    Great to see you my friend! I still have my 9'2" board from 1962. Heavy, 50/50 rails and paddled great. Couldn't turn it then and still can't now! Luck and angled takeoffs were the only way to go down the line for me on that one. I have what they called a hybrid shape mid length at 7'6" epoxy and it's great fun like you say in most waves. Great video as usual! Stay well!

    Thank you for the videos, just subscribed. I had about a year off and am back in Indo. I am out of shape and put on some weight probably about 75 kg and 5'10" now but already dropping weight. I just bought a HS hypto 6'4" with about 44 liters of volume second hand. I am launching off the top of the wave instead of doing top turns if I don't start my turn mid wave. My favorite two boards I have are a Tomo Omni 6'0" that I had twin keels in and left in America and then I have a 5'6" Tomo Evo that I road with twin keels. I am not in shape to ride the latter yet and it wasn't easy but when I was into waves it was soooo fun. I like skatey, my stance is a little too high on the longer boards and maybe too narrow but the the keels on short boards made things amazing. I think the fin boxes on the hypto are too far back so I can't get my back foot behind them using keels. I'm running the hypto with 2+1. I've tried a high volume fish that was short and didn't get into anything really and was pretty surprised so I guess I'm not ready. I am interested in a daily driver that I can use in a variety of conditions, what would you recommend to check out?

    Heya I'm a beginner surfer, :) I really admire the way you talk about each surfboard, you treat them like a beatiful painting in an art gallery and I love that esscence! My dream is to shred on a shortboard and get barrelled once in my life. However I am very new and inexperienced, I believe my first surfboard should be a longboard or a mid length? I don't really have enough money to build a quiver and I am looking forward to only own 2 boards cause I live in a small apartment. I was wondering based on my situation how am I supposed to progress to ripping on shorter boards? Loved this video heaps, cheers!

    I still remember how we met and had a little chat in the skatepark in Paris France near La Defence.
    It was casual but I really appreciate how humble and interesting person you are!
    I would really appreciate your piece of advise: Out of the context but should i go for a smaller board size to feel more comfortable with duckdive on the bigger swell, or stick to more volume to be able to catch more waves?
    Thanks. Keep up with great content! Stay safe!

      Hi Roman..that was a while ago wasn't it ..2017 or 2019 ? but I think 2017 .. tell me what board your riding now and volume and thickness width , make and model and also what your riding now and we can see. Trading off wave catching for ease of duck diving can be a real issue that hold back progression for me.

      I'm riding 6.4, 36l epoxy. I'm 1.86m, 78 kg. I would rather feel more comfortable paddling in bigger volume even. So either my duck dive technique isn't perfect or either one have to eat it on the bigger sets anyway. Will work on both of them.
      I agree with you that the progression with catching more is the priority.

    Hey Tim, hope all is well. Hitting the waves for the first time this year in the US, New Jersey. Toward the end of last year I moved from a 9ft foam board to a 9’6’’ Torq long board. Was taking my daughter surfing, gave it a try and absolutely fell in love with it. I’m sticking with my long board, as I’m still very much a noob. 2 questions for you, when is it time to progress and what would be the next logical board to progress to?

      Hi Bob.... great to hear from you. The 8'6" Torqs ( you wrote 9'6" ) are super fun and glad your on a board you like and great to hear your daughter was so stoked ..Time to move on is when your happy going left and right and starting to get some turns in. But if as your on 9'6" ( do you mean 8'6" ? ) only move down about 6" each time. So around the 8' mark would be the next step

    • @bobellis2912
      @bobellis2912 3 года назад +1

      Hey Tim, thanks for the reply. I’m definitely on a 9’6”. Our waves in summer aren’t very big plus, not only am I a noob, my fitness level last year was quite terrible. So, popping up was difficult as my core strength was non-existent. Much stronger this year, lighter, but not as light as I’d like to be. The 9’6” floats me well and is quite stable.

      @@bobellis2912 ah sorry about that ..I'm just looking at the board on their site now ...that's for sure a wave catcher so looking that the next logical stage would be to go to a 9·0 but only do that when you get to try a demo board maybe ..that would help a lot ..and if you can get some training done to work on core strength

    Hi Tim, I'm 53 years old, 5'9" height and 155 lbs. After about a year of learning to surf on an 8' foam board, I transitioned to a 7'2" epoxy funboard (47L) and have had great fun on it for the past 2 years. I'm at a stage where I'm working on cutbacks which is where I believe my current board is holding me back. I would like to replace it with a shorter board that would also function as a one board quiver where it's still easy to ride and cruisy on all types of waves (1-6 ft beach breaks mainly). I thought about a shorter funboard, but I've been wanting to explore some newer designs which take advantage of volume but in a more compact shape. Thanks in advance for any guidance!

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for that question and your in the right place for so many different types of boards . I really like the boards from Jeff "Doc" at Surf Perceptions and you can have a chat with him and go the custom route and of course there are tons of other very good shapers in your area . But don't go too short too soon ..drop down to say 6'10" and around 20"1/2 to 3/4 as your quite light but make sure you keep lots of outline curve in the board and for me a round pin tail works in so many different waves. Stick to a good 3 fin set up too and 6'10 x 21 x 2" 3/4 with 43 Vol may be good .

