The Newark Bay train disaster 61 years later
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 сен 2019
- Another mysterious accident this time in the Newark Bay. An ordinary scoot across the bay quickly turns to disaster when the CNJ commuter plunges over the bridge. But how can this happen when there was every precaution possible to stop such an accident?

2:30 - Gotta love train simulator crash physics.
Yep gotta love em
Ts physics are pretty ridiculous, especially space launches
Should've used msts

“Was it 100 percent preventable?”
*Yes. All he had to do was stop the damn train*
LOL
"Was it 100% preventable?"
Ay, don't ask a wise man, ask a fool.
ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS FOLLOW THE DAMN TRAIN CJ!

ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS STOP THE DAM TRAIN, CJ!!
Another fabulous documentary by Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions.
My take on this is both engineers where dead asleep because there is no other way to explain this accident. Probably also rigged the deathman switch, that was common practice in the old days.
No dead man switch on this engine, I believe that both crewmen were either asleep on just not paying attention.
@@francoisdvanderwesthuizen6772 I think being asleep is the main factor anyway. I mean missing 3 red signals in a row and 50mph is just another indirect indication that someone was not paying attention at all.
Or maybe they wanted to kill themselves. I hope it’s just that they fell asleep and nothing more sinister
a possible explanation would be in that early EMD GP9's sometimes had problems with Carbon Monoxide leaks into the cabin, though no other fatal cases were known, lesser degrees of poisoning were recorded... such poisoning would be easily masked by the effects of drowning, and would explain a very subtle incapacitation of both crew members, with possibly the weight of one fully opening the throttle to result in the excessive speed... Would that sound possible? What do people think of such an explanation?
Good thinking. Perhaps that was the true cause.
Yes. And I wouldn’t show up in the autopsy.
I saw a video of a plane crash that was caused by the pilot being incapacitated by carbon monoxide a few days ago. That was my first thought and then I saw your comment. I think it is very posible that's what happened to this train.
@@trailrider0194 the Aviation-Safety channel AOPA one? the guy who woke up in a snowy field in his airplane.... I was thinking of that one among other stories when I was writing (happens way to often, though the pilots are rarely so lucky as to survive uninjured or even just survive)
@@stanislavkostarnov2157 Yes, that was the one I was thinking of.
Great documentary! I honestly never heard of this wreck even though it was a horrible crash. Anyway great video.
That's what I wanna try doing now. Covering wrecks not many people heard of to help share forgotten stories
I also never heard of this accident, but it sad, how this is an accident that can never be truly solved.
Why am I watching this while I’m on a train????
You're doomed man
Because you like his Documents so you have ways to compare them to now with safety systems
Come on, people. Trains are one of the safest ways of travel.
Nobody Forced you Fella, you could have Skipped & Moved to Another Clip!
Lol
how it could have been prevented: DONT PUT A DERAIL SO CLOSE TO AN OPEN DRAWBRIDGE
it should have been a few feet from the 3rd signal (5-35 i geuss )
One of my earliest memories is my mom and I watching the recovery efforts the next day, and seeing a train car full of scuba divers pull up to the bridge area. Years later I took EMT training from Dr. Francis Boyle, who was the first doctor on the scene of this disaster. In discussing the disaster, he said what he saw in the passenger cars equaled what he had seen on the battlefield in WW2.
Just another day in Sodor...
LOL
Best comment
You have caused all sorts of confusion and delay!
Best comment I have seen in a long time
Thomas. I want you to go to your shed!
But what about dead?
I find it amazing some of the wrecks that are rebuilt and sent back to service.
Those engines were so new at the time it made sense to.
@@B-and-O-Operator-Fairmontcnj 1532 was scrapped not long after
Same to 1526
The way it works in the UK is that our dead man's pedal (Driver safety device) is built in with the Driver vigilance device.
The driver has to keep the pedal depressed whilst driving, but if the driver hasn't touched any controls in 30 secs the DVD will sound an alarm. The driver then has to lift his foot off the pedal and depress it again to reset the system and prevent an emer brake application, so using brake shoes or a heavy kit bag wouldn't work in the UK.
R.I.P. newark bay bridge 1921-1980s
On September 15th, 1958 after steam era ended, Central of New Jersey Commuter Train 3314 falls of the bridge at 10:01 a.m. into the bay below. 48 were killed and 48 were involving injured the accident.
Do the New Market train wreck next . The New Market train wreck happened on September 24 1904
that's 100 years and 5 days before my birthday
no joke.
Dana Lee Doubt That’s gonna happen. He’s focused on Ladbroke Grove after he did Southall today.
REALLY?! TELL ME!!
Train Fan This happened 1 day and 98 years before I was born.
There was a very similar accident involving locomotives in Portland Oregon in 1983
I'm from holland and we had a terrible train crash too. On January 8, 1962. At 9 o' clock in the morning, 2 passenger trains collided head to head with eachother. The driver of one of the trains was blindfolded by fog. The accident happend at Harmelen junction, near the the capital city of Utrecht
5:40 reminds of that Hinton Train Collision video you did a while back where two of SD40-2s on train 413 had reset safety control while the lead engine did not if I remember how you stated it in that video correctly.
A CN GP38-2W was leading the train also the crews found the dead man petal annoying to operate with
A couple quick corrections here. A 1:07 it's stated that the train consisted of two GP7's whereas at 5:40 it's mentioned the power for the train was two GP9's which would be correct. The second correction being at 5:20 in reference to the dead mans pedal. It's stated that if the pedal does not remain pressed down while the consist is in motion the train will make a emergency stop. While the stop part of that statement is true, the train won't go into emergency but rather a full service brake application will be applied in the same fashion as with modern PTC.
