I look forward to this video, Scott. We used the other one you reviewed and recommended as a first time buyer, etc and it was awesome. We did notice stereo would be perfect for the other guitar, but that's what we learned. Keep up the killer videos, Scott.
Hi Scott, First of all, thank you for the time you spend doing these videos! For someone like me who is cursed with having to do hours and hours of research just to find a guitar pick I would try, trying to find guitar and IEM wireless systems has been easier to deal with thanks to you. That said, I picked up and have been using an Anleon S2 unit I found used locally but recently learned that that system is not good for a full band, bringing me to the Shure PSM300 and Senn G3/G4. Most of the cons on the PSM is the horrible battery life. A lot of people are saying that they can't even get through a 4 hour show with having to swap batts. I also can't decide between the G3 and G4. Depending on the band, the G3 is getting harder to find and I'm not sure if the upgrade from 3 to 4 is worth it...? Also, I'm not sure if you've reviewed this IEM, but I picked up a pair of Linsoul KZ AS10 5 driver buds but since I don't know what a good in ear monitor should sound like, i'm not sure if they're decent or not. Curious as to your thoughts on this subject too. Thank you again, and so sorry for the lengthy questionaire.
PSM300s do survive more than 4 hours. I know that for certain. G3 and G4 are extremely similar. If you get a better deal on the G3 it’s completely fine. They just make G4 now, but both are great 🤘
Great video. Thanks for a detailed and useful review. Hope you do similar process with the new Sennheiser XSW IEM Wireless In-Ear Monitoring System soon. Blessings.
Thanks 😊 and I just finished editing the Sennheiser EW300 IEM video haha. It will be out on Tuesday. I don’t know about the XSW, but I believe it’s similar. Spoiler alert: both are great, but I usually recommend sennheiser if you can afford the $200 more 👍 But both are great units
I actually just googled the XSW. I hadn’t seen those. Those seem to actually be the competitors to these Shure PSM300. They both have 24mhz of frequencies to find a clear signal. So my guess is the sennheiser makes the most sense because it’s cheaper for the same number of channels. But I’ve never used it so I can’t be 100% positive
Had sennheiser xsw-iem spent more than an hour to tune the hissing/noisy sound down no luck returned it.and bought psm300/p3ra j13 perfect for Las Vegas. Took me 2 minutes to set up and bingo super happy with it...using Panasonic eneloop 2450 mAh or ikea ladda 2450 mAh both coming from the same factory made in Japan I get more than 7hrs close to 8 hrs make sure battery is from Panasonic factory get the ikea cheaper.
Hey Scott! Thanks for this review, it really helped me out a lot. I was wondering if you've tried the ASI 3DME system and if you have, what's your take on it? Thanks!!!
I haven’t heard those, but my custom molds actually have that ambient filter in them which is pretty cool to avoid feeling the “isolation” some people don’t like from IEMs
Hi Scott, do you know if you need a licence for the particular frequency bandwidth that the psm300 offers? I’m based in the UK if that helps. Or can you use the psm300 for free with no issues?
All wireless depends on the country. 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz are universally allowed (which can lead to crowding). But usually you can find out which frequencies are allowed in your country. Most of the time you cannot buy ones that are not allowed in your country at the store. So I’m the USA, I cannot buy a wireless above 608mhz from a store or online US store 👍
Great video, thank you! Quick question, I've heard it's best practice to scan for the best frequency at every gig to minimize the like of interference. Do you need to sync the receiver & transmitter everytime after the frequency scan or do they stay connected after the first sync?
Good system. However... The P3RA receivers have been on backorder with all the major suppliers since the beginning of 2023. ETA is end of summer! Chip shortage.
I just bought the PSM 300 G20 only to find out they don't work in the Orlando area. I should have J13. They have a ticking and hissing noise. Know of any hack around this? Thanks for the great videos
very useful guide I have the Shure PSM 300 system and the P3 body pack though I am thinking of the P3A - Can you add in this how what the LEf right dials are doing on the P3 pack in so far as to they send to one ear or the other ear and which positon is the mix . It is not clear from the markings - thanks
Yeah you can control the panning with stereo wireless controllers. If you set it to mono it will change the volume of what’s plugged into the left or the right.
hi, I'm a complete technophobe and don't understand what the 'group' and 'channel' are for and what settings I should put them on? I just want to plug in and play to hear myself.....not bothered at all about getting a 'mix' of other musicians on stage. Also, given this, should I just stick to 'mono' input and line in? please explain. Thank you again!
