The show's use of psychedelic colors and paint on glass animations is hardly a common thing. Or are you saying that a all powerful psychic that works under a con-artist is a common story. The over the top fighting sequences did have a point. It was to show how overwhelming Mob's power could be. Despite that we have seen that he can be defeated if taken by surprise unlike in OPM.

Technically its a 24 episode anime that releases its episodes into 5, 5 minute segments throughout the week. But ya its not getting recognized because of this.

The biggest hindrances to Saiki were definitely the episodes being 5 min shorts, the characters never evolving or developing, and the jokes becoming fairly repetitive as the series went on.

I disagree, it was certainly good and I would love to have it on my shelf but Mob Psycho 100 is my pick of the year. There aren't many series I feel compelled to watch more than once a year and I've already watched MP100 three times since it aired.

Yuri!!! on Ice is my personal favorite anime of 2016. Aside from Arkada's recommendations, I also recommend Ajin, Orange, Grimgar, Bungo Stray Dogs & Kabaneri

Second this one. Bungo Stray Dogs is very very good. I am saying this as someone that hated the protagonist of the series. Fuking righteous underdog. The other characters and everything else raises it so don't drop it at the first episode.

91 Days is so good! For the dub, I thought it was really solid though Fango doesn't sound quite as insane in it. Also, it takes place in the US, not Europe. Also, the more people that watch Flip Flappers the better. Closet thing we'll ever get to another FLCL.
Nikos Gavra I'm currently anticipating AoT Season 2, Little Witch Academia, Konosuba Season 2, and I am watching Blue Exorcist Season 1 for the first time in order to prepare for the release of the show's 2nd Season. Also, I haven't watched Season 2 of Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion since the internet has spoiled most of it for me, but I'll watch it ASAP so that I can watch the 3rd Season.

kimi no na wa is the best anime movie I've watch so far. Makoto Shinkai usually have a terrible and unsatisfying ending for his movie. However, kimi no na wa is different. The story is solid and the ending is so satisfying. not to mention that the OST is very good. Go watch it if you haven't.

+PandorazChaos Yuri on Ice is a sports anime that just so happens to have a romantic subplot involving the two main characters. Yuri is a much more relatable main character as a 23 year old than the typical 16 year old protagonists of most sports anime and is also one of my favourite unreliable narrators (and those are my favourite sort of narrators). +Brian Antoine Because it's on its third season and people generally skip sequels on these lists since if you haven't watched the first season you're definitely not going to watch the third one. People should definitely watch it though, it's probably my favourite sports anime and should be everyone else's as well.
Rakugo shinju is easily one of the most underrated animes out there. I'm glad he was able to see that even tho he didn't personally like it. This is why I love his reviews.

I finally see grimgar in the comments. I hate slow paced shows but that show was AMAZING! I didn't watch it that season because I was distracted by re;zero but I would place it on my favorites list.
I didn't watch many anime this year but I did watch Grimgar. I would personally place it above Erased if only slightly. Erase definitely has a bit of an identity crisis near its end whereas Grimgar seems both very aware of what it wants to be but also what it might hide itself as. I appreciate it more because I've recently gotten into D&D and Grimgar is very much about _living_ in a D&D world with inexplicable combat mechanics and everything. Talking a lot a bout Grimgar because I consider it somewhat overlooked. You wanna hear about Erased. Erased is an utterly delight early on. At its highest it's definitely better than Grimgar. It's such a curious experience to watch that I almost don't recommend it due to its quality but due to the experience it makes you go through. That said, it definitely has decent quality. [edited because I accidentally several words]
Tim van der Beek First 3 are OK(Konosuba is fucking great) though Kabanari, Kiznaiver, and Grimgar as most memorable is questionable but at that point I'm sure it's just personal preference.
It's always nice to watch this short and summarized videos, it really helps me to find something new. The only thing I'd like to mention is that sometimes is hard to track the names when translated or using abbreviations that I'm not aware of. You can always use parenthesis to put the original name. (I understand that ppl do it to avoid butchering names but again, it can be written on the screen)

Al Frank I'm already 5 episodes in and I'm loving it. Cowboy Bebop is a very exciting show and I'm glad I chose to check it out at last. I'm annoyed at myself for being so hesitant to try it out since it's a bit old. Thanks for the indirect motivation!

