What’s poppin’, Barbarians? It’s me MT and welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show! Heavy Spoilers coming up for the Shogun series from FX because we’re about to get into it! So grab your favorite katana or blunderbuss and let’s cover this conflict!
After an insanely stressful season of playing politics and slaying assassins, the final episode of the Shogun series of course ends with Yoshii Taranga on top…thanks to the brave and noble sacrifice of Mariko at the end of Episode 9. As much as many people wanted Mariko to walk away from that explosion unscathed, she took the full force of that impact…leaving John Blackthorn to grieve the loss of the only woman that he loved…well…the second woman that he loved. Dude has a whole wife and family back over in England that he totally ditched in favor of sailing the high seas…but luckily for John, the concept of paying child support wasn’t invented yet so you could just do shit like that. But anyways, as the true operative behind Yoshii Taranaga’s “Crimson Sky” offensive to take the capital, Mariko’s true role as a hostage inside of Osaka Castle was to do what Toranaga never could…change the heart of Lady Ochiba, Mariko’s childhood friend and POLITICAL ROLE HERE. Through Mariko’s sacrifice, Ochiba’s extremely hardened heart towards Toranaga would soften just enough for her to shift her influence from Ishido’s army to Toranga’s army…thus causing all of the other houses that were following Ishido to be forced to ally themselves under the banner of The Heir.

Can't deny Yabushige's actor performed masterfully and it was absolutely worthy of an Emmy award and Fuji’s comment on Blackthorn being the last hands to hold Mariko was a call back to episode 1, when Fuji’s son was to be killed for her husbands disrespect. I still have not seen anyone comment on this aspect so I will do it here:
The line Toranaga delivers when he frees the falcon revealed something to me--"may you have many daughters". When Toranaga lost his son, he was quick to consider that he has another son. When Toranga allows Hiromatsu to commit seppuku, again he moves on rather cavalierly.
The deaths and lives he gives great importance to are the female ones.
Toranaga forbids Fuji from joining her husband and son in death. She goes on to serve as Anjin's consort serving the valuable role of elevating Anjin's standing with Toranaga.
Mariko, too, is vital to elevate Anjin's importance. Serving as a translator, she makes it seem that what Anjin has to say is of great value to Toranaga. This puts the Portuguese on the defensive. She is also useful because of her connection with the Portuguese priest, Father Alvito, who is no doubt an information pipeline to the Portuguese trader-merchants. This elevated role of Mariko sets up her mission as Crimson Sky.
Lady Ochiba No Kata too is of vital importance; she is mother to the crown heir. Thru her alone does any successor ruler have legitimacy.
In the end, Toranaga employs Mariko who has craved a noble death to follow that of her father's wrongful execution as a traitor for killing a brutal and ruthless leader Lord Kuroda Nobuhisa. This of course paved the way for Taiko's rule, from which Lady Ochiba gains her prestige and power as mother to Taiko's heir. Thus, while Taiko, Lady Ochiba and the rest of the regents that followed had noble titles and standing, Mariko's family was executed as treasonous and she herself was sold as chattel, giving her only value as Toda Buntaro's husband.
Enter Toranaga who knew of Mariko's long standing desire to wash the disgrace from her family's name, and to die an honorable death fighting those who lived lavishly while her family was forced to bear the humiliation. Toranaga gave agency to Mariko, allowing her to become Crimson Sky thereby undoing the alliance of the nobles under Ishido. She exposed Ishido as a petty man and a coward for employing assassins and holding women and children hostage to garner compliance of the other regents. Lady Ochiba only aligned with Ishido to obtain protection for her heir son, which Ishido provided so long as Lady Ochiba No Kata committed the Taiko's army to him. Mariko's death, and her poem about a leafless branch and her remark about flower becoming a flower only when it falls, and Lady Ochiba No Kata --which means the lady who lives in the Room of the Fallen Leaves--resonated deeply with Lady Ochiba No Kata. She realized that Ishido does not value her or her heir son, and a man who is willing to send assassins will do anything to claim power. Lady Ochiba was struck by Mariko's loyalty to Toranaga, she also realized that Ishido's grip over the Council members was slipping rapidly. She sought Toranaga's protection for herself and her son, believing him to be more honorable that Ishido, as indicated by Mariko's loyalty to him. Her aligning with Toranaga was a fait accompli regarding the coming battle and the Council of Regents.
Thus, in this story, female power was far more important than any male power. Many times, males are discarded like refuse, but the female lives and deaths are of utmost importance and value. This is why Toranga blesses the Falcon to have many daughters.

