Surprised you didn't mention Mob Psycho. Nice list though.
I watched some of Mob Psycho, I can appreciate it but it's not really my thing.
No it did.
MRCLT1994 mob and jojo
+Keyboard Jesus It literally just began to explore the ideas it presented, though. The series isn't over.
+AnimeEveryday Mob Psycho did start off a bit slow (unlike One Punch Man which just threw you into it), but it was very surprisingly good. The fight scenes, especially in the last arc of the season, were absolutely fantastic as well. You really should give it another try.
You are definitely my favourite anime youtuber. All of your videos are so well put together and insightful that it's hard to choose whether I'd watch these or anime itself! I hope 2017 goes well for you and you never stop making these videos.
Thank you so much! Expect lots more videos over 2017 :)
Great video, love the amount of work you put into the editing to make it comfy.
Thanks! :)
Nice list, glad you gave Flip Flappers attention
Thanks :) Flip Flappers deserves it!
Thoughts on the latest episode? I thought the TV format hurt it since it felt a bit rushed. Really hope it nails the finale.
1. Jojo DiU.
2. Shouwa Genroku.
3. Gundam Thunderbolt.
just watched these 3 but i will be giving a shot to the ones on your list.
you'll love Kuromukuro

I agree 100% what you said about Rakugo! It's pleasant to hear "bigger" anitubers talking about rakugo and promoting it. Nice list man ;)

Just a random RUclips Account
I see nothing wrong.
Good taste.
damn man your back with a vengeance! keep it up
Just realised I haven't seen a single 2016 show yet... been watching older ones for the whole year, so this video surely helps me.
great video! the amount of work you put into these is always very impressive, aha. i've been trying to get back into watching more anime lately so i'll definitely be checking all these out. thanks for sharing
this has been my first year of seasonal anime viewing and its been pretty great
I am curious what editing program do you use for your videos ? It always looks so smooth and professional.
hey, quality video as always. I was wondering on your stance on mob psycho, one of my favourites this year, with its fantastic animation, and characters.
Very good list. I'm especially happy about 91 days, amanchu and shouwa genroku. :)
@animeveryday
if you are looking for a new anime to watch .
how do you do that ?
do you watch anime recommandations of other people or is there a specific method that you follow?
It is pretty funny to me that the only anime on here I haven't seen is number 1 haha. Also what is the name of the BGM I would be down to put that on my chill playlist. See you in the next video and I hope you have a good holiday season man :)
My man Holden :) All the tracks are from Chillhop Record's winter collection: chillhop.bandcamp.com/album/chillhop-essentials-winter-2016
Hope you have a good one too man!
AnimeEveryday Thank you for the early Christmas Present my dude ^_~
I loved 91 Days (It's definitely my style of anime) and completely forgot about Konosuba until you mentioned it. I watched Yuri on Ice, going into it with skepticism but enjoyed the style and story. Going to give some of yours a watch as well -3gatsu, DJ and Shouwa are definitely on my list to watch. I'm kind of craving something with a similar style and feel to Ergo Proxy to come out this year - I can only hope. I don't remember most of what I watched last year (in terms of new anime to be specific) aside from those two.
I only watched Kimi no Na Wa and Ajin season 2 this year, in terms of anime released exclusively this year. Other than that, I spent time on older stuff including: Deadman Wonderland, Shiki, Serial Experiments Lain, Code Geass, Log Horizon, Haruhi Suzumiya, Akira, Jin-Roh, and Darker than Black. Wow, I really need to get more on my checklist for 2017.
I guess by now I should finally watch Shouwa Genroku ^^
Great Video btw.
You definitely should!
Thanks :)
Rakugo is a really great series, when you're able to get into it.
For me it's the better of the year, the world would be a better place with more anime like that.
Next season around the corner, and while you are at it watch Fune wo Amu also.
It's getting a second season in the winter so you need to finish it quick to catch up!
Sylenca watch it
Thoughts on fune wo amu? It wasn't on par with shawa genroku but did give a similar feeling and I felt it did a pretty decent job of character exploration and visual metaphor. Also I would probably give Mob Psycho 100 and Yuri on Ice a place on my list but overall I pretty much agee completely. Shawa Genroku fit a special spot with me and I loved everything about it. Can't wait for the second season. Also love your thoughts on each show and that you give a more personal reason on why you liked each show.
