Yes! I stay away from romance novels (especially when it's under the Young Adult genre *shudders*) and sometimes romance webcomics too but I'm a sucker for romance anime that make you bawl your eyes out while watching it.
I share the same mindset, I can’t seem to find a connection to live action show or movie that is purely romance, but somehow through the style and charm of a romance anime I can thoroughly be engrossed in the story to the point where it bothers me when the desired relationship goes wrong or falls apart altogether.
Same here, I just hate the steretypical romances that a lot of western films have. In comparison, so many anime have differing romance stories which is why I love it.
I'm a sucker for a Good romance. My fav is Toradora.

When my fiance died, Clannad was the one anime that i stumbled on, at some hazy point in the past, that hit me so fucking hard that it forced me to spill all the sadness i had stored inside me, thus forcing me into a 3-weeks-state of full on depression and straight full nights of insane crying.
After that, i slowly started to stand again and at some point, years later, i was able to empty myself of all that sadness, remaining only the useful feelings and good memories.
If wasnt clannad, i would have gotten so far gone into sadness that i surely would have ended my life. At that time i was already contemplating the idea, so yeah... Clannad saved my life.

I feel for you. As a person whos going through depression myslef it makes me happy that we can be part of a community where we can talk about issues this and not get judged but yet get support from people who understand us.
anime really is a medium that is unique, and it jus teaches me things or gets me through ordeals like no other medium would be able to. I'm glad it was there for u in ur time of need man, hope ur prospering.
It's been many years since I've watched Clannad and Clannad Afterstory and I've only watched it once but that fucking Dango song gets me literally every time I hear it.

My first time rewatching Clannad, the Dango song (Nagisa's Theme) starts playing in the first minute and it already had me in tears.

Well, Ore Monogatari was pretty damn cute. Sure, the characters where a bit overly innocent, but it was still really cute. As for a romance about an actually married couple, "I Can't Understand What Me Husband Is Saying" was pretty good, and really damn funny imo xD
aww the good old days that did not exist. Today there are quite a few good romance anime as well, you just need to look better. It is just harder to find these days, as almost everything at leasts gets a sub, and you can find all the anime you ever wanted on the internet. watch Yuri on Ice, great romance.

I generally try not to stick to one type of anime and so I end up watching a wide variety. When I got to watching Clannad and After Story (because a friend of mine watched it first and told me to watch it) I was amazed how great it was. I haven't watched a lot of romance anime mainly because I hate the "will senpai notice me?" thing that most romance anime seem to have. Anyway, Clannad (more specifically After Story) I was shocked to find that I really enjoyed it. I was talking to myself after finishing the anime and said, "I hope there are more great romance anime like this one".....then I found Toradora.....and I loved it. In fact, I love Toradora more than Clannad (yes, yes, I know.....). After that well....I started to watch more romance anime. The reason why I watch romance anime is the same reason why I watch any anime....I want to watch a great story, with great characters, and a great ending.

Yes, hello, I am a 24 year old man who still thinks Toradora is the best romance anime. Like with what you mentioned while showing Nodame Cantabile the audience can tell the two main characters are actually in love with each other and it's the journey they make to indeed find out that they love each other that makes it. I want to gush and ramble a bit about Toradora and my experience with it, so I will. Every time I rewatch it I gain more appreciation for every character. During my first viewing about 6 years ago I hated Ami and had Ryuji as one of my favorite characters and now I really appreciate Ami's character and think Ryuji is actually one of the more mundane parts of the anime. It's something I never expected from an anime that I had heard had a "textbook tsundere" with a script by a rather divisive writer. It was just something I had watched on a whim expecting very little and finding what I believe to be one of the best representations of what love is in anime. Taiga and Ryuji mistake their infatuation towards, admiration of and just plain acceptance by Minori and Kitamura respectively as love all the while leaning on each other while being truly candid with each other. In my opinion it's an absolutely beautiful anime with a few shortcomings that I can overlook without hesitation.

Also everyone mentions their love for Clannad and Clannad After Story which are like as a whole one of my favorite series of all time, but mate those scenes with my boy Renji and my favorite female character AKA my best girl Chihiro from Ef a Tale of memories really hit my heart.

My second favorite romance anime that everyone needs to watch is "Emma: A Victorians Romance." First one is Clannad.
Clannad, Kare Kano, and Ef are easily 3 of my favorite romance anime and I'm really happy to see them depicted here. I still get a little choked up when I hear some of the music from Clannad in particular. Anyways, great vid! Thanks for all your hard work and dedication

It's a while that I did, but I still know that the romance was not the main plot. The romance was driven by the trade decisions the protagonist took, not the other way around.