AStrawberryFruitBat Sound Euphonium was so good I think I might like it so much that it's even better than anything else I've watched except for Kagerou Daze because their story is just too good. It was so deep and perfectly written, directed so perfectly it lets you completely understand the characters by yourself without needing to tell you what to think, and so realistic you can feel the emotions of the characters in you. Honestly, I'm almopst shocked at how well made this anime is, it's so amazing that it's also animated by the absolute queen of animation studios Kyoto animations. I think it feels really mature, right? It never gets over dramatic or unrealistic, and the directory makes it like a mystery, letting you try to read the situation and understand what everybody feels like you were there with them.
Well the first season on Euphonium was in last years top 10 like he said so people who watched that and ended up watching the first season will have undoubtedly watched the second season anyway. As for the others I'm pretty sure he explained quite well why they were only honorable mentions. Re;Zero is popular enough without his recommendation and JoJo is a second season as well as probably popular enough too.

One detail worth mentioning is that Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) has made $288,800,000 world wide thus far, making it second highest grossing anime of all time, lacking only about $200,000 to Spirited Away (which has been sitting on number one spot for 15 years).
Yuri on Ice comes on top for me just for the fact that it has such an international appeal that it became a show even my sister (who has left her anime days behind) greatly enjoyed and gave us something we could watch together.

I'm still trying to cope with the fact that Yuri!!! on Ice is over. I started out the series thinking it was just going to be fun and light-hearted and comedic. OH DEAR GOD WAS I WRONG. No, there was no extremely heavy content, but it was not a comedy show. It has funny moments, but that's not what the show was meant to be. It's realistic in its content, from the relationships of all the characters, especially Viktor and Yuuri, to how the characters are built. It's heart-wrenching in the best ways possible and I couldn't be more glad to have picked it up.
My favorite of the year would have to be "My Hero Academia". I'm a big fan of the superhero genre as a whole and I personally believe it to fill the third slot of superhero anime that flip typical genre conventions on their heads alongside "One Punch Man" and "Tiger and Bunny". It's one of the few anime that I've actually bothered to keep up with the manga version because of how much I love it.

My personal anime list for the year: 1. Mob Psycho 100 (Poignant character scenes in a gag comedy action? Sign me up!) 2. JoJo: DiU (Incredible execution on one of the best parts manga-wise. DP really stepped up their game.) 3. Sakamoto Desu Ga? (Holy shit this show's funny.) 4. KonoSuba (A show that pulled off ripping apart boring harem fantasy LNs way better than anything I've seen, and it's a damn good comedy to boot) 5. Keijo! (I'm probably going to get flamed for this one, so hear me out. This series has the most over-the-top action of any anime I've seen all year. It's not a complete masterwork, but as far as dumb fanservice series go, this one just goes above and beyond in being as silly yet satisfying as possible.) Honourable mention to My Hero Academia. Great main protagonist, but 13 episodes is not enough to flesh out the story. I binged ahead and it gets better, but the anime from what is shown just doesn't do enough to win over most people. Also the side characters are incredibly... meh.
I could have done without the whole "2016 was a terrible year" talk in the beginning. That's been done to death, and the last thing I want to hear in an anime video. Come on!