Kinda surprised you didn't mention Fune wo Amu. The same woman (Kumota Haruko) who created Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, is responsible for the characther designs for FwA. FwA is not as great as SGRS, but it delivers the same aspect, both talk about an industry that may seem boring on paper but it's very well flashed when you watch it. Hope you give it a watch!
Great video. I will check out Shouwa
(A particular anime You Tuber who shall not be named said Shouwa Rakugo was a slice-of-life) I have not seen everything this year but all I can say it was a very quiet year. People don't really seem to be talking about this year so much. This year was just "OK" for me.
You seem to really like Mecha anime, do you have a suggestions for some good Mecha series to watch? :)
I don't think I have a top 10, but I did really like
Concrete Revolutio, Raguko, 91 Days, Diamond if Unbreakable and Ushio to Tora. Though 2 of them are titles that started last year
Fune wo Amu? Did you watch it? It's my favorite anime this year.
Yeah 2016 was great anime year for me
10/10 Diamond is Unbreakable
9/10 MSG Thunderbolt; Rakugo; Mob Psycho 100; Tanaka-kun, Your Name, Haikyu!! 3rd
8/10 Yuri!!! On ICE, ERASED; ReLIFE, My Hero Academia, Keijo!!!!!!!!, Flip Flappers; Gi(a)rlish Number, Drifters; First Love Monster ,Planetarian
+ really enjoying Poco's Udon World (didn't finish it yet) & March comes in like a lion
10/10's - None
9/10's - Saiki Kusuo
8/10s- Rakugo, Durarara x2, Re:Zero, Erased, Haikyuu 3rd Season, ReLife, Flying Witch, (Tanaka-Kun, and Shokugeki S2 - these are both candidates to drop to 7s)
Shouwa Genroku is definitely my favourite this year. I am not completely new to rakugo itself, but I never thought an anime of it would be so exciting to watch.
My other favourites are Euphonium 2, Mob Psycho and Natsume Yuujinchou. ARIA The Avvenire was also a fantastic one to watch, right after water was discovered on Mars.
_____ this show had such a profound affect on me. it was such a surprise, what it was able to do in just 13 episodes blew me away.
Suprised no one has mentioned Space Patrol Luluco, easily one of my favourites from 2016, really reccommend it, it's Trigger at its finest and Hiroyuki Imaishi's direction is just amazing, really short but really awesome and fun as hell, if you missed it go watch it, it won't take more than 2 hours of your time.
I watched all the shows in your list except showa , the board player one and mafia one
I loved 2016 and thanks for the video , a good watch
I started watching this video yesterday and 2 mins, 10 seconds in I saw a suggestion I liked the sound of - 3-gatsu no Lion, and i'm loving it. Can't wait to un-pause this video and watch the other suggestions! lol. Going to finish the anime first though.
I'm so happy that Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou is in the list, this anime was so great, what a shame that it went unnoticed.
Got to pimp it out as much as possible, such a hidden gem!
You've like, perfectly pinned down the reason why gangster anime isn't as widespread. Kudos!
Great to see Kuromukuro mentioned. Loved that show.
The moment DJ Agetaro popped up here, I knew it was something I had to watch. Love the simple art design, and hopefully I get as much from it narratively
Enjoy it! It's a treat
Thank you, and Thanks for the recommendations
Are you watching anything this winter season? I'd like som recommendations because I am not.
I am not too sad/mad about not seeing Yuri on Ice on here, since it's not an anime but a lifetime commitment. It's clearly No. 1 in everything, let's be real. It's pure perfection and it makes me so happy *-*
Right now my AotY is Swagamoto, followed by Udon no LotsOfKs, MP100, Amanchu and Tonkatsu. But I expect all those to soon be toppled by Shouwa and Flip Flappers once I watch them. Most other stuff I watched I found to be at best just alright, but considering the recent track record of modern anime, I'd say my list is better than I expected.
Showa definitely tops all the shows this year, once you get past the long first episode. Has some of the best directing, voice work, and music
Glad to see Amanchu getting some love.
:)
Kuromukuro is an underappreciated anime. I went in expecting a shallow highschoolXmech series, but it was surprisingly deep, and the cast is really likeable. The protagonist team also has a surprisingly grounded relationship given their circumstances...
and it has mechs.
Love the background music
:)
So glad to see Shouwa Genroku at #1. Truly a very unique show that was full of surprises, smooth flashbacks, and engaging characters that were complemented from the expressive medium of rakugo.
You're going the be the first original host of "Inside the Anime Studio". :D
hmm what did you think of erased?