Great post. Mariko was the "flower" so I wonder if the explosion that killed her was the "wind." This might explain why she wasn't blown to pieces. A freshly fallen flower is still beautiful before it decays.

Recently married, when I heard the 1980's TV miniseries of Shogun was going to be aired, my wife and I went out and bought, on credit, our first tiny portable color TV in order to see it in color. It was worth it! Now I own a huge color TV and am so glad to have lived long enough to see this remake of Shogun. I think that over time both versions will be honored as great cinematographic achievements, classics to be treasured.

I love your insights. ❤ but Fuji wasn't becoming a catholic nun. She was becoming a Buddhist nun which were common in Japan. And what's more
I have read the book and saw the original 1980 miniseries. Although Fuji ( Fujiko in the book) died in the novel. She never died in the 1980 miniseries nor she became a nun. I think she changed her mind and later became Anjin-san's wife. She was becoming a Nun more so for her husband and son. Not just for Mariko-san. However Blackthorne didn't want her to leave him. So I think he wanted to show her a sailor's funeral. In which is believed by sailors that a person's soul and spirit will be around forever. By showing her this and together they buried her family and Mariko-san. She later decided to stay as his consort and perhaps later his wife. Because of this act. They moved on and became a couple. As for Toda Buntaro, he lost not only his wife but his father. So besides his son. He acknowledges Blackthorne as family. Great review. ❤.

    • @24X7CARZ
      @24X7CARZ 18 дней назад

It’s also possible that Fuji’s fate (offscreen) is the same as in the book, and becoming a nun is the cover story that will help ensure Blackthorne and others don’t know what she has planned. The looks she gives during her last scenes with Blackthorne could be interpreted as hinting toward joining the family she loved and tragically lost sooner vs. later. I love what season 10 revealed as well as what it leaves open to supposition!

@@AirborneAnt Not true, early on the point was made that Torunaga was not going to win, unless he defeated his enemy with strategy and guile. The entire show we are challenged to imagine how Torunaga is going to defeat his enemy, who outnumbers him 5 to 1. He says multiple times that Crimson Sky.. the name of the war plan for a direct assault on Osaka Castle is not a viable plan. The entire time, his samurai are playing along with the deception, but none can guess his plan. Ultimately his oldest and mostly loyal general sacrifices himself, simply to lull his enemy into thinking he has lost. Then Mariko is sent to the court, and places the enemy into a dilemma.. loosen your grip on the council, by freeing the hostages, or kill the childhood friend of lady Ochiba, your strongest ally. In the end, Mariko forces him to do both! Instantly winning the war before it's even started. At first, all these strange Japanese protocols seem weird and foreign, however by the end of the story.. we understand that this is a civilized society that understands deeply the connections between politics and war, and the protocols are carefully designed signals sent between rivals to reduce war and killing. The ultimate signal being the sacrifice of ones own life. If you study war at any serious level.. this is a masterpiece!

The official podcast is so interesting and enhances each watch of the show. I recommend it, MT and Paul. This is a great show to watch. A lot of depth throughout the show; and I gotta say that I think Toranaga is actually a complex villain; sort of like Magneto with Xavier’s tendency towards peace. Certainly no clean cut hero. One thing that you forgot or simply didnt know is that Adams was not the only guy taken to Tokugawa, the 2nd mate of De Liefde Jan Joosten van Lodensteyn was also taken to Tokugawa and was made a samurai alongside Adams and also held a fief where modern day Tokyo station is located.
Jan Joosten van Lodensteyn was instrumental in setting up trade relations for the Japanese and Lodensteyn was made the main advisor on trade and foreign relations, it is also more likely tat Lodensteyn was the one training the Japanese on how to use the cannons from the ship since it was a Dutch ship thus Dutch cannons.