    Hey Tim, how do you relate these boards to wave types? I feel like I've wasted a lot of time trying to learn to surf an 8ft+ whale of a board in waves like Famara, that I know you know super well. Punchy, aggro, chaotic onshore, you know the drill. I'd NEVER go back to anything bigger than maybe a 6'4 in those conditions, which are the reality basically everywhere along Europe's Atlantic coast. And I'd never recommend a bigger board than 7ft something to anyone except the absolute beginner just starting in the white water. Sure, a 6ft foamy is wobbly and you won't stand up any time soon, but constantly going over the handlebars of long board doesn't look like a great alternative either. What are your thoughts? (btw no mention if those relatively short high-volume foamies as a low-intermediate option?)

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 года назад +1

      Hi there ..thanks for those questions. It seems the N. Atlantic has not been kind to you but of course there are days, and lots at times, of super nice conditions in Europe. So for beginners then a longer 8' or 8' + soft board is fine but then we have to take in their ability level , weight ( very importantly ) and height and some bigger folks will really need to stay on a longer hard board for a while or even like the idea of long boarding itself. I like to get early intermediates on 7' to 8' boards and ramp up the width and volume and then go from there and I'm doing a lot of coaching on mid lengths that have a high turning capability. As for the shorter board and shorter soft boards they can be fine but often at intermediate level I'm seeing a big lack of style and control if we get to use them too much. So I will use sub 7 boards if I know those I coach can really put a board on rail correctly and catch lots of waves still. I didn't go for the description of the new super short soft boards for that reason and most of the good video out there of people using them when are all ready accomplished surfers ...lots of fun however.

    Any advice on moving down from a 8ft foam board? I have a 6”10 gun should I go to that or a slightly bigger one?

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 года назад +2

      Hi ..thanks for that Coming off a foam board of that length should be done step by step and depending on your weight and height ( ? ) and how well your catching unbroken waves the next length in a hard board would be about 7'3" to 7'6" really ..The 6'10" gun should stay in the garage maybe ..tell us your thoughts

    Hey awesome video on explaining the different types of surfboards.
    I'm pretty new to surfing and I'm looking at buying my first board. Ideally I would like to get an epoxy or a pu board as I feel like I get on with them better than the foam boards I've tried.
    I would like a board I can use for most types of waves and progress on so I don't have to change it after 6 months. I can catch an unbroken wave and I'm working on my bottom turns to get back into the power zone. Riding a (6.5 or 7 ft board).
    I was thinking that I didn't want a board to super long board so I was thinking a fish but now I have see your video I'm thinking a mid board would fit my skill level better ? I'm about 5" 8 and 70 kgs. What brands, type, size, shape and buoyancy should I be looking at ?
    Thanks for the help and I'll be sure to check out more of your videos.

    I’m fairly new to surfing had a few lessons here in uk. Started off on the big foam boards and did very well. Went and bought my own board which is a 7,6 nsp epoxy jist wondering if it’s maybe too small for me as a beginner.. I’m 6ft 83kg what do you think? The reason I ask is that I seem to be letting a lot of unbroken waves go under me.. but is that down to the wrong tools “surfboard” or bad technique?

    Hi! I’m 15 and just started to surf about 3 months ago. I’ve learned and have been using my 6’0 Odysea Skipper from Day 1 and go about once a week. I usually surf 2-5 ft waves. I’m looking to move down to a performance shortboard that’s around 5’10-5’6. But, I don’t know anything about volume or which design to get. But, I want to be able to slash and carve. I can turn and slightly carve on my 6’0, so what kind of board is best for me?

      Thanks for that and we get a lot of questions like that from clients on the courses . Your a big guy so don't be afraid to go for something like a nice mid range board which will work well for the waves your in as well. Channel Islands have this one cisurfboards.com/products/ci-mid and maybe you can get a custom one sent over

    I used the takiyama 9ft (in the pink) & had a blast on it . What board & size would you reccomend ? I’m in good shape , but I don’t want to tire myself out , where it’s harder

    Hi Tim!
    I'm 5'9 and about 160 pounds. I consider myself a beginner intermediate surfer (can go down the line and do some turns on the face of the wave) . Been riding a 7 foot sofboard. I'm able to catch let's say about 80% of the 3 to 5 ft unbroken waves i get. I was thinking about getting a 6'8 and 40L epoxy funboard, mid lenght.
    Is that a good option? What you think should be my next step in terms of surfboards? What are your advices?
    Thank you. Cheers from Portugal!

    • @SurfInsight

      Hi Filipe and thanks for that. Going to that length would work but keep your old board too if poss for the poor surf days. At 160 LBS that not too much of a radical change in length and as you say you picking up most of your waves and that volume for your weight is still high so that sounds like it will be a good move ...if the new board is good of course