Could do a top ten of 2016 with none of these .. Oh the magic of anime...
While I enjoyed some shows this year, including Sound! Euphonium S2, Snow White with the Red Hair S2, 91 Days, Yuri on Ice, Flying Witch, Erased, Sweetness and Lightning, Mob Psycho 100, Flip Flappers, etc... I wouldn't really call any of them one of my favorites. But far and away I would say so about Rakugo Shinjuu. That series really surprised me with how much it grabbed me. I have not gotten far enough in March Comes in Like a Lion to rank it.
I felt this year, while not having too many series I would consider favorites, had a really nice variety from accessible, popcorn shows to those with a more niche audience.
The problem of mediocre art - not just anime, - is lack of purpose. Art is supposed to convey an idea, a story with a point. Most of the modern anime doesn't have a point. Most don't even bother with recognizable visuals - same designs, same colours, same bs.
Ислам Хаупшев Same fucking gradient used on all the backgrounds. Seriously, what's with this washed up shit. At least shows like Mob Psycho and others have experimented with trippy colors
jmiquelmb ikr. And when that shit shows up in a GHOST IN THE SHELL OVA ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Yeah, good old anime like Project A-ko clearly had an idea to convey...
NykowPalalum I never said that old shows are better or much different just because they're older, if that's what you're implying.
Ислам Хаупшев Who fed you these lies? What is the 'purpose' of the Mona Lisa? What is the 'purpose', of a Jackson Pollock? There is no such thing as 'mediocore' art, and art does not need a 'purpose'. "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder", have you ever heard this quote before? What is art to some, isn't to others and that's fine. If you didn't like this season, that's fine. However, plaese refrain from making blanket statements on subjects that are completely subjective.
I thought this was a good year for anime. I stuck with all the shows I watched until the end. Amanchu, Flip Flappers, Flying Witch, Gi@rlish Number, Kuma Miko, etc. Now I have a few more to watch thanks to this vid.
man I'm gonna miss flip flappers and flying witch
cant wait for thunderbolt part 2 though!
Agreed :)
Didn't watched the video, but I saw Rakugo on the cover so I agree with whatever you say.
Happy Christimas.
I'm so glad I started Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu! It really is a splendid anime, I did not expect a 40 minute pilot episode but that's okay, because the rest was beautiful! Stunning visuals, I love the soundtrack (It's jazzy and reminds me of Durarara) and I love the character's personalities: especially Yakumo and Sukeroku! I was so surprised that the anime decided to actually exploit the comedic storytelling style of Rakugo as well within the anime, on first glance it seems as though they'll just gloss over their performances but as the story unfolds the viewer gets to watch all the skits happen and a lot of their skits are hilarious in their own right. . .Seriously, if you aspire to learn more about Japanese comedy and culture I do suggest you watch this. I'm only 5 episodes in but that's enough to say I'm thoroughly enjoying it!
Have you seen the Kara no Kyoukai movie series?
Rakugo and Lupin III were by far and away my favorites.
I came back to anime this year after a 2 year hiatus so I probably have a few things to catch up on. This is a great list you have, whilst there are a few I've seen and enjoyed there are also a number I haven't seen but will now seek out to watch.
Some of my fav from this year include:
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Mob Psycho 100
Yuri!!! On Ice
91 Days
Haikyuu!!
Boku no Hero Academia
Slightly above average. I only liked Erased that came out of the abysmal winter season. Nothing caught my eye for spring and summer, I watched a few older series that I had sitting on my shelf and one I borrowed which were meh to decent but fall has had some real gems for me that I'll love for a long time to come.
I'm kinda suprized that there was no mention of Yuri on Ice.
Rakugo Shinju is indeed miles away from all of its competition last year. Even S2 right now is killing it. Such a great show.
What is the streaming service in the bottom left corner at 0:30?
No, Daisuki is in the top right. I'm wondering what the one in the bottom left is.
AnimeLab, a service available only in Australia and New Zealand.
Thank you for the answer.
that background music though man
Mob Psycho, Rakugo and Hibike Euphonium are my favs of the year
Have you seen The Great Passage?
