    About the moon...Some of you know a full moon was for men, a crescent was for the ladies. A gap was left at the top for ventilation and light. My folks dug a big hole and used rock and mortar to build the throne. Framed around it,tin roof. Oh we were fancy and had a solid oak carved lid and deck. Complete with a dowel for hanging TP, -ie- Sears and Roebuck catalog. Neighbors were really elite as they had a mini throne for the kids next to the big one. This was in NC mountains pre 1964.

    Now that's a nice outhouse! My ex-husband grew up on a ranch, off-grid but not called that back then in the 1950's. He told me he remembers having to dig out a path in the snow before school and wasn't too happy about it. This is outside of Butte, MT up in the mountains. Needless to say he found another method in the middle of the night and that was to use his bedroom window to just go pee. Can't say I blame him! The way the world is going off-grid is definitely the way to go!

    Hello! 😃
    This is a really beautiful outhouse! Our well has stopped working 7 times in the past 5 years. We've had to wait anywhere between (1-3 months) before it could be repaired each time. With 4 growing children, farm animals & gardens, it's been wearing having to truck & carry heavy jugs to our home each day to keep up with the basics of life.
    I never realized how much water touches our lives until we had none. I realized that if we had a proper outhouse, we'd require FAR less water. I tried to convince my husband to build a self-composting toilet as a short-term solution until our well could be fixed this time around but he wasn't having it. 😅 I guess he'd rather move 1,000 lbs of water up hill each day like a pack mule then use an unorthodox toilet. Don't ask me why. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The man survived a war in a dessert, where soldiers had to take turns collecting & burning everybody's poo each day... Perhaps that's why? 🤔
    Anywho, when I heard Jewel, the singer, talk about how much she LOVES her family's outhouse in Alaska when she was interviewed on Dax Shepherd's Audible podcast ("Arm Chair Expert"), I was convinced! 💖 If Jewel would rather use an outhouse than any other bathroom on the planet, sign me up! Who says a outhouse can't be classy? 🤣
    I could build this outhouse from start to finish with my sons -- except for the roof. Rooves scare me. 😬 I know how to set posts & frame walls, but would never forgive myself if I failed to construct a proper roof & it collapsed on someone.
    ❓Would you mind sharing your building plans, so I could learn how to build the roof safely? I would VERY much appreciate that. 🤗 I'm sure it could help others, too.
    Thank you! 🕊️

      Ms. Stacie, I'm sorry but I don't have plans to share. I just built this 'on the fly'. As for your roof, my suggestion is not to make this as tall as I did. It is only about 4' wide so your roof is as simple as 2X4's than span the opening, spaced 16" apart with a angle so they drain....on top goes metal roofing. Good luck!

    Hi, I like the info about the 12v solar system. I was more interested in how to construct the pit correctly, materials and how to connect the vent and fan...do you have more information on those actual details?

    • @Michigan_Backwoods
      @Michigan_Backwoods  2 года назад

      Ann, the pit is somewhat simple. You'll need to dig a deep hole, perhaps 48" deep and the simply construct a box with treated plywood tokeep the pit from collapsing inside itself when wet. As for the vent and fan, the vent simply runs from the roof down into the box. If I had to do it over again, I would not use a fan. The didn't afford much odor control (there wasn't much to start with) and over two years the motor rusted and needed to be replaced. Now I don't use it all. Hope this helps!

    Well done on your classy outhouse. Most enjoyable to watch and learn.
    My 7 year old Thai daughter watches these videos with me, she loves the snows but cannot understand how cold it is.
    From your location description you are in Insulation zone 7. So you have built well for that region.
    Questions.
    Will you build a cut firewood shed?
    Is the cabin 12.5 ft x 16 ft, as is your plans (The cabin images seem to suggest slightly longer)?
    By way of contrast, we build with concrete and ceramic tiles because of white ants & high humidity that will destroy wooden structures in about 10 years.
    Kind regards from Greg in Thailand

  • @judge058

    I saw another venting system where just an ABS (black) pipe was used and positioned on the outside of the structure facing the sun. The sun warmed the pipe and the air in it creating a chimney effect drawing any air smell up and out.

    • @Michigan_Backwoods
      @Michigan_Backwoods  3 года назад

      You may not have been able to see it, but the PVC pipe was used and painted black for this very purpose. It creates a natural draft moving upward, but the fan accelerates it and creates an updraft 'tween your legs! :)

    • @Michigan_Backwoods
      @Michigan_Backwoods  2 года назад

      Yes, you could build a separate room off to the side and plumb the cabin, however, you introduce a whole new problem. We have 4-5 months of below freezing temps so your water tank and plumbing all needs to be done in a heated space. This is only heated on demand. A shower or bathroom with water will require some way to keep your water from freezing when not there/

    How long would it take for an outhouse like this to fill out?

