The number of blades on the iris doesn't cause the bokeh itself, it just affects the quality of the bokeh. In order to have the shallow depth of field you simply use a lens with a larger aperture, but the number of blades on the iris will give a more pleasing bokeh effect when you're stopped down a bit. When you have an iris with like 5 blades, bokeh'd light in the background will look like pentagons, while an 8 blade they'll be delicious bokeh balls.
I don't know if you got a reply yet, but yes, the camera can be used with the Mac. I own one myself, and I love the thing. All we do with mine is plug it into the camera using the USB and then log and transfer to Final Cut Pro. Hope this helps!
The rattling that you hear when you shake the camera is the stabilization system. When the camera powers on and stabilization is activated, the rattling should go away.
Wow, did you notice how sad the animals looked? The Penguins looked like they were denied parole for the 6th time, and the Zebra looked like it was contemplating suicide, but needs opposable thumbs.
I own this camera. Started tracking it as soon as I saw it show up in some catalogues. Purchased from Calumet Video, Oak Park (Chicago). -No rattling in my camera's audio panel or anywhere else. First I've heard of it. Speculation that there might be a small batch of bad assemblies sounds right. Can't find anything wrong with this unit unless it might be too small and too lite. Best video camera I've ever used including Ikegami and Sony.
I own the "step down" Canon HF G10. It seems odd that the XA10, like the HF G10, would not have the option to record audio using uncompressed LPCM. Instead, it uses a highly compressed format despite having the array of connectivity options (i.e. XLR mic inputs). Sound quality is an important area for me, and it gets frustrating when older camera have superior audio compared to today's AVCHD format. Somebody in the AVCHD development stage made a conscientious decision to make audio worse.
That was a funny scene and very appropriate to bleep the stronger (possibly swearing) words for RUclips's younger audience. Good comprehensive video SoldierKnowBest.
It films in a 4:2:0 color space and records AVCHD format, which are not broadcast standards (true broadcast standards are 4:2:2 color space and MPEG-2 format). However the video is VERY high quality and is excellent for private use (short films, student filmmaking, event recording, etc.).
Hey, the the noise that you hear is the audio controls in the handle, they are loose and easy to use but rattle around side to side. I have this camcorder and noticed if you put your finger over the little switches it doesn't make the noise. :)
I was just Googling on the net for a good camera for recording live music...and what I should have done from the beginning is check Soldier's channel first! This looks like just what I need!! Thanks Soldier Knows Best!
Thanks for an awesome review ! You made all the tech stuff understandable and you addressed the audio prob people report clearly . Nicely put together. Love your reviews !Great stuff ! Best wishes to you, Bright.
Try keeping the camera horizontal, only shake gently, and turn it on. If the camera is not on, electronics that stabilize the image aren't engaged, and the optics are just floating on a very light spring. I don't have this particular camera; that's how it works for my far cheaper canon camera.
I realise this video is basically 3 years old... But I thought I would just say this anyways... that I'm fairly certain that 'rattling sound' is the audio control buttons, they are apparently quite loose, hence the rattle! :)
I just received mine. This was a very nice introductory video for it. Good job. BTW, I got it for 1299 on Amazon. I bought it even knowing about the rattle, which they say is easily fixed with some scotch tape.
Definitely. Someone paying $2,000 a few years ago was still getting a deal. It is the most amazing camera I've ever seen. I even went on Ebay and found good used optional lenses. I got the tele and the wide angle, which I just used to film a G rated love scene of a film I am using it on. I am really impressed with it. You can instantly and clearly double the zoom with the touch of a button. It has lovely depth of field, which I explore all the time, you really become a real photographer with this camera. Even though I am a videographer, it is so simplified, I was able to truly understand photography with it.
This was a very GREAT video camera review! This explained every question I had and didn't go to in depth it was perfect! Thanks so much for uploading this I am considering getting this for future use. It's too bad it's about 2000 dollars however but compared to everything else it is pretty great overall
I have the Canon HFM-30...big fan, but it's time for an upgrade. This xf100 is a bit out of my league (and budget). This seems nice. Love the dual SD card option.
I think that Canon Reflex are made for really professional purposes and stuff like web series etc ... but the have some problems like zoom and focus and they aren't so comfortable to hold to shoot a video. You must use 'em with a proper kit with follow focus, shoulder mount etc... but you get awesome quality higher than any camcorder and changable lenses. XA10 is really good to shoot other kind of videos in a better way like a reportage, documentary, vlog ... without any zoom/focus problems :)