honestly, I know people shouldn't jump to a conclusion, but does anyone else suspect suicide by the fireman?
6:30 - I like this signal bridge because of how oddly it’s placed. Not many of theses signals still around.
2:23 train: Nah imma just keep going. I hate my life in this damn city any way
Another NJ video! Finally some recognition for my home state
Jedi Master Joseph and Darth Aidan me too
Same
Loved this video. I really enjoy your attention to detail. However, just for future reference, Bayonne is pronounced “bay-OWN.”
2 unsolved train wreck documentaries in a row? now that is some good stuff keep it coming thunder. I love to hear those people's theories about what happened on those train wrecks!
My cousin in old bridge told me about this mysterious train accident. We had a small discussion on what might have happened. It is still a mystery to all
I always pass by that area when I’m seeing family. Thank you so much for doing this Tyunderbolt!!!
CNJ essentially equipped their diesels with boat horns, and not just the Fairbanks-Morse ones.
An interesting thing I learned watching old news reels of this disaster was that a passenger who survived the Woodbridge Disaster was also on board and survived this accident as well. That guy must be cursing his luck in trains
Out of all the possibilities of train wrecks, something like this terrifies me the most.
7:25 I always get awestruck when see that picture. Can't tell where one train ends and the other begins
Oh yeah that is the Hinton train collision. It happened when a via rail train, the combined super continental and jasper to prince rupert, crashed into a CN manifest which failed to go into a sighting to let the via rail pass.
Really was a crazy wreck to see. R.I.P. the 23 deaths. 😔
Your videos are amazing. I want you to know you have a fanbase that waits for your videos to come out. Also, I have a book the commemorates the New Jersey Central Railroad.
You should do the wreck of the blue comet next
Hang on, you talking about the steam locomotive called the blue comet?! I never knew that thing wrecked!
@xtremegaming1837 It happened in 1939 but the wreck didn't involve 833 but an earlier Pacific 820
I live in Newark and it is beautiful
Nice, never saw this one. Being from New York City, I can tell you Bayonne is pronounced “Bay-OWN”. Haha
Great documentary! Keep it up!
The driver has officially failed the vibe test. :(
Vibe test???
I wonder if both the diesel locomotives and coaches are still around today in the 21st century? Probably not. And I’m surprised that 6 decades after this happen the answer to why the drivers of the locomotive didn’t stop the locomotive and ended up crashing into bay has still not been found why and I’m pretty sure the answer fill never be found again on how it happened
2:28 Holy shit the conductor left no clip turned on.
It’s bay oon not bayin I leave near the town I mean Bayonne
At least it’s not as terrible as the Louisiana one, more people were able to survive and free themselves in time. But what baffled me is why the train didn’t stop with the signal or at least didn’t attempt to stop but just kept going in a dive. It makes me think to the Moorgate tube crash in UK (the driver in that case was alone) also in that case of the cause of the accident remains unknown.
Just curious if the bridge had a specific time schedule for the lift up and down, and if yes, did the conductors of the trains that used those track known the time schedule? It’s makes the entire happenings more creepy the fact that the cause is unknown.
Thanks. I love to watch your videos and I learn so much about the wrecks!
Very interesting and well done.
and incase you are going to do next here's the list that i am thinking about now.
1. The harrow & Wealdstone train crash in 1952.
2. The Tangiwai railway disaster.
3.The Minaki train crash and disaster.
4.The Quintinshill railway disaster.
5.The Camp Mountain disaster.
6. The Irk valley rail disaster.
7. The Cootamundra railway disaster.
so what do you think?
WAY TOO MUCH
@@oakrail8100 he will do one at a time
@@trainfanjpt6056 But it will take year 2021 too be done with all disaster
@@oakrail8100 i know but maybe it will take some time. besides it just an idea anyways.
and also i change the ideas that i just sent from yesterday.
Your videos keep getting better and better. How about doing the Montparnasse derailment from October 1895.
This kind of reminds me of the 1993 Big Bayou Canot Train Accident, and possibly the 1986 Hinton Train Collision.
7:20 another reminder of that Hinton Train Collision video if you mind me bringing that up since it was found that crewmen on the CN put heavy objects on the deadman's petal up to the wreck.
As a CNJ fan this was the darkest moment in the railroad's history, Even though this was after the steam era the wreck was pretty bad
Dangit RUclips why was I not notified of this?
I love your videos. Always informative and even though they're about tragedy, they serve as reminders never to forget what can happen when people become too complacent. 👍
You have a lot of great videos man. Good job, very descriptive and informational. 👍
I think that the Newark Bay bridge should have been preserved for many more decades
Maybe the engineer was having a heart attack or some distress and his fireman was trying to assist him? Leaving them both distracted.
I really enjoy these videos
Great job with your documents thunderbolt 1000 siren production and I subscribe to your channel
The Real Life Equivalent of When The Rockford Sunsetgulch bridge is up
encore encore!!!👏👏 amazing documentary!
I was looking for a channel that talked about trains.
Your narrations are so good! Keep up the great work!❤ (i subbed btw)
Love your channel
How sad... NJ was my home state and I loved the CNJ. I wonder if this was a suicide of the engineer? I can envision a struggle in the cab with the fireman trying to get control of the train.
Hey nice to see you again!
Hey thunderbolt. I was wondering if you could make a documentary of the Durand circus train collision. It is from my home town.
2:22 until...
The train defies all laws of physics and matter!
Love this channel
Interesting...the accounts I had always read was that there wasnt a fireman, and the engineer had suffered a heart attack/stroke just before the accident
When the 2 diesels joined Conrail, which number was given to which engine?
R.I.P. newark bay railroad brige 1926-1980s
What happened after The Two GP7 Join conrail?.And what happened to the Coaches after the incident?
Most likely retired and then scrapped