The main takeaway for me is to never underestimate anyone and to keep an open mind when dealing with foreigners.

Japan at the time was still not a unified country, and there were wars all the time... which caused great suffering and death. Toranaga and his samurai would understand that ultimate victory in war would mean lasting peace.. and sacrificing themselves in political intrigue, was MORE valuable than dying in battle. This is why all of Mariko's samurai give their lives without hesitation in a suicide attack on the gates of Osaka castle. They understand the strategic genius of this action. This is why Mariko stands in front of the cannon. There is even a part of the the scene where you can see she has a realization... this is her opportunity to win the war! She orders Blackthorne to stand aside.. and makes a speech, before the cannon fires. Show knows the political consequences of her sacrifice will break the enemies alliance, restoring the Shogun, and bringing lasting peace to Japan.

When Yabushige wanted to ask Anjin to perform the final beheading (kaisyaku), Toranaga said, ``No.'' This also gave me a sense of Toranaga's consideration for Yabushige himself and the Kashiki family. When Yabushige said, ``Then, I would like Toranaga-sama to do it for me,'' Toranaga immediately agreed. This is also Toranaga's feelings for Yabushige.
In those days, it would not have been honorable to have kaisyaku be a foreigner from an unknown country.
However, despite such betrayal, Toranaga kaisyakud Yabushige with his own hands. Normally, a person of that rank would not kaisyaku his subordinates. It was an honor for Yabushige. The Kashiki family will be able to pass on their achievements to their descendants to the extent that they were able to receive kaisyaku from Toranaga. Yabushige seems to have had a slightly distorted desire to be thrown away like garbage and fed to dogs...

Toranaga mastered the art of war. He appeared weak and feeble and feigned compliance, when he was ready for war and itching to fight. He prepared for the fight in such a manner that the war was already won before he ever drew a blade. He manoeuvred scorned nobles in such a manner that made their vengeance equal decisive blows that sowed division amongst his enemies. He played disloyal vassals so they thought they were playing him, but he was in control the entire time. He deliberately antagonised his son by revoking titles a duties in order to spurn on compulsive behaviour. This WAS deliberate. He confirmed as much we he thanked his dead son for buying him time. Despite the loses, everything was moved by the hand of Toranaga. Even down to his continued outright denial of wanting to be shogun, like his ancestors. Every move he made was to pacify his enemies into believe he was less of a threat than he actually was. Appear as if you are weak when you are strong. Acting sick. Arguing with his council. Watching his friend kill himself in protest. Hiding away from the public eye. Everything was done to portray a weak and feeble man who had given up and accepted defeat. Until Mariko exposed Ishida for what he was. A weak coward who used women and child as hostages to threaten the rest of the regents into compliance. Once that was done and the heirs mother sent word to Toranga, the act was no longer required. The war could be fought in earnest because he had already won. All the chips had already squarely fallen on his side of the table and his hand was matching set royal flush. the title of shogun was basically already his at this point...
    Masterful display...