Hey man, thanks for the review, I got this camcorder recently - got a few test videos on my channel I am very impressed with how good it is - used to have the sony vg10e and I much prefer the XA10
I wonder if the rattling you are hearing is the release latches on the XLR connectors? Also wondering if the camera has an audio input meter? I am considering buying 3 of these for use in our recording studio and having an audio meter on the camera would be a great feature. Great video BTW. Thanks for taking the time to post it!
I still use if for video shoots. I have all kinds of cameras, but when I want something small and light I get out the XA10 and GH10. I get real good 1080p and with no trouble. The files are small and easy to work with.
Hey bud wanted to personally thank you for the excellent review. I think I'm gonna make this my first prosumer cam due to the IR and XLR capabilities. Hopefully my handle won't rattle :)
Hey soldier, so I thought that I should just throw this out there, but in your videos, you mostly just summarize things, other than saying what's good or bad about the product. Like ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy, tldtoday, or jon4lakers, they tell you the pros, and cons. Don't take this the wrong way. Your videos are really good. All im saying is just to change it upa little bit. On behalf of all the people that watch your videos, I'm sure some people could agree with me. Best of luck Soldier.
hey, i was watching your video cause i just got a xa10. For the rattling part, you mention, nobody is going to shake it that hard when recording of course. Either is going to be on a tripod or hand held keeping it steady. In you footage i didn't hear that noise. I guess people are shaking it to much that you hear that sound.
pretty nifty especially the object tracking, also the lens didn't seam to have any chromatic abbreviations(which is outstanding for a 10x zoom lens), but the low light and overall video detail can't keep up with the 5d2. i think i'll stick with the 5d2 for now, even with its useless auto-focus & the need for a rig to hold it properly. thanks for your review
@braberdebrabel22 DSLR's use a color chip that has a very high heat output for every frame. That's why extended recording can break or diminish the camera. It makes sense then to have a camcorder that has less color fidelity but can record dedicated video.
jonathan i have so little experience, but i can promise you that at least on fcpx, which is the black-box-for-total-noobs that i have always dreamed of, you can mix just about anything. i pull stuff down from the web, use stuff from my canon pocket camera, use stuff ingested onto my hard drive through about three different machines so i can get images off an old panasonic that doesn't even have a firewire. fcpx absorbs them all, and then you're off.
That manual focus ring just made me like it 2x more! Also, can I put it on a tripod? If I get his camera, I want to get an anti-shake/stabilizer rig for skate films or any films for that matter.
Thank you. Q: I made cooking videos in a log cabin [read: DARK] I have reflectors and plenty of light boxes, but I've found that I can't get good color/quality with my panasonic cam corder. I've been using a Canon 7D to shoot, but it's onerous as a single person show. I'm looking at this camera...yea? ney? Thanks for the great video. I so appreciate it.
I have used a friends XA10 a few times. Must say for the money no one can touch this camera. As far as that goes it beat many that cost even more money. by far this is not a pro video camera but it is great for internet videos. Canon just announced a XA20 with a bigger sensor but no 64 gig internal memory. But it still has 2 SD slots and upped the price a few 100 dollars. Would like to see both Sony and Canon stop make so many models and combine more features into less models. Just $top it!
*doesn't have, not isn't And actually yes it does, I have two, they screw onto the front. They don't change the way a DSLR does. Must've been the mic you were using.
Nice job on the review, pretty much exactly what we needed to know and see about this camcorder before buying. Price seems to be dropping a bit and is now 1799.00 on amazon. Time to buy soon. People, don't whine about the price, this is pro level. Go buy a consumer level camcorder if this is too expensive for you. This is for the pros and people doing indie films and serious amateur film makers. You will need software that can handle AVCHD format, don't forget this as the cost can be high.
I have used this camera many times and I must say it is amazing. I didn't have rattle problems but if not used properly you will get HORRIBLE noise (video noise) in the video and it will look disgusting. But otherwise well worth the money
@SoldierKnowsBest The xa10 is great for long recording times and has better audio than the 60d. the 60d has bad audio capabilities and a low record time due to the camcorder tax in Europe
6:56 did you really just bleep your swearing with the word bleep lmao
I sold my child to buy this camera
😀
hi dad its been 8 yrs🥲
😢
😀
I was watching this and considering, then looked it up on ebay. No longer considering :/
why
The number of blades on the iris doesn't cause the bokeh itself, it just affects the quality of the bokeh. Kordas Productions lol omg

