      It would depend on what aspects of The Remarried Empress you enjoy- I am very picky with what romances I enjoy, and I am enjoying this one. I am also enjoying the intrigue that is going on and the political manipulating that has to happen in the story. Another romance that I enjoyed was "Kaguya-sama Love is War" - it is quite popular but if you haven't checked it out and want a good romance I would recommend.

    Great review! I think you were right to contest her dismissal of the renaissance as integral to european history. Like you, I found the argument interesting, especially since most countries, even european ones, don't talk about "The Renaissance" as an era from a national context. The tone used and simplistic reasoning for not finding it important was definitely not fitting though!

    • @badbettybooks4001
      @badbettybooks4001 2 дня назад

      Thanks for the comment! As I mentioned, I would be open to hearing her idea, but I don't think this book was the time or place. And to quote her reasoning from the book :"The 'Renaissance' is a problematic idea because it focuses on Italian art, while equally amazing art was being made across Europe, sometimes earlier" and she then goes on to call out Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, and Albrecht Dürer as examples. This was the quote I forgot to tab before filming so I couldn't find it, but I found this argument to be really weak and not in line with any Humanities, Art History, or European History course I have ever taken.

    The thing is, before the Enlightenment, craftspeople _were_ artists. The definition of art and artist has changed, but we treat it todays as if it had always meant what it means today. Thank you for the review, this book sounds interesting. Especially about women, as I know women were kept out of most paid crafts, but then again the middle ages were surprisingly not as harsh on women as some later ages. Shows progress is not always linear.

    I really want to explore the medieval arts more, it's so forgotten in modern culture. Mostly the paintings are viewed as primitive and dull, people have never heard the astonishing beauty of music of especially the late middle ages, and the pictures you showed of the embroidery certainly exceeded my expectations! Great video, I look forward to checking out your other videos on medieval art :) Do you have any recommendations of medieval literature?

      Thanks for watching,and for the comment! I've been really enjoying learning about the art from the era. As for recommendations, I am not sure I am the most well-read in literature that stems from the medieval era. I have read many of the Icelandic sagas for a class on Icelandic history I took in college. I remember enjoying those. I also enjoyed reading Beowulf. I feel like it is late medieval, if it can be considered medieval at all, but I enjoyed Dante's Inferno as well. I read that as part of a Humanities course in college and the discussion was great. In the past year I have read Forbidden Rites which dissects a surviving manuscript on necromancy magic from the middle ages. I also read A Medieval Book of Beasts: The Second Family Beastiary, which was the text + commentary from a beastiary. I also read and loved Basilisks and Beowulf by Tim Flight which discussed the role of monsters in Anglo-Saxon literature. Hopefully something in this wall of text piques your interest!

      Thanks for the comment! I tend to get stuck on themes when reading non-fiction and currently it is medieval times. As for Dostoevsky I have not read him. A lot of the classics intimidate me. I loved reading them in college when I would discuss with a class, but reading them on my own is sometimes challenging. I feel like I am missing so much that would come out in a group discussion. I've even considered signing up for a local community college course just to read some and be able to take part in a good discussion group.

When it comes to feeling like missing something, I can definitely relate, but even if you don't get all the historical references or deeper message, there is still so much to be appreciated on surface level in my opinion. Still, if you ever pick up Dostoevsky (or Tolstoy), I'd love to talk about them with you through e-mail or something along those lines. Saw you asking about shorter novels and I can recommend "White Nights", one of Dostoevsky's early works. There's also "Notes from Underground", which is, in my opinion, one of his best works and it's just around 200 pages. Hope you decide give the Russians a shot!

    Very interesting! I had never heard of any of these books, I seem to have different tastes to you, but I feel inspired by you to pick up some non-fiction at least, something I've been bad at doing! Been a good reading year for me thus far. Some highlights include: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, by no means a flawless book, in fact the ending is quite bad, but I really loved it anyway; Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn captured the mildly depressing American small town feel really well for me; The Voyeur by Alain Robbe-Grillet had an interesting and very beautiful feel of time where memory, experience and daydream intermingle. Currently I'm reading If on a Winter's Night a Traveller by Italo Calvano, and it could certainly become one of my new favourites if it keeps it up.

I read a pretty even split between fiction and non-fiction, but what I actually read is usually all over the place! I've also forayed into the Shin-Hanga art movement in Japan, Fukushima, Linguistics, and some American history. My "read" list of the year is a mess haha. Hey! Thank you so much for following this up. I didn't expect you to get to this one so quickly. Another fantastic, thorough, and insightful review. It is interesting that there is such an overlap within the book series. Did you find that it acted as a sort of aid to memory while viewing, reminding you to layer in all the things you've learned from the other books and apply them to the current subject? I was particularly interested in the narrative shown within the buildings. Almost a sort of proto-comic or storyboard Also, the inclusion of the comparison between the French and Ethiopian styles was fascinating. It's something I've never really thought about before, and as you say something worth exploring Looks like another one I'll need to pick up Thanks again!

      Thanks for the comment! I was able to review this so quickly because the library processed this hold faster than usual, which was very nice. Sometimes my holds linger in limbo for months. I find that the overlap does help cement ideas or connections as I review the books I read. Actually, since I started reviewing books on RUclips I remember more of what I read and I make more connections between other books. As people comment on older videos I am reminded of past books, and I have to answer questions from viewers and make connections for new videos which also helps. Having a channel has been worth it for that reason alone, plus the additional benefits of learning how to talk about books (a whole different skill I am still learning) and receiving recommendations from viewers. I am now on the hunt for a book on Ethiopian manuscripts, something I had never thought of until this book. I love finding unexpected new things to explore in books. Hopefully you enjoy the book as well!