    • @Michigan_Backwoods
      @Michigan_Backwoods  5 лет назад +24

      Way longer than I will live. It gets a deposit about 2x/week for about 30 weeks per year. That is about 60 deposits per year at an average of one pound per deposit. Human waste weighs about 45 pounds per cubic foot, and that would mean I'll fill about 1.33 cubic feet per year. I've got about 36 cubic feet to fill, so that should last me about 27 years before I either need to pump the hole, or move the outhouse to a new spot! I see this as being my Grandson's problem, and I don't even have one yet! :)

      I do not have a well at this location. Water is available via a creek at the bottom of the hill. Putting in an outhouse, or septic drain field always requires a setback from a well head....so you are right is a serious consideration

    • @Michigan_Backwoods
      @Michigan_Backwoods  2 года назад

      A little bit of "poop" engineering went into this. Using the average waste generated by a human in a weekend, we then calculated the related volume generated. This was then converted into CFC (cubic feet of crap). We designed the hole to be able to accommodate 52 weekends x 2 people x 10 years worth of CFC. After 10 years, I may be dead and it becomes a crappy problem for my kids.......but they know they can just cut the support posts that go into the ground with a chain saw, hook it to an ATV and drag it to a new spot. Important: don't forget to cap the old hole or one's boots become rather messy! Good luck!

    • @Michigan_Backwoods
      @Michigan_Backwoods  2 года назад

      Well..........good question about the outhouse fan. In hindsight, I probably wouldn't have done this. We found that the natural draft up the pipe was really sufficient to 'tame' the odors. Secondly, somehow there was a short in the wiring to the fan, and to repair it would require removing the top of the seat to fix it. When we learned that the fan really didn't contribute much benefit, we just let it alone and don't use it......hope this helps!

Il do a video and show how we in Trinidad use 2 oil drums one above the other making the hole 8 feet and also casting a 3 inch concrete slab for the floor. We remove the bottom of the drums so water can soak away. The 2 drums painted inside our wint rot and it prevents the dirt from caving. U guys put more emphasis on the top than the bottom.

      My aunt had an outhouse with two seats next to each other. Is this normally, or a joke?

      Yes, I believe there are tax incentives to buying solar. Check with the IRS, I'm not anywhere near a reliable accountant! :)

    No, this is NOT practical at all! In Finland, we used to have a lot outhouses, long time ago, of course, and still have them at summer places. No, you don't dig a hole in a ground, you make sitting surface a little higher, and we use, like half plastic barrel, under seat, and , of course, there is a door, behind, you can take barrel out and empty it !!! This way you can use it forever, and clean, when needed. We usually dig a hole, furter away, in a forest, and empty the barrel there, then cover the hole with sand ans soil! Be smart about it, this is NOT practical, and that diamond plate, noooo!! You should put metal plate, inside the sitting surface, in front, where pee is splashing, so pee does not penetrate into a wood, easier to keep clean!! Finnish Way is the best way,....just saying ;o)

      Wow! So you have a half barrel filled with both "Number 1" and "Number 2"? Our 'wet' waste filters into the ground (no permafrost) leaving only the solid portions which tend to dry over time. Great to know that different countries have different techniques for managing human waste. Here in the US, we tend not to want to handle human waste anymore than absolutely necessary. I wouldn't like to be moving it from one spot to another...... one trip and you are suddenly covered covered with a big mess. With this method, when the hole is filled (I'll be about 106 years old when my hole fills to capacity) we simply hook up a tractor to the outhouse, pull it about 10ft over a new hole and you are ready to "go" again!

      @@Michigan_Backwoods No, it is NEVER filled, because we empty it, when needed, and there is some holes in there, so it will not collect, you know what ! Anyway, i like the cabin, and even toilet, not the system, so, like a movable stairs in cabin, will build those in mine, question is: Did you use rope, or wire on that pulley system? And Thank You, Enjoy your cabin, and Merry Christmas=))

      @@Eeropolvasti Eero, I used a small plastic coated steel cable (about 3/8 inch) for the pully system. Merry Christmas to you also!

      Thanks, Be Safe! Enjoy your Cabin, will do same pulley system for my Summer Cottage, we have similar loft like you =), and right now I have only ladders, will make narrow stairs, like yours, and...maybe a little handrail...on one side =)@@Michigan_Backwoods