Great video Ark! I pretty much agree with everything you said. A well executed romance anime is one of my favorite things to watch. Sadly a large part of the genre is generic crap, but finding those rare shows that really get you emotionally invested and pull your heartstrings makes it all worth it. Words can't explain the void Clannad after story left in my heart. Hearing Dango Daikazoku without being prepared for it gives me such goosebumb..

I honestly started tearing up when Nagisa started playing, and Arkada, I cannot thank you enough for making this video.
I have seen A LOT of anime since Clannad and Clannad After Story, yet it's remained at the top of my favourite anime list since I finished it. I fully admit that over time, hearing the opinions of people who didn't enjoy the show and watching new shows had worn down my love for the series and made me question why it's my #1, but seeing it get recognition even today makes me so happy. It's a show which has truly impacted my life, despite being a simple slice-of-life anime, and I'm so grateful to know there are other people out there who love it as much as I do.

My favorite romance anime is Kimi ni Todoke. It's the best and most realistic, especially in terms of the inevitable misunderstandings, that I could find. It's also a beautiful visual and audio anime. Please review!

Romance is my personal favorite genre for MANY reasons, some of them personal, but i share some of the issues and preferences you're talking about. This is a wonderful and clear video, in my opinion.
I forget what episode you recommended Nodame but I wanna thank you. It's literally my favorite romance anime with Toradora right behind it.

Wow. I read the comments about the heart strings being pulled when Dango came on in the comments, I thought that I wouldn't be affected but damn! All I gotta say is Clannad never goes away and that void will forever be opened in my heart.
I recently watched Kotoura-san. Not the biggest fan of romances tbh, but I stumbled upon it and told myself "Sure, I'll watch, nothing better to do". After watching all 13 episodes, I felt really happy for the protagonists. Honestly, you couldn't have said truer words throughout the 9 minutes of the video.
Man Ark I've been watching a lot of your old videos lately just cause I like your reviews of certain animes but to go from those to this. To say you have gotten better at these kind of videos is an understatement great video from the clips you chose to your words and tone of voice wow the whole thing gave me goosebumps. For pure romance I gotta go with Fruits Basket just cause Toru Honda is so good but I kind like the romance aspects in Inuyasha and Euraka Seven but those aren't just romances but yeah still gotta see Clannad so sorry about that

I agree with your point of view at this, I'd also like to recommend Gin'iro, Haruka - like Clannad it's all about, as you said it, long journey toward the future of the protagonist and heroine - it also has After Story in it, in fact the story takes place throughout 10 years of their lives, starting from middle school

you know i like these more in depth "rants" you made here. It´s filled with more insigt than a typical review. Those get sligtly stagnant in the current format. It reminds me of gigguk a lot, in a great way. And if you feel inclined you could easily about your broader thoughts about a topic as you have here.
I've never really needed to be able to project myself on the characters in a show, but my favorite shows often hinge on great characters, development and interactions. It's no surprise then that I do enjoy romance shows as they revolve around characters and their interactions. I also think I have a weird father complex (I'm old as far as anime watchers are concerned) that fails to convince me to actually have a child, but causes me to thoroughly enjoy watching children grow up, so a lot of romance shows work for me that way too. A Lull in the Sea was a great example of literally growing up, plus emotional growth that also has gorgeous art to boot.
I've watched and loved every single one mentioned, and i feel proud of it. You guys should try it.

Clannad series and Ef series...these series really made me cry and feel sad but at the same time taught me many things about life...my all-time favorites....
Ark, this is why you should watch Monogatari. It's not a romance anime specifically, but it does have several romance traits to it that you said you liked in this video, such as the main couple getting together early, watching their journey, some feels, not entirely reality based.... plus it's just damn great in terms of narrative and animation.

"Anime like it's astetic is life simplified" Never thought of it that way wow hit the nail on the head love your analysis of these shows yes it's anime however they're great shows first that second happen to be animated to its advantage and it's what makes it so beautiful.
Great show today. I completely agree with you in that I very much appreciate the story of a couples trials during their courtship. My favorite romance anime are Lovely Complex, Toradora and Clannad.

I've continue to watch Twin Star Exorcists. I want to watch these
characters learn and grow and evolve. Maybe that's why I some of my
favorite couples include people like Rokoro and Benio or even Yuu and
Tomori from Charlotte. You know they love each other its just enjoyable
watching them come to terms with that.
One of my favourite romance anime is Nagi no Asukara. I still sitting here hoping that one day you'll review it or at least watch it. It's a mixture of romance with fantasy elements and while is very typically multiple love triangles it's still wonderful to watch and is emotional in places
