Picketing your horse

  • In this video we go through the process of teaching a horse the patience that is needed to be picketed. We teach them to not fight, and to give to a rope around the fetlock. This benefit also carries across to situations where the horse might get caught in wire. They will not be as likely to struggle and fight against it and hurt themselves. And then in this video we also follow through and picket the horse. This is a recording of one of the classes that we taught here at Dry Creek Wrangler School.

Love the caring this man shows for his horses through his gentle, kind communication and how the horse responds to this with trust. It's beautiful to watch how the man and his horse relate to each other.

I don't know a thing about horses and training them but I'm so impressed with the respect that you show your horses. It's like a mentor/partner relationship.

I’ve made it a priority to teach this to all my horse’s, it will stop most injuries to your horse and maybe stop a bad wreck! Any resistance they feel they stop !

Good lesson Dewayne, well done. Good example of setting the horse up for success and setting yourself up for success. Thanks for the video. Augie :-)

Other things this helps. Fence when pastured, as mentioned, hobble training, and riding thru kudzu, sawbriars, or any number of vines that grows here in the Southeast (Alabamian here). It's like to add it's a good idea to lead the horse near the end of the rope if it's one with the tendency to high tail it outta here when you step away.

I would like to add one caution here. DO NOT USE A CHAIN TO PICKET YOUR HORSE. When I was about ten years old my 16 year old neighbor picketed his horse in the field behind our houses. He didn't have a long enough rope, so he added a length of chain to the rope, secured the chain to a metal stake and the rope around the fetlock, just like you demonstrated. Many hours later he found his horse with the chain wrapped around the fetlock and the chain had almost cut off his foot due to the sawing motion caused by the horse trying to get loose. Apparently this had been going on for hours. The horse was saved thanks to a good vet and was later sold. Be wise, be intelligent and have fun.

Twist link dog chain I'm guessing. Smooth welded link chain near the horse helps against ankle burn and the weight of it lessons the chances of getting it tangled. Some folks put the rope thru a water hose for the first 8-10 ft to help guard against rope burn, too.

If you are doing this by yourself at home for the very first time might it be a good idea to be in a round pen or small paddock?
I could see my horse with halter lariat and all headed for the hills over in the next county.
That sure is a nice horse you got there and pretty too.

Same process for hobble training. I don't like wrapping anything around my horses neck without me being there. Leaving a halter on yes....lead no.

I have an issue with this, if something comes around and frightens him and he runs I would be worried about rope burns and tendon damage. I do not have a problem with tethering just where the rope is. I prefer tethering with a neck strap, I dont have animals getting caught up etc. Not criticising your method, as I can see you know what your doing.
