Kotaku says... sheesh lol They say the games been in development for "several" years, yet SoD 3 was only announced in 2020. I tend to treat kotaku's posts like tabloid newspapers some truths hidden among a whole lot of jabaiting and muck stirring, with comment moderation with most left in moderation never to see the light of day and largely only those not questioning the post being shown.
And according to the studio head when the game was announced they were in pre-production and were still focusing efforts on expanding the development team (thanks to a massive budget increase from microsoft) while continuing support for SoD2.
The game if it's even in a proper development stage now could only have been in development for maybe a year, year and a half tops.
How about the most qualified people get hired and promoted and their identity plays 0 role in those decisions?
What a novel idea! It's almost like that would mean the people who deserve the job gets hired! This is brilliant!
FR tho, why the hell have we begun to care about how many racial or gender minorities sit behind our desks? Life isn't about participation awards. A game will be good when the people making it are those highest qualified. Hire people who fit with your mission, and turn down those that don't. It's really not that hard.

Idk man. The "white cishet man" studio somehow made the best zombie surival game I have ever played (yes, I prefer this to L4D). But the more diverse studio screwed up the game a lot.
I bet some of the newly hired diverse "talents" must have touched the follower's AI because they are hot garbage now.
Having big companies, in which high executives are worried about money, timelines and reputation, the game itself is not a priority.
This model is unsustainable, especially on sequels. There is a point to where you can’t think that a bigger game equals better. Sometimes simple mechanics, with added QoL improvements and new maps gets the job done. The scope of AAA games becomes so huge and incredible expensive with such a huge risk that these leadership problems and production hells are almost unavoidable due to the sheer amount of people trying to impose an idea.
Give these people space and they will demand more. This isn't about making the game better its about destroying what they built. Do not comply.

I know right? Shocker: not every idea is a good one, and nobody is entitled to have their idea become reality. Undead Labs has made every update uncontroversially good, where the game is ALWAYS better off post-update. I don't care WHOSE ideas they were, they were GOOD ideas. Promote good ideas, and put down bad ones. Keep your game good, no matter whose feelings get hurt. Again, nobody is entitled to having their opinion/idea be heard.

Probably an even larger percentage would be if there weren’t discriminatory hiring practices and corporate cultures where it is automatically assumed you’re somehow less skilled at the job you’ve dedicated a significant amount of your life to learning in order to get a employed in that field because you occasionally wear a dress. Ok, so the transvestites may indeed be just as skilled at the technical aspects of game design. But employers have to consider other things when hiring, such as the probability that a man who chooses to draw so much attention to himself might be mentally unstable. And especially if the man believes he *is* a woman, employers have every right to add that to their considerations when hiring.

Make a good game. Promote the ideas that are best for the game, and turn down the other ideas. Hire people who share your mission, or your end goal; turn down those who don't. Don't be afraid to be selective. Selection is what refines a game, gives it a proper and strong trajectory. Don't miss out on those benefits by catering to everyone who demands they be hired, or demands their idea be implemented. When people talk about the achievements of Undead Labs, only the few will talk about the percentages of minorities (racial or sexual) that you've artificially incorporated; but most people will talk about what games you've made, and how amazing they are. Promote that legacy, not the weak, woke, political kind. That's how you get forgotten.

Am I the only one that felt sick to my stomach watching this and it had nothing to do with the game. I love the "Decay" games but the newest title is now the farthest thing from my mind. To start, how much longer will it be acceptable for adults to complain about bullying because they aren't having a blast at work and not every one of their coworkers treats them the way they would please?

Given State of Decay's obsession with representing minorities in a positive/neutral way, it was kind of shocking to hear that they have an internal diversity problem.
This is a game that treats women as perfect equals to men. This game with people with wildly varying accents in it. I mean, this is a series with only 3 explicitly romantic relationships depicted in it and they are ALL homosexual. It's got religious enthusiasts and blatant atheists. And it's a game that thrives on the concept of, "Together, we are stronger!". They've had news articles posted on the SoD2 main menu representing people of color working internally. The only demographic SoD hasn't tried to represent is trans people, and that's probably more because of technical limitations than a lack of desire.
So when I heard there were rampant problems of various prejudices, I was like, "wtf"

I'm sure the women there were hired entirely based on their merit! Their insight, and experience put everyone in the room to shame. So the team ignored them. First thing to recognize entering the gaming industry is that games take time. Like lots of time. All these gaming companies are trying to fast-forward a 5-6-year game and crunch it down in 2-3 years. You can't do that.