the rattling is the buttons themselves. if u taped them or something the rattling would stop.
emily wendling what tape?
tape that sticks...
I'm Brian wrong
...?
The rattling that you hear when you shake the camera is the stabilization system. When the camera powers on and stabilization is activated, the rattling should go away.
Wow, did you notice how sad the animals looked? The Penguins looked like they were denied parole for the 6th time, and the Zebra looked like it was contemplating suicide, but needs opposable thumbs.
Richy Rich they looked normal to me
That zebra looked pretty happy to me
I own this camera. Started tracking it as soon as I saw it show up in some catalogues. Purchased from Calumet Video, Oak Park (Chicago).

Can't find anything wrong with this unit unless it might be too small and too lite. Best video camera I've ever used including Ikegami and Sony.
Hahahahaahah!! The Zebra at 6:18! I'm surprized if this doesn't get flagged lol :)

good review...
LOL at the zebra... once you see it...
Mike Y oh
Can’t stop laughing 😂
That was a funny scene and very appropriate to bleep the stronger (possibly swearing) words for RUclips's younger audience.
Good comprehensive video SoldierKnowBest.
What camera used to shoot Canon camera?
It films in a 4:2:0 color space and records AVCHD format, which are not broadcast standards (true broadcast standards are 4:2:2 color space and MPEG-2 format). However the video is VERY high quality and is excellent for private use (short films, student filmmaking, event recording, etc.).
lol "You look like Ashy Larry"
Cool review btw, thanks!
Hey, the the noise that you hear is the audio controls in the handle, they are loose and easy to use but rattle around side to side. I have this camcorder and noticed if you put your finger over the little switches it doesn't make the noise. :)
6:19 Something is fishy about that zebra...
😹😹
Yes I believe it can. You'll have to look at online and see.
OMG I FOUND YOU! AFTER A YEAR I LOST YOUR USERNAME! HAHAHAHA!
Lol nice
Straight to the point fast and no fluff
Hysterical and informative review. Thanks for taking the time to create it!
Hey Soldier, enjoyed that, the camera stuff was cool and so were you. Good luck with all!
I agree, you want the biggest possible when you are paying more. I would like it to be the size of a car as well.
I was just Googling on the net for a good camera for recording live music...and what I should have done from the beginning is check Soldier's channel first! This looks like just what I need!! Thanks Soldier Knows Best!

Thoughts? Great Camera!

Never mind Canon XA10 what are you recording with? the quality is amazing!...
best reviews on youtube. he has everything i do, plus more.
I realise this video is basically 3 years old... But I thought I would just say this anyways... that I'm fairly certain that 'rattling sound' is the audio control buttons, they are apparently quite loose, hence the rattle! :)
I've used both, and I'm actually using a G10 right now. And yessir, it seems to be true.
I just received mine. This was a very nice introductory video for it. Good job. BTW, I got it for 1299 on Amazon. I bought it even knowing about the rattle, which they say is easily fixed with some scotch tape.
New.

