled with fairy dust, singer Phil Collins is the inspector that comes to Wendy's house, singer David Crosby and Glen Close also play members of Hook's crew (Glen is , in fact, the one who gets put into the "boo box." And Gwenyth Paltrow played the young Wendy when Peter is flashing back. "McGonagall's" real name is DAME Maggie Smith. She's a legend
And another bit of trivia...the early stages of this was a MUSICAL with Michael Jackson as Pan
I love this movie so much!!! Peter's son is also in What About Bob? with Julie Hagerty from Airplane! and Bill Murray from Ghostbusters, as well as Richard Dreyfuss from Steven Spielberg's Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. You should see Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate (1967), Midnight Cowboy (1970), All the President's Men, Rain Man (1989), Dick Tracy (1990), Tootsie, and Meet the Fockers; he was also the voice of Master Shi Fu in the Kung Fu Panda films. Bob Hoskins was not only in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? abut also the underrated mystery movie Shattered with Tom Berenger (from Platoon, Betrayed, Major League, and The Big Chill). This was the first big break for Gwyneth Paltrow (Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love, which defeated Saving Private Ryan, and best known as Tony Stark's Gal Friday, Pepper Potts).
There were cameos in this film by David Crosby, Jimmy Buffett, Oscar-nominee Glenn Close, Tony Burton (Apollo Creed's trainer in the Rocky franchise), writer-director George Lucas, Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), and Dustin Hoffman's little boy and girl.
Lookie Lookie I got Hookie! Best Peter Pan adaption ever! Love going on the pop culture ride with you!