@@oakrail8100 no there is a chance that both of them are still around

Okay So CNJ 1522 Join Conrail in 1976.
As for CNJ 1526.i don't now it went,But I am pretty sure It went to Conrail.
I am still looking
dang it I missed it but again another great one
I’m on the live stream or premiere. Can you do a septa train crash or a nyc subway crash plz
He said no asking for train wrecks
Whatever not of more than 2 questions
Also he did do a speta crash it was the roslin stashion crash.
Today marks the 62nd anniversary of this tragedy and to this day no one knows what the crew were doing before the train fell into the water. And who knows if it ever will be.
I'd Love To See You Do One On The 1978 Waverly, Tennessee Train Explosion.
Maybe the firemen was tired and the engineer said he could fall asleep and while he was the engineer had a heart attack?
Carbon monoxide in the cab? Or one crewman had a deathwish and knocked out the other guy? His face too messed up to determine he had been punched or conked before the wreck?
Damn it. Missed the premier. Pretty nice documentary anyway.
same
wow the crash was so bad that the train noclipped through the bridge, dayum
awesome video
Sir, what about the 1904 bridge collapse in that a passenger train was involved near Pueblo, Colorado? I overheard that 96 died in that disaster.
Well done
I felt that the computer generated graphics added to the story
Jersey central train crash oh my ..god
Woah woah woah. The train was a ghost train. I knew it!!
Wait there was a drawbridge in NJ!?!?!?!?
Yes in Newark but it was removed in the 1980s after it was deemed a hazard for ships
"Was it 100 percent preventable?"
Yes. All he had to do was pull the brakes, and stop the train. Very simple, but to him, was impossible.
Please trains, crash so we can see more documentaries of Thunderbolt
HOLD ON A MINUTE
The wreck of Santa Fe's San Diegan with two RDC cars at Redondo Jct. Los Angeles in Jan. 1956 would be a good one to do also.
Here's a suggestion for a future documentary. How about looking at the Granville disaster, which happened in Australia in January 1977.
Could u do the Harrow and Wealdstone rail disaster next??
6;19 HEY WHY IS THERE A SMOKING DOCTER

@@TheSonOfGoku. thanks
maybe there was a brief moment of insanity in the engineer causing him to derail the train.
Who made the baby face footage + can I use it?^^
Very nice documentary.
wow 61 years later
Thunderbolt must see this
Like if you wanna see it
This is a challenge, the challenge: you must try and do a train wreck from every state if you can, in the time span of 4-5 months
I really hope you read this because I really enjoy these videos and I want to see them more often
Thanks Thunderbolt
& that's why New Jersey Transit was Formed in 1979 to Replace Mom & Pop Train & Bus Systems in the Garden State that were a "Hot Mess", this Accident should have Never Happen.
& New Jersey Transit 40 Years Later is a "Hot Mess"!!!
reminder set
The island of sodor is probably the most dangerous island
fun fact:the bridge has been rebuilt and you can visit it
does this wreck remind you of the big Bayou anyone or is it just me even the fatality rates are similar?
Both the Bayou and Newark accidents are similar but both are totally different too in terms of causes
LARMARIO ya
Hence the disaster, i like the design of the drawbridge itself.
AND SIT AT THE BACK OF THE DAMN TRAIN JEEZ
