    You are not wrong. This is one of the more turgid titles in the series. I think you may find more joy in the earlier novels. Try Walkers of Dembley, maybe. I don't know that any of them are fabulous. Anything with R W Green as co-author indicates that it was written/published at the end of Beaton's life or published posthumously and I would steer clear of same. These later books are in desperate of real editing, if not a severe prune. I found myself wondering if like Dickens he/she (Green) was paid by the word. Also these later titles are full of grammatical and continuity errors. The characteristics of Agatha et al remain remarkably static. There are also, as you comment on very amusingly, these side roads/detours that lead absolutely nowhere: as per imagined rough sex on (Vicar's wife no. ) kitchen table. Pointless and weird. I also find the titles more tolerable if they are read by the splendid Penelope Keith. Don't know if Americans in general have the same love for the BBC as some of us in Oz do but I would listen to this woman read a paint chart. Never liked the TV series as I thought casting was pretty mediocre and adaptation is not good. One series which I love to listen to is Charles Paris, louche actor and amateur sleuth, read by Bill Nighy - another old English actor.

    I imagine you haven’t read much horror, but I was curious if you had; what was the scariest book you’ve ever read?

    • @badbettybooks4001
      @badbettybooks4001 21 час назад

      Honestly probably some of the true crime ones I have read. Something about it being real makes it way worse. I only try to pick up true crime if there is another element to the story that I think I will enjoy (ex. the birth of forensic genealogy like in The Forever Witness or a historic case with a unique twist like Failure of Justice). I stick to horror that I think I can manage which is probably why my non-fiction reads are scarier than fiction!

    • @HonorEmpathy
      @HonorEmpathy 15 часов назад

      I completely agree. Reality can be much more frightening once you start peeking behind the curtain. But once you peek you’ll have a choice to make. Either rip the curtain wide open, or tip toe back out the way you came. Since you brought up true crime, I can’t leave without recommending a few. Now this is true true crime. Not the “true crime” spoon fed to us by the mainstream. So I guess this is a warning of sorts as well. Maury Terry- The Ultimate Evil Dave McGowan- Programmed to Kill: The Politics of Serial Murder Nick Bryant- The Franklin Scandal: A Story of Powerbrokers, Child Abuse & Betrayal Thanks for your response and good luck with your channel. You’re a natural.

    Ellison is a kind of sci-fi modernist. His writing was fundamentally humanist but violent as hell which was really popular amongst his readers. I heard someone describe Ellison as a sci-fi Zappa. He was very critical of the sci-fi machine- the publishing industry.

I use the library for all my reading so I didn't have to buy this book so I am not sure where to get the best deal on it is. I would keep checking the second hand sites until one comes up at a good price if you are looking for a copy to purchase.

    I own a similar book by Ian Summers called Tomorrow and Beyond from 1978, if you can find that one it's worth checking out. It's mostly good looking at the artwork. That book tells you who did each of the artwork but nothing on the background of the artists or the artwork. Much of the artwork depicted were movie posters, book and magazine covers (many featured on covers of OMNI Magazine), and even the occasional album cover.

    That skull planet with the Earth turning in to a skull is an album cover from French electronic music artist Jean Michel Jarre and his 1976 album Oxygene, which is a very popular album in electronic music circles. It was French artist Michel Geiss who did the cover (he also did covers to many of Jarre's other albums too).

    I’m absolutely loving these freestyle book reviews-especially the books that you didn’t like. It’s exactly what I need right now!😆 As far as something I read in 2024 that I absolutely did NOT like was Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu. I REALLY wanted to like it. It looks like an innocent middle grade fantasy book, but then it turns kind of goofy, then quickly into horror, and then a poetic metaphor for intense grief. Yikes. Not what I was expecting at all!

    • @badbettybooks4001
      @badbettybooks4001 22 дня назад

      Thanks for the comment and for checking out my videos, I appreciate it! I think expectations play a larger part in my rating of a book than I would probably like to admit. If I am expecting a funny book, but get a book with heavy-hitting themes I might rate it differently than if I knew it was heavy going in. And if I want to like a book and don't (like Roleplaying), that is worse than thinking "hmm this might not be the book for me" and then being proven correct. Thank you again for your comment, and sharing the book you hated in 2024!

    Happy New Year! I hope you have a wonderful 2025 and that you have good luck with your goals. I just opened a Goodreads account this December and I have a modest goal of twelve books plus one. One per month, plus the whole Bible. I think I can do that. I made a lot of progress in becoming more of a reader last year, and for the first time in many years I finished a book that wasn't assigned reading for class. I hope to see this trend continue through 2025. Cheers to a new year and many turned pages!

      @badbettybooks4001 23 дня назад

      Thank you! I hope 2025 is a great year for you as well! It sounds like you have reasonable reading goals for 2025 - the whole Bible will take some time to get through as well and I hope you accomplish that goal. I have not read the whole Bible, but I know those who have, usually using some sort of program that tells them what to read each day over the course of a whole year. Will you be using a similar program? Whatever you end up reading, I hope you are able to find a lot of books to read this year that are enjoyable and not just class-assigned reading!

    I'm sure this is no longer fresh in your mind, but I just read this, and appreciated your review. Am I crazy in the impression that the calendar utilized in this world is vastly different from our own; that 1002 and 1003 may infact be much more than what we think of as a year apart? I feel like Sophie went from courting her partner, losing her sister and career, to married with child, researching her sisters letters in less than a year. The math isn't quite mathing to me. The book frequently uses tides as a unit of time, but whose to say how frequently they occur on an alien world...

    • @badbettybooks4001

      Hm that is a good point that I didn't pick up on when I read the book. That timeline does seem off, but I'm not sure if it is an editing error or supposed to reflect a different calendar system as you suggest. I recently recommended this book to someone else so I am now interested to see if she picks up on the same thing that you did. Thanks for the comment, it is comments like these that make me love putting out book reviews! It helps me think about details in books that I missed or didn't think about.