I have waited for this for a long time !
soldier knows best, I respect you.
Tim: Before we start, let's get a word from our sponsor Netflix.
Tim: Hi. This is Netflix.
I just compared the Canon M500 & the Canon XA10-They both have the (1/3" CMOS sensor)What an awesome deal for the M500.Just $550.00
This was a very GREAT video camera review! This explained every question I had and didn't go to in depth it was perfect! Mark, what lens are you using on your DSLR to film this? You've got some smooth background blur there. Great review!
I think that Canon Reflex are made for really professional purposes and stuff like web series etc ... but the have some problems like zoom and focus and they aren't so comfortable to hold to shoot a video. Hey man, thanks for the review, I got this camcorder recently - got a few test videos on my channel I am very impressed with how good it is - used to have the sony vg10e and I much prefer the XA10
the sound on the handle is from the metal locking of the XLR connection
NERDGASM happy you got this one too, been waiting on the review Nice paris hilton mode too i mean night vision
What did you use to record this video? Picture quality is excellent!
I wonder if the rattling you are hearing is the release latches on the XLR connectors?
Also wondering if the camera has an audio input meter? I am considering buying 3 of these for use in our recording studio and having an audio meter on the camera would be a great feature.
Great video BTW. Thanks for taking the time to post it!
the rattle is the XLR retainers. Just put a bit of tape on them.
6:20 - Zebra's Rock Out with their Kawks out too???? LMAO.....
@HDv1de0 - Just a small correction, 7D has a APS-C CMOS sensor which is smaller than the 5D.
do you buy all these new products yourself? just out of curiosity. love your vids!
Tim: Walking back to the house...got a pail of sand
Him: You look stupid.

Soldier, thanks for reviewing cams. Always interesting for us video folk. Very detailed, love it. Thanks!

Definitely going to consider this camcorder after watching your review. Will check for that rattle first before I buy
Love your style..appreciate all the humorous touches..
Hey, are there any compatibility issues with this camera and a mac? Thanks for the great review. I want this camera!
Superb review, very professional throughout; great work!
Thanks for the review. I have been wondering if this camera is any good, and from your vid I think it is.
hey, i was watching your video cause i just got a xa10. For the rattling part, you mention, nobody is going to shake it that hard when recording of course. i think i'll stick with the 5d2 for now, even with its useless auto-focus & the need for a rig to hold it properly.
thanks for your review
rattling might be the xlr clips. try pluiging in two xlr cables, or dummy plugs.
looking forward to get this... Thanks for the review!
Between the IR and double SD card slots this seems like it would be a great choice for a low budget documentary.
@braberdebrabel22 DSLR's use a color chip that has a very high heat output for every frame. That's why extended recording can break or diminish the camera. It makes sense then to have a camcorder that has less color fidelity but can record dedicated video.
Nice review. Looking forward to the xa20
yes it can- 58mm. 58mm opteka death recommended.

Like the camera but would prefer a next step up. you did not show stablelization at all I would like to see how steady you need to be.
That manual focus ring just made me like it 2x more! Also, can I put it on a tripod? If I get his camera, I want to get an anti-shake/stabilizer rig for skate films or any films for that matter.

the outdoor shots are nice

Love the review man! Planning to start a new channel soon and i needed a video camera and this really helped me with my decision so thanks!
The rattling problem is not the camera itself but the XLR switches on the left side. I have got the same problem.
"but first, a word from our sponser, netflix... hi im netflix!"
Very informative, thanks. You and your brother are funny. I see you have a mac, what kind of editing program do you use.
Nice camera and great review!

@coolseanpark Around 2,000$ in Canada at Future Shop, so if you're American, then its $1,975
oh yeah it is!
I have used this camera many times and I must say it is amazing. I didn't have rattle problems but if not used properly you will get HORRIBLE noise (video noise) in the video and it will look disgusting. But otherwise well worth the money
dude great vid, The room is way to live. Please put some fabric on the walls to chill out the echo. That would make em cherry.
I wasn't convinced to buy this camera after this review for the price. Thanks for the review! Lol.
Thank you very much for your reviews, very comprehensive and detailed. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Hmm... The d5100 costs about 500 bucks (€ in my case). The 550d is the equivalent on the Canon side. Also take a look at the GH1 from Panasonic.
@localProduction1 Amazon. but if you bung it into google and select shopping tab, you'll see that generally it averages about $1500
Man, that Zebra almost got a bigger mushroom tip than me! lol
Awesome video man. Clear and concise.
You've made many skateboarders happy.
that is a thing of beauty!
@SoldierKnowsBest The xa10 is great for long recording times and has better audio than the 60d. the 60d has bad audio capabilities and a low record time due to the camcorder tax in Europe
-Dad films graduation, loses camera and sd cards-
Dad - "it's okay honey, the second SD card has the same footage"
Dad - oh wait...
this dude never takes a breath
very well put together and presented. Very helpful. thanks
Thanks for talking fast, it saves our time.
