Flatland as social critique is great, but it's also just fantastic as a standalone piece of fiction! Great review

I read this years ago and enjoyed it, I didn't know penguin classics had published it. Cool.

    AH! A classic.
You absolutely must follow this one with Rudy Rucker's THE FOURTH DIMENSION (1979).
It's a purposeful and direct continuation of Flatland along the lines you just said: taking into account the advances in physics and cosmology of the 20th century. It is also much more than that, as it pushes into, as the title says, The Fourth Dimension, and includes really jaw-dropping thought experiments in perception.
Plus, plus... after the previous... Julian Barbour's THE END OF TIME (1999)

Thank you for the suggestions! The Fourth Dimension looks really interesting, I will probably start with that one. The End of Time looks a little intimidating, but I will give it a go as well!