I had faced several micro aggression and harsher treatment for identical issues. I had reported it after the 4-5 time it happened.

It’s first matter what project your working on, you can’t rush a project; if you try to rush things mistakes and mishaps will happen. Also rushing a game or a demo release can be worst than delaying a game, then they would have to back track and fix what needs to be fix. It also put the strain the the people making and developing the game to have low morale to.
Currently, men, especially straight white men are the most discriminated against so I don't care about this as long as the game comes out well made. If men are more talented, hire them.

I have actually worked in very diverse situations.. However Don't let the term diverse fool you. I am a conservative, But I never ever let that get out because I would have been railroaded out and felt very isolated. That is not a diverse situation. I just grinned and nodded as everyone talked about politics through out the work place. When they say Diverse, they mean Race, Sex, religion, ethnicity sexual orientation of same alignment.

Who cares what the race and gender of the developer is as long as they're developing great games?! Quota hiring is racist, sexist, and generally discriminatory in the worst ways! Hire based on talent, potential, and experience.... not race and gender ffs. Do you want to develop a great game with great marketability and profit margin, or just make sure you've got all the colors of the rainbow employed to produce a series-killing piece of chit game?

To be honest, Sunny, this is just a handful of people. There is no documentation or verification of any of this. No employee evaluations, no counselings, no EEO filings, no secret recordings by those alleging mistreatment and bad leadership. What we have are some people complaining without any response by the company or any independent verification. Most are also FORMER employees. Who knows how they left? Were they fired for incompetence? For breaking policies? Something to consider.

Another main reason that SoD3 is still in pre production is that they don’t know if they want an MMO or single player with multiplayer.
They’ve said very firmly it will be a SP game because they know where their core fanbase is. the issue for what mode of gameplay is to what degree multiplayer will be involved.

Well, the "terrible habits of the last few years" have resulted in one of the best zombies games ever made; this studio doesn't miss. Every single update is uncontroversially a good addition to the game, complete, well-rounded. Undead Labs has created a game that's constantly up to date, always adding more content, and always thinking about how to make their game better. Why? They're focusing on how their employees can make the game better; they're pushing their teams to produce something extraordinary. Not because they're counting how many racial minorities they can fit behind a desk to appease the public. I'm all for non-discriminatory hiring. But no company should ever hire SPECIFICALLY to cater to minorities. It may be the case that, for whatever reason, the ideas that have made it to the game have come predominately from men. Players don't know, we don't see that happening. All that we see is an incredibly good game become remarkably better and better over time, and results are something you just can't argue with. Who cares who came up with the idea? Who cares about the color of someone's skin, or their gender? What matters is that Undead Labs is making a fantastic game, which they have. And if what they've done until now is successful, then I don't think they should change a thing. I hope State of Decay 3 can come to be exactly what the producers envision. And more than anything, I hope the creative process doesn't get weighed down or inhibited by the studio being forced to count people by their skin, or give more say to certain demographics of employees to make up for how those employees feel.

I mean, not even men deserved to be treated like that, right? Ofc we don't really know if they (male employees) reject their ideas based on their gender. And like you said, it could be another case of junior-senior problem like in most companies.
Either way, I can't really blame the female and enby employees for mistakenly assume it was sexist since the game industry itself is still very sexist in general. From the surface level, I think it's even more likely they rejected the idea because they're sexist based on that outlook of the game industry. But unfortunately the article itself lack details, i'm saying it's best to stay neutral by not blaming the victim and the suspect.