2 anime tie for my favourite of 2016; Yuri!!! On Ice and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu but as for my BEST.... Rakugo definitely takes that spot. Amazing storytelling, beautiful animated and scored (musically) and extremely interesting and perfectly flawed main cast of characters. So happy we are in the midst of season 2 right now 😁
Feel sorry for you mate, Madman Entertainment brought Your Name to theaters for New Zealand and Australia. It was such an amazing film. Felt so lucky I got to watch it in theaters.
I bailed on Yuri on Ice and March Comes in like a Lion after their first episodes, because I expected them to be dramas and was put off by all of the broad comedy and shouting characters. Now that I've adjusted my expectations, I may have to give them another shot. My recommendations for the year are (in chronological order): Erased, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, Flying Witch, Sweetness & Lightning and Amanchu.
Give Yuri on Ice a chance until episode 4. The series is just starting and the comedy scenes for the first 3 episodes are for you to get attached and gettin to know the characters. As said by the creators there'll wouldn't be any emotion for the characters if they outright started with the ice skating competitions.
I dropped it after exactly four episodes. Too much fanservice, cheesyness and the characters are too offputting to me (I hated the Overly cute portrayal of the guys, everybody was acting like teenage scoolgirls).
Stray mind hmm that's a shame, it literally gets better after Ep 4. So much feels ugh..also the "fan service" starts to makes sense later on lol. And Victor is indeed a lovable total savage.
Concrete Revolutio is such a great and unique historical/superhero series about Japan post-WWII, with a ton of depth. Its second season was my anime of the year. Super underrated.
I feel like Joker Game could've been an honorable mention too. I feel like a lot of people missed out on that show. I was always intrigued by each episode and it really felt like a peak behind the curtains of a realistic spy syndicate

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is hands down the most memorable but underrated anime this year. It has amazing pacing, characters, and story, and with only 13 episodes, they fly by super fast. I wish more people would give it a try.
A little bit sad that Tanaka-kun is Always Listless didn't get a mention. It was my favourite anime of the year despite being a slice-of-life which I don't normally watch. I really hope you can do a video of it in the future!

But thats not being generic. Being generic means "having no particularly distinctive quality or application". The show's use of psychedelic colors and paint on glass animations is hardly a common thing. Or are you saying that a all powerful psychic that works under a con-artist is a common story. The over the top fighting sequences did have a point. It was to show how overwhelming Mob's power could be. Despite that we have seen that he can be defeated if taken by surprise unlike in OPM.

Saiki probably willed it to be this way. Sakamoto Desu Ga and Saiki were both better than Konosuba in terms of comedy IMO.
I like KonoSuba more but I have to admit, when it is about the comedy itself that Saiki is a bit better because of the variety and how unpredictable it can get
Technically its a 24 episode anime that releases its episodes into 5, 5 minute segments throughout the week. But ya its not getting recognized because of this.
WickedAnimeTroll Well aside from the fact I rarely laughed when watching Konosuba, I just thought Saiki was much better in almost every regard. The biggest hindrances to Saiki were definitely the episodes being 5 min shorts, the characters never evolving or developing, and the jokes becoming fairly repetitive as the series went on.

I disagree, it was certainly good and I would love to have it on my shelf but Mob Psycho 100 is my pick of the year. There aren't many series I feel compelled to watch more than once a year and I've already watched MP100 three times since it aired.

Second this one. Bungo Stray Dogs is very very good. I am saying this as someone that hated the protagonist of the series. Fuking righteous underdog. The other characters and everything else raises it so don't drop it at the first episode.

Nikos Gavra I'm currently anticipating AoT Season 2, Little Witch Academia, Konosuba Season 2, and I am watching Blue Exorcist Season 1 for the first time in order to prepare for the release of the show's 2nd Season. Also, I haven't watched Season 2 of Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion since the internet has spoiled most of it for me, but I'll watch it ASAP so that I can watch the 3rd Season.

Makoto Shinkai usually have a terrible and unsatisfying ending for his movie.
However, kimi no na wa is different. The story is solid and the ending is so satisfying.

+PandorazChaos Yuri on Ice is a sports anime that just so happens to have a romantic subplot involving the two main characters. Yuri is a much more relatable main character as a 23 year old than the typical 16 year old protagonists of most sports anime and is also one of my favourite unreliable narrators (and those are my favourite sort of narrators).
+Brian Antoine Because it's on its third season and people generally skip sequels on these lists since if you haven't watched the first season you're definitely not going to watch the third one. People should definitely watch it though, it's probably my favourite sports anime and should be everyone else's as well.
Rakugo shinju is easily one of the most underrated animes out there. I'm glad he was able to see that even tho he didn't personally like it. This is why I love his reviews.