It has been years since I read the book, but I still remember parts that were different from this mini-series. The 1980 production was more faithful to the book but still missed a couple of things. As Blackthorne's position increased to Hatamoto, he and Omi became friends. After the earthquake, Omi and Blackthorne dug up and found Toronaga's mangled sword which he then discarded. Also, Toronaga awarded that prostitute/courtesan that Blackthorne slept with, whom Omi was in love with, to Blackthorne. Blackthorne gave the contract to Omi. The Lady of the Willow world got to build her brothels. Toronaga made sure Blackthorne never left Japan as he was amongst the very few people loyal to him whom Toronaga could trust. It was Toronaga who destroyed his ship to keep Blackthorne from going after the Black Ship. Lastly, Toronaga, in real history threw out the Catholic church from all of Japan a few years after the Battle of Sekigahara. Blackthorne suffered from temporary blindness after the explosion. Yabu also enjoyed boiling that dutch kid in boiling water. Yabu was treacherous and ambitious from day one. He wanted the Erasmus for himself and to have Blackthorne train a Japanese crew and serve him. With that ship, he could command a lot of power in Japan. Toranaga knew of Yabu's treachery and inclination to be a traitor when they witness the sunrise together. During that meeting, they made a pact that Yabu then broke. Yabu had a samurai's execution seppelku with witnesses, ritual, etc. The book explained WHY Toronaga liked and respected Blackthorne from the very beginning. The book explains that in their first meeting, Toronaga questioned Blackthorne about his intentions trying to get a good measure of his character. Toronaga asked Blackthorne under what mitigating circumstances was it ever honorable to be a pirate and steal from foreigners. Blackthorne mentioned that he could get away with being a pirate in a respectable manor "If you win." That key response is what drew Blackthorne to Toronaga's favor. "If you win." The victor makes the rules. The victor writes the history books. Toronaga knew Blackthorne was a man after his own heart. The current series was excellent as was the 1980 version. Both are worthy of owning in a dvd collection and should be seen as two entirely different stories. The 1980 version had a lot more romance and no soft porn as this one did. The book of course was able to explain what everyone was thinking. Had the 1980 version had English subtitles, viewers would've understood the story much better. But it was the producers decision to not do that to give the viewer the same language barrier that Blackthorne had. One final thought; Sanada is an excellent actor and probably the best in Japan today. The 1980 version had Toshiro Mifune who was considered the "Lawrence Olivier or Marlon Brando" of Japanese film. Both were excellent, but Mifune's acting was as powerful to watch as Marlon Brando. Cosmo Jarvis did a good job as Blackthorne. But Richard Chamberlain could act circles around Cosmo. Chamberlain was in an entirely different class with many great films to his credit: the Thornebirds, The Bourne Identity, Count of Monte Cristo, 3, 4 Musketeers, too many to list.

Fuji was going to become a Buddhist nun, not a Catholic nun. Buddhist nuns also live in what is referred to in English as "convent". There has been no indication that Fuji practiced Christianity in the series, so we should only assume Fuji became a nun in the Buddhist tradition.

Toranaga is not a Master's mind, he just doesn't care for anyone rather himself. Even is own son! Very easy to have sucess like this when you are a dictator with followers who blindly follow your orders.

NGL, I have made a few theories for where this show might go to for a possible S2, with Toronaga asking John to build him a fleet, he may also wage war or a campaign against the Spanish bases that John mentioned earlier in the show that were occupied and guarded by Ronin, so we may see some action with how Toronaga may deal with those as well as how the Spanish/Catholic Priests might fare now with Toronaga giving them land in Edo to build a church, albeit next to a Consort/Brothel which would lead to some interesting interactions to say the least, not to mention that Ishido may have some ruse or involvement that might throw Toronaga's prediction of him not having a banner or the Heir's forces with him that one month from when the Finale ended/took place, who knows, maybe Toronaga's fleet that he made John make for will be ready and we see an all out battle and afterwards John sailing to those Spanish gunrunning bases to take them out, more interaction between John and Buntaro would also be interesting to see with Buntaro possibly teaching John how to use Fuji's Family swords/katanas properly like a samurai, we also saw old John having Samurai armor in his room when his grandkids were inspecting it so John learning and becoming a Samurai like how Nathan Algren did in the movie "The Last Samurai"(another samurai movie that Hiroyuki Sanada played in) might be a possibility too!

In the book, I don’t think Blackthorne left Japan. The book said it was his “fate” to stay in Japan. Please let me know if this is right. If it is, it leaves one to wonder if that house is in Japan.