Group and channel just set the frequency. If you are just using one or a few, you don’t really have to worry about it. Just scan for the best channel, sync it, and you’ll be good. Mono is if you want mono or stereo. I will say in general to your “technophobe” comment… If you are musician using gear, you should commit to understanding it. With any gear… guitars/wireless/pedals. Not understanding any gear is a recipe for disaster. So I do recommend you learn a bit more about it. I have a beginners guide to in ear monitors which will help: ruclips.net/video/Kp0tQCfxzWg/видео.html
We have been dithering on going wireless for the IEM, either PSM300 or Sennheiser G4, but we have A/B tested the current set-up (Behringer P2s) against the Film-makers G4 Tx & Rx with the same 5 driver IEMs (KZ AS10s). Once the levels were set up correctly, the audio quality of the P2s were noticeably better and my wife's singing had a tangibly higher level of confidence. This has been putting us off buying either wireless set-up. Is there a noticeable drop in audio quality from the wired P2 solution to a 'proper' wireless set-up such as the PSM300 or the G4? Thanks
@@ScottUhlMusic - thanks, appreciate it, that suggests that the G4 film-makers set-up is not a good rig to try to get a reference point from for a G4 IEM. In the UK, the G4 twinpack price is cheaper than the PSM300-K3E so that makes it a no-brainer!
I would like to know wich model this is?Apparantly not all models have mix mode? myine is a p3t g20. .thanks for your help,I need to buy a better model i guess, cheerz.
Hey scott, i have an issue now where my body pack tends to frequently cut off while im at a gig. It recently started but i think its because in our rack we have like 6 senheizer transmitters and one sure transmitter. What do you recommend? Would getting an antena help this problem?
Yup. An antenna combiner is what you will need. That’s too many antennas piled on top of each other. Or you can move yours from the rack and place it elsewhere on stage with a longer cable. But too many wireless in a rack is definitely a problem 👍
I saw a video with Hetfield talking about Metallica using hearing protection and how many bands have downplayed the idea. He never said what he was using in the short video though. Do you know if they use special musician specific earplugs or maybe they use in ears now. I just bought some Alpine Pro plugs and have yet to try them out. I've never used in ears. Does it take away from playing live? Thanks for vids!
With in ear monitors you don’t need to have very loud volume because the sound goes directly to your ears instead of having to do the volume wars with the wedges. Especially since you have to have the wedges be louder than the drummer. IEMs are probably the best investment a musician can make in my opinion. It helps save your hearing (assuming you don’t blast your ears haha) and it’s just a better mix over all
If I run stereo with vocals in left and an instrument in right do I hear only vocals in my left ear and only the instrument in the right or does it mix them? Hoping it can mix them. I just need my vocal and bass in my ears.
If you do that and set it to stereo, yes you will only hear vocals left and instrument right. However, if you set the pack to mono and do that, you can control the levels of each in your ears 👍
Are you hearing a lot of floor noise/hiss sound when you have the pack on but there’s no instruments playing? I’m trying to figure out if it’s a gain issue or a group/channel issue. Once we have everyone playing, the hiss isn’t noticeable because we drown out the hiss.
Hiss can be from so many things, it’s hard to know exactly where it’s coming from. Occasionally I will but I just tune it out now. But it can come from so many different stages
I’m trying to figure out how i can tell if a system runs on 2.4 or 5 ghz I’m watching a shit ton of your videos, i just think I’m missing it, I’d like to get a new system and I’d like for it to be on 5 if possible
How does the limiter work? For example if set at -3db, will that prevent the incoming signal from peaking more than 3db if there is a spike over that amount?
Whatever the threshold level is… setting the threshold to -3db will mean that the limiter will kick in 3db below that point. That’s how I always understood it