I finally see grimgar in the comments. I hate slow paced shows but that show was AMAZING! I didn't watch it that season because I was distracted by re;zero but I would place it on my favorites list.
I didn't watch many anime this year but I did watch Grimgar. I would personally place it above Erased if only slightly. Erase definitely has a bit of an identity crisis near its end whereas Grimgar seems both very aware of what it wants to be but also what it might hide itself as.
I appreciate it more because I've recently gotten into D&D and Grimgar is very much about _living_ in a D&D world with inexplicable combat mechanics and everything.
Talking a lot a bout Grimgar because I consider it somewhat overlooked. You wanna hear about Erased. Erased is an utterly delight early on. At its highest it's definitely better than Grimgar. It's such a curious experience to watch that I almost don't recommend it due to its quality but due to the experience it makes you go through. That said, it definitely has decent quality.

Tim van der Beek First 3 are OK(Konosuba is fucking great) though Kabanari, Kiznaiver, and Grimgar as most memorable is questionable but at that point I'm sure it's just personal preference.

The only thing I'd like to mention is that sometimes is hard to track the names when translated or using abbreviations that I'm not aware of. You can always use parenthesis to put the original name. Sound Euphonium was so good I think I might like it so much that it's even better than anything else I've watched except for Kagerou Daze because their story is just too good. It was so deep and perfectly written, directed so perfectly it lets you completely understand the characters by yourself without needing to tell you what to think, and so realistic you can feel the emotions of the characters in you. Honestly, I'm almopst shocked at how well made this anime is, it's so amazing that it's also animated by the absolute queen of animation studios Kyoto animations. I think it feels really mature, right? It never gets over dramatic or unrealistic, and the directory makes it like a mystery, letting you try to read the situation and understand what everybody feels like you were there with them.
Well the first season on Euphonium was in last years top 10 like he said so people who watched that and ended up watching the first season will have undoubtedly watched the second season anyway. As for the others I'm pretty sure he explained quite well why they were only honorable mentions. Re;Zero is popular enough without his recommendation and JoJo is a second season as well as probably popular enough too.

You know what would be great for an end/beginning-of-the-year tradition from this channel? And, since you seem more in the mood for making lists more recently. I'd love to see a "Frosty List" from the year. Either ranking, or detailing the animes that got your signature Frosty rating for the year. This would also be a place where you could talk about your changes to ratings, either in Animes that you didn't give a frosty rating to but now feel deserve it, or Frosties that may have been overrated at the time.

One detail worth mentioning is that Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) has made $288,800,000 world wide thus far, making it second highest grossing anime of all time, lacking only about $200,000 to Spirited Away (which has been sitting on number one spot for 15 years).
Yuri on Ice comes on top for me just for the fact that it has such an international appeal that it became a show even my sister (who has left her anime days behind) greatly enjoyed and gave us something we could watch together.
If flip flappers is not on this list, I will slit my wrists and die.

I hope you'll still do a review on Yuri!!! on Ice, I'm glad to see you've watched it. It kinda fucking wrecked me with that ending cuz now every time I hear that song I start crying but it's a good kind of wrecked.
I'm still trying to cope with the fact that Yuri!!! on Ice is over. I started out the series thinking it was just going to be fun and light-hearted and comedic. OH DEAR GOD WAS I WRONG. No, there was no extremely heavy content, but it was not a comedy show. It has funny moments, but that's not what the show was meant to be. It's realistic in its content, from the relationships of all the characters, especially Viktor and Yuuri, to how the characters are built. It's heart-wrenching in the best ways possible and I couldn't be more glad to have picked it up.
My favorite of the year would have to be "My Hero Academia". I'm a big fan of the superhero genre as a whole and I personally believe it to fill the third slot of superhero anime that flip typical genre conventions on their heads alongside "One Punch Man" and "Tiger and Bunny". It's one of the few anime that I've actually bothered to keep up with the manga version because of how much I love it.