I'd like to know your thoughts on Yuri On Ice
well this was the golden year of anime for me, a really good year indead! Here's my list:
1. Mob Psycho 100
2. D.Gray-Man Hallow
3. Re:Zero
4. Kizumonogatari 1 and Koyomimonogatari (yet to see the second Kizu movie, including it as 1 count, due to them being in the same storyline)
5. Macross Delta
6. Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans +Thunderbolt (I'm including the 2 of them as 1 count, because a lot of MSG IBO had aired in 2015 and will air in 2017! And they are related by name but not story, so yeah)
7. Ushio To Tora Season 2
8. Jojo Part 4
9. Rakugo
10. Ajin (both seasons)
thanks for the video!
I really liked original D.Gray Man but dropped Hallow after about 3 episodes because it was like 80% exposition. Does it get better later on? Does it end the story or it has typical "read manga" ending?
Felik18 I don't consider an anime using exposition as a flaw, heck 80% I don't notice it's happening! Or remember the meaning of the name!
well what really put it so high for me was Kanda's arc, and enough to make it my most favourite anime, I can't say whether or not the exposition continues though, because I hardly ever notice it as a flaw!
Felik18 oh and in the way of the ending....
I wouldn't call it a read the manga ending, but it also doesn't have a proper ending, the ending was a typical shonen seasonal ending, the characters defeat an enemy and it gets a slight and nice wrap up!
Mine would be nearly the exact same except replacing flying witch, sangatsu lion, and thunderbolt, with luluco, my hero academia, and mob psycho 100. I feel every year there are good anime out, you just gotta find them. If I were to compare my lists, I'd say they'd be pretty equal, last years being(in no order), food wars, opm, sound! euphonium, death parade, kekkai sensen, yuri kuma arashi, gakkou gurashi, osomatsu-san, rolling girls, and concrete revolutio.
Surprised kuma miko got a mention
I couldn't even make a top 10 anime, maybe 7 or 6 at most. So many shows just don't deserve to be recommended. Although part of the reason for not having enough shows for a top 10 is because I skipped several slice of lfe shows because I didn't feel in the mood for them, like Amanchu or Flying Witch, but I'll check them out later. It seems that this was a great year for Slice of Life anime.
could you do a video of bringing out the best qualities of mediocre shows. (what sao did right?)
There's no point SAO is a great show, and maybe one of the most underrated anime of all time. Anyone trying to say differently is purpose hating for the sake of hating.
JimmyKudo3000 I hope that's sarcasm
GusM nah. its not. its genuniely one of the most irrationally hated series of all time. I can go into great detail about it. but theres really no point.
I'm just seeing this video now...... where the FUCK is keijo........
The anime that I really watch after reading all the summaries during that time is : Genroku and I praise the anime a lot. I thought it would not be appeared in your list but I glad it took the 1st place. ")B
I've started watching anime since the start of spring 2014, but I must agree, 2016 is a good year
This year has been overloaded with 6-7/10s
I fall asleep watching flying witch
Rakugo Shinjuu was my favourite of last year with Re:Zero second
My top 10 of 2016:
1.Hai to Gensou no Grimgar
2.Flip Flappers
3.Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased)
4.Fune Wo Amu (The Great Passage)
5.Konosuba
6.Mob Psycho 100
7.Re:Zero
8.Bungou Stray Dogs
9.Keijo!!!
10.Dimension W
My favorite anime rivalries of 2016: Forneverworld vs Double4Anime.
my top is showa genroku rakugo shinju
hopefully the season two will top my anime for next year as well
My top 3-
1: Concrete Revolutio: The Last Song
2: Mob Psycho 100
3:Diamond is Unbreakable
In my opinion it surpassed it, but opinions differ. Though if you enjoyed the first half you'll be sure to enjoy the rest.
would Black Lagoon be considered a gangster anime?
first 2 seasons of 2017, ao no exorcist s2, konosuba s2, BloodBlocade s2, boku no hero academia s2, attack on titan s2,. 2017 gonna be so fuckin good!
Can I jump in to gundam thunderbolt without watching anything from the universal century timeline?
Yup :)
AnimeEveryday thanks will check out soon!!
It would help to have some background, though. Thunderbolt is an anime which showcases a lot of action and awesome mechs, but it doesn't really explore the motivations of the factions, or the reason for the war in the first place, so a little history is recommended. A quick peek at the synopsis of Gundam 0079 will do the trick.
Though it is very good if you just want some mech-on-mech action.
I haven't really watched too many anime this year, unfortunately.
Where is Mayoiga?
LOL troll Comment?
Cool list, mine is:
5 - Erased
4 - Mob Psycho 100
3 - 91 Days
2 - Boku no Hero
1 - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
