Sup guys, one thing I breezed over a bit in the video is that this modification uses a 99-00 exhaust cam, and can be done to 1.8L Miata engines 1994 - 2000. A 94-97 exhaust cam can also be used, but it's not quite as aggressive as the 99-00 cam. 1.8L and 1.6L parts are not cross compatible as they have different cylinder spacing. The 01-05 engines use a special intake cam for VVT which can't be swapped out for a normal cam. Unfortunately we don't have the 1.6L NB in the U.S. so maybe someone in the comments can speak on that information. As for the BP5A/MSM intake cam swap, yes it's a drop-in part so obviously it's easier than the exhintake mod. But you're looking at $25 vs $300 for about the same gains, the choice is yours!
As far as I understand, you can use any 1.8l exhaust cam for it though, not only a 99-00 one. Like I have a 99-00 head (bp4w) And if I took my exhaust cam from my '95, it would still be a ex/intake mod. Am I wrong?
@@Nasonix2 Yes, but the BP05 exhaust cam is less aggressive than the BP4W/BP6D so if you're going to do the work, might as well get the biggest profile you can.
It really disappointing to see probably one of the most detailed Miata RUclipsrs get so few views compared to other car RUclipsrs, but I'm really happy your still making videos for the real Miata guys out there, keep up the good work
Thank you very much from Spain! Right now I'm building a BP-4W, I've installed Maxpeedingrods conrods, BP-Z3 pistons, harder spring on the oil pump, billet oil pump gears, engine head port matching, square top intake manifold, 64 mm throttle body and Jackson Racing adapted exhaust manifold, I'll need a ECU, and I'm excited to keep watching your hard work in order to make my Miata faster!!! Great job man! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Greg, I love you dude, your work it’s fucking sublime man. You answer so many question and inspire people so much to modify their miatas... We’re so lucky to have on Earth bro.
Cam you pls do some diy porting and test that? Start with throttlebody only and then try heads next? Thats alotta work but that would be some gold content
This is really usefull since my 1.6 its the 90hp version which only change with the 115hp one is the exhint cams. As i read only puting other camshafts should be like a 115hp engine. Thanks miata dad
@@shrimp562 I’m pretty sure he’s referring to an European Spec NB 1.6. They were rated at 90HP and had a little CAS sensor on the front of the valve cover like its 1.8 counterpart. No physical connection to either of the camshafts like the NA. So I’m pretty sure this mod is perfectly possible on his car.
Search youtube channel "conrad" for his ex-intake mod. He didn't have to drill a new hole in the cam gear. Simply figured out how many teeth he needed to rotate the cam and then put on the timing belt. Basically you make your own new intake and exhaust alignment marks. EDIT I noticed his video says for 1.6....wondering now if it would apply to 1.8 cars as well
I assume this could be an important question for some: Does this effect the non-interference design of the engine? Will the valves be able to hit the piston with the extra lift?
I feel like Miata Dad made this video just for me. Thanks Dad. I love you too Also I'm curious how the Ex-Intake compares to the mazdaspeed intake cam. I know the Ex-Intake has slightly more lift but not much else.
U gotta bring back saying "aka Miata dad"😂 Also if you want a more mean sound, change ignition timing from 10 degrees to 14 or if you really want 17 or 18 but 14 is more reserved
Amazing content! Thank's for all this precious intel. I was wondering, while watching; Is there a way to not drill the cam gear, and instead change timing marks on the gear? If you know the angle needed you can take it into account when putting the timing belt, and set your timing accordingly. Unless there's something else I don't know. Maybe if you try to do that you fall between gear teeth and not get the right angle?
My ear dynos said there was a difference in the exhaust note at start up/idle. The cam swap clip sounded much more free flowing. However, my eyes had just visually seen the micrometer size difference. And that image was still inside my brain at the same moment of the clips. XD
i’m having trouble finding oem camshafts around me. is there any advice you can give me to find them, on marketplace i can’t find any part out engines. also if i put a bigger camshaft in, do i need a tune. i still have a stock ecu.
Hey man all I have is a hsk intake and the same exhaust as you have in my 1.8 02 nb, and when I lift at like 4,000 rpm it will shoot flames, completely stock car otherwise, why is this? Of course I like it I’m just curious :)
Ok guys I need help. I got a 93 that is bone stock and when I press in the clutch is 1st going slow the car makes a loud couple clunks. And I’m lost. Iv read forums for hours and found nothing. Any help is appreciated.
I know this is an old video, but I was hoping you could shoot me a reference to actualy dyno numbers for gains off of this upgrade? Searching forums just results in people heckling each other about this since circa 2004!
can i use the 1.6l exhaust cam of a NB? (EU) or is it only the 1.8... so i have measured the intake cam vs the exhaust cam lift: 1mm more lift in the exhaust side. the 1.6 (EU/JP 1999) the length is the same as the intake cam
This or swap directly for an oem intake cam from mazdaspeed mx5 turbo? Would be cool compare both. Just searching for this mod the whole week and here you come with this video :D Edit: i just saw you mentioned around 6:49
you should do a dyno chart comparison of the 14 degree timing advance vs. the 10 degree advance I've never seen the data accurately represented, everybody just says "well, it FEELS faster"
On the NB it's a little more tricky, you have to install one of those adjustable crank position sensor mounts, kinda whack. However, Most of the gains going from the stock ECU to the tuned ME442 were in the ignition timing. (113whp -> 120whp)