I've been watching your videos for the past 2 years (this is the first comment i post) and I greatly appreciate your reviews. in regards to this video, I'm so happy I watched it since I had already seen all the anime on your list except "erased" and didn't even hear about it. I can gladly say I freakin loved it so much! keep up the videos you do an awesome job and I'm glad you gave us a warning on the review for erased.
God I had been debating with mysel whether or not I wanted Arkada to do a full review of Yuri!!! on Ice, because I was afraid he would pick apart and I don't think I would have handled that very well since the show, with it's diverse cast, brilliant music and main relationship has gotten very special to me, but thank GOD that is not the case, and now I want a full review to hear his every thought about it.
I'm hoping next year has more romance shows

Think of it this, Arkada could only produce one "certified frosty" for the whole year and only when there was no other contenders at the end of the year.
So if none were "top tier" in his eyes, whats the point of making lists of shows that don't stand out? It makes the most sense to just scrape together what rose to the top by the end of the year and highlight that, which is what this video is...
My personal anime list for the year:
1. Mob Psycho 100 (Poignant character scenes in a gag comedy action? Sign me up!)
2. JoJo: DiU (Incredible execution on one of the best parts manga-wise. DP really stepped up their game.)
3. Sakamoto Desu Ga? (Holy shit this show's funny.)
4. KonoSuba (A show that pulled off ripping apart boring harem fantasy LNs way better than anything I've seen, and it's a damn good comedy to boot)
5. Keijo! (I'm probably going to get flamed for this one, so hear me out. This series has the most over-the-top action of any anime I've seen all year. It's not a complete masterwork, but as far as dumb fanservice series go, this one just goes above and beyond in being as silly yet satisfying as possible.)
Honourable mention to My Hero Academia. Great main protagonist, but 13 episodes is not enough to flesh out the story. I binged ahead and it gets better, but the anime from what is shown just doesn't do enough to win over most people. Also the side characters are incredibly... meh.

I don't know what good thing happened but I doubt it can compete with all that.

2 anime tie for my favourite of 2016; Yuri!!! On Ice and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu but as for my BEST.... Rakugo definitely takes that spot. Amazing storytelling, beautiful animated and scored (musically) and extremely interesting and perfectly flawed main cast of characters. So happy we are in the midst of season 2 right now 😁
Feel sorry for you mate, Madman Entertainment brought Your Name to theaters for New Zealand and Australia. It was such an amazing film. Felt so lucky I got to watch it in theaters.

I bailed on Yuri on Ice and March Comes in like a Lion after their first episodes, because I expected them to be dramas and was put off by all of the broad comedy and shouting characters. Now that I've adjusted my expectations, I may have to give them another shot. My recommendations for the year are (in chronological order): Erased, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, Flying Witch, Sweetness & Lightning and Amanchu.

Give Yuri on Ice a chance until episode 4. The series is just starting and the comedy scenes for the first 3 episodes are for you to get attached and gettin to know the characters. As said by the creators there'll wouldn't be any emotion for the characters if they outright started with the ice skating competitions.

I dropped it after exactly four episodes. Too much fanservice, cheesyness and the characters are too offputting to me (I hated the Overly cute portrayal of the guys, everybody was acting like teenage scoolgirls).
Stray mind hmm that's a shame, it literally gets better after Ep 4. So much feels ugh..also the "fan service" starts to makes sense later on lol. And Victor is indeed a lovable total savage.
Concrete Revolutio is such a great and unique historical/superhero series about Japan post-WWII, with a ton of depth. Its second season was my anime of the year. Super underrated.
I feel like Joker Game could've been an honorable mention too. I feel like a lot of people missed out on that show. I was always intrigued by each episode and it really felt like a peak behind the curtains of a realistic spy syndicate

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is hands down the most memorable but underrated anime this year. It has amazing pacing, characters, and story, and with only 13 episodes, they fly by super fast. I wish more people would give it a try.
A little bit sad that Tanaka-kun is Always Listless didn't get a mention. It was my favourite anime of the year despite being a slice-of-life which I don't normally watch. I really hope you can do a video of it in the future!
