  • We had a Sleep Number bed when we lived on land. By far it was the best mattress we've ever had. Sadly, a bed like that was not possible on a boat like ours. Just one of the MANY compromises we've made to live on this boat. Before we moved aboard full-time in 2013 we had a custom foam mattress made (4" foam with 2" memory foam). It was great for about 5 years, then we added another 2" memory foam topper and that got us through another 3 years. The past few months we've gotten less than stellar sleep so a new mattress was in order. But this time we decided to do it ourselves, which was easy because we had the old mattress as a template and we reused the old covers.

I’m Jeni and he’s Rich. We’re really just a couple of average Joes. In a nutshell we met and married in our early 20s; I graduated from college in my late 20s; adopted two cats and a dog in the late 90s; sold a house and bought a new house in our mid 30s; then sold the new house and moved onto a sailboat in our early 40s. In between all that we had a bunch of fun like camping, scuba diving, watching hockey games (Go Red Wings!), concerts, traveling, spear fishing, restoring a 1963 Chevy II Nova; spending time with family and friends. A few years ago we decided to lay off all the fun-having to fix up this old boat. We figure if we put our noses to the grindstone for a few years, we’ll be able to travel for a few years and do all the fun things we’ve missed.

We're just getting ready to replace the double berth in our forward stateroom. We had a custom latex mattress made 20 years ago so it's time to replace. That company is no longer in business, so we'd like to go the same route you did - buying king mattresses and cutting and covering them. You used two 3" mattresses and glued together. I couldn't understand what the name of the first kind of latex was, sounded like palalite? The second was Dunlop firm. Also, which brand & type of spray adhesive did you use? Thanks for a great video.

Hi Sue - The top is Talalay latex. The adhesive we used was Super 77 by 3M.

    2 questions
    1) What tool did you use to cut the latex? Most examples I have seen used an electric carving knife.
    2) What was crumbling, the latex or the old foam?
    Thanks!

Hi Bob - We used a foam cutter we bought from Sailrite. It's like a jigsaw but for foam. And it was the latex that was crumbling everywhere. We've cut other foam with the same cutter and it leaves a crumbly mess too, but not as bad as the latex.
