I have an older model of this camcorder. Video quality is the same. I like the camcorder. However, the biggest problem I've had with it is the chromic aberrations in bright direct or reflected light situations. This does seem to increase the more you zoom in. I've noticed it in most of the reviews of the camera, including some in yours.

Yes, but how do you pause recording while you're recording and unpause the camera?

Hi Mike. Very well made and informative video. I am looking into one of these as a budget option to record my kids' soccer games. Is this the best option, or do you think there might be a better choice? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

If you don’t need an external mic then you could also go with the cheaper Sony CX405. ruclips.net/video/7HjZLmt-pJ4/видео.htmlsi=TjE7eWEH-bpR4pHv

@@MikesWorld1 Thanks for the quick response. I will definitely look into it.. It is a shame that Sony didn't include the external mic adapter because that would have made it a no brainer!!

    I really enjoyed your video.
I have a chance to pick up an R80 but have a question I hope you can answer.
Do you think this R80 camcorder could do a clear in focus close up shot
on a small 5 inch x 3.75 inch movie screen on my 8mm movie projector ?
I have previously used a vhs camcorder to transfer super 8mm sound movies to vhs using this method.
I no longer have the vhs camcorder.

You could put the R80 on a tripod and do this

Mike- is this camera better than The Sony hdr cx 405?

Honestly, it depends on what you are using it for. If you watch my videos, including this one, you'll see I usually start out in front of a brick wall or some type of background. It's actually a green screen. That is shot with this camera because it has an external mic input, and a threaded ring on the front that can accommodate a small teleprompter. The Sony can't do either. However, the Sony has a wider angle lens and is very easy to use. It however shoots AVCHD. The Canon shoots .mp4. Why does that matter? Because the .mp4 files can be imported to an iPhone and edited using iMovie. Can't do that with the Sony. So, I use both. The green screen shot is with the Canon. When you see an overhead shot showing something on a white mat, that's the Sony camera. At some point I make a video showing how I create RUclips videos. The Sony is great as a dashcam, which I use it that way often. The Canon does not hold an image and you get the jello effect as the car hits bumps. So, again, how are you going to use the camera? If you answer that then I can give you a better answer for your situation.

I just bought one to record church sermons now I read that it doesn't record long videos as one large file? And that I should possibly get the older HR72 model that uses AVCHD format? I just don't want to get bogged down with editing and all that stuff. I just want to keep it as simple as possible.

No camera will record as one long clip. They all use the exFAT file structure which limits clips to 4GB. The camera would need to record to NTSF formatted cards to keep it all as one file. However, since the R80 records .mp4, you can actually import those files to your iPhone camera roll and use iMovie to combine and render them as one clip, then upload that file to wherever you want. It’s pretty simple.