Yap all you want about how your ideas were ignored; what you can't argue with is that Undead Labs has already made a masterpiece of a game, with virtually zero controversial or bad updates. Bottom line is, the way they've run the studio so far has had a massively positive impact on the resulting game. Who gives a shit how many black, or gay, or female people work for your company, or if they feel their voice is heard? What matters is that you make a good game, which Undead Labs has done. Keep putting your efforts into the game, and your player base isn't gonna go anywhere; we're staying right here.

Undead labs doesn't have a big team
State of decay 1 in my opinion is the best open world zombie survival game ever made. I play this game to death every single day and with mods the experience gets much better. BUT....we're talking about a company that literally made a state of decay 1, released "updates", abandon state of decay 1, introduced state of decay: year one survival edition as a "remastered", removed the original state of decay 1 from steam so nobody could ever buy it again and used the excuse of "YOSE version is much more refined and stable" and trashed it out. State of decay 1 and state of decay: YOSE are not stable when it comes to performance. Both versions are rigged 100% with bugs, glitches, huge amount of exaggerated stutter and extreme lag, even if you have a beast gaming pc/laptop. The game chugs a lot trying to run, especially the driving moments where the game out of nowhere slows down but at the same time it's going normal speed which is something I've never seen in any game so far. They promised to everyone, and i literally mean everyone, that they were working on a coop/multiplayer mode for the original game and guess what ? They never released it and stayed complete silent so everyone would just forget about their lies. And then what did Undead Labs do next ? They trashed out State of Decay: YOSE, stopped proving updates and left it to rot. They even removed the original State of Decay from their website and pretended that game never existed. All you find there is State of Decay 2 and State of Decay 3. Then they released State of Decay 2 with the same bugs, glitches, constant pop ins and outs, some stutter and lag. Some people might use the excuse that they don't charge for DLC ( yes, they do if you wanna get the full game ) and now ? State of Decay 3 was announced.
Hey, I love State of Decay 1 ( yes, 1, not the yose version which is more broken than the original game ) but i cannot pretend not to see what's in front of me. A company that lies to their consumers, make false promises and then go silent so everyone can get collective Alzheimer. I still play the original game cause It's the best despite the 95% of the problems it has.

This is a culture in this channel not intentionally. its just where people like this tend to group up. just remember that these concerns are valid and that you are not the focal point of these issues. Discrimination happens in the workplace a lot. and it is very easy for white men to ignore it and surround themselves in an echo chamber of like minded "bros". Being inclusive isn't bad. being a racist/ sexist screaming baby who refuses to indulge in something they cant fathom to not only see themselves in is what kills media.

Here's my biggest problem. Hopefully you understand. Back in the day, Sexual Harassment claims, sexism and racism held more weight because there was a universal understanding/criteria. But I have to admit, today it's muddier. Today, you could disagree with someone regardless of race/gender and they'll call you racist/sexist. So, with that being said, it's hard to tell if some people are upset/confused that they didn't get the promotion, or if their idea didn't stick. It's also hard to tell if the studio head is actually racist/sexist. There are people out there that will claim sexism/racism when such instances occur because they know that there's a flagship waiting to back them up. so they call wolf. There are also instances where it's undoubtfully true. There are some people that genuinely think they didn't get what they wanted because of their race/gender when it reality it has nothing to do with it. All I'm saying is the lines are blurred now.
Whether or not employees want to moan and groan about their ideas not being heard or whatever, here's what you cannot dispute: State of Decay 2, just like the original, is a phenomenal and polished game. Every update has made the game better, and every addition of content is well-thought-out, and well-executed. What does this mean? The ideas that have made it into the game are GOOD ideas. That's it. Some people at the company are saying that they feel that all these ideas came from white men only. Okay? And? THEY'RE GOOD IDEAS. Nobody has a right for their ideas to be good ideas; nobody is entitled to be listened to. Whether Undead Labs got their ideas from men, or from women, or from interpreting clouds, or from turtles crapping on a piece of paper, what can definitively be said is that they have good ideas. Therefore, nothing is broken, and therefore, nothing needs fixing. If you just want to get your ideas from anybody, any average person, then you're gonna get average ideas. Make selections based on skill, and talent, and coalignment of mission; not from color of skin, sex, or sexual orientation.
