Are you tired of bland garage walls? I know I am! Time to modernize the look of your garage with with Proslat Slatwall. During Garage Makeover Phase 5 we will be upgrading the electrical to a 100amp subpanel, installing Proslat Slatwall, Home Depot cabinets, and some other odds and ends! Yes, I know technically this is number 6 in the series, however the first video was just a massive cleanup of the garage. These last 5 videos have been improvements to the garage. Be on the lookout for Garage Makeover Phase 6 in the spring!
Slatwall (also known as slotwall) is a building material used in shopfitting for wall coverings or display fixtures. It consists of panels, usually 4 ft. by 8 ft., made with horizontal grooves that are configured to accept a variety of merchandising accessories. The panels are typically made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF), with a finish such as melamine paper pressed or laminated onto one or both sides. Grooves are then machined into the board and painted or fitted with plastic or aluminum inserts. - Wikipedia

Looks great! I had the same issue with the Husky cabinets. I got the heavy duty set, installed the pieces out of the 1st box, then opened the 2nd box and realized the top was dented. I think I made 8 phone calls to Husky and Home Depot. They kept telling me the same thing. FINALLY I talked to someone with some common sense and she just sent me a free cabinet (well it's still on the way) so I'm ending up with the cabinets I originally ordered, plus one large cabinet with slight damage.
Great video. You answered ALL of my questions.
Thumbs up for the Rosevelt quote!
What a change - so much better and it is done (almost). Bear seems very happy with his new space.
Thanks David! Yeah! Almost done, phase 6 this spring. Bear has always loved the garage, now he is in there more than ever. Plus it is now a lot safer in there for him. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend 👍
Glad you still have mad leather skills! Well done looks great. One of the bear.
Awesome transformation, great job!
Thanks! Much appreciated 👍
You Sir, area hero! Your garage is looking fantastic, well done!
Thanks bud 👍!
Getting Maddie to leave the house also helped ........ No brother no worries just get the job done. Great video John on so many levels.
Great job! Bravo!
Thank you very much!
Wow they sure make a difference. Looks good. If you need a place to store those Clod Busters I can help you with that lol
Thanks @Chris Mink! Yeah that Clod Buster must be around 30+ years old, all original. However, I will need to replace all the plastics, as they brittle. All the RC cars on display were used and and abused by me. Some were actually raced when I was in my teens.
Looks great!
Thanks bud!
If this doesn't inspire others to git-r-dun I dunno what will. 💪👍
(TL;DR: LEDs FTW)
About lighting... I had 2 (really?) traditional fixtures in the garage from the original construction. I added 2 more in front of a beam a while back, it helped. All 4 have 100W daylight CFLs from when that was the fad. I still had annoying dark areas. FFW a few yrs and I have a spare 5m roll of LEDs so I put those under the other main beam and wow. To my eye they put out as much light as 2-3 of the CFLs. Now, they probably draw a bit more, but I think the overall light quality is better.
Walmart had some 4ft LED, hanging shop lights on sale last year. The lens covers need to be frosted, but they are brighter than the 5m strip I already wanted to use for the laser area in front of the vehicles. When the CFLs finally burn out its likely I'll replace them w/ lights similar to that. The garage has always felt dim even w/ 400W of CFL & the LED strip.
Ok, that was a bit of a ramble. 🤦🏼
Looks good Tripod
awesome man!
Thanks!
This looks great. I've been looking at the proslat recently. My main question is are their some items that yiu have to drill into the slats or are you able to find an accessory hook for everything?
Epoxy the floor, that will finish the look of the garage and it will help repel any oil stains.
Yeah, I should have done it before installing the tall cabinets. The tall cabinet weigh a ton. I might have it ground, and polished.
Looks great, Tripod! Question for you: How did you finish the electrical outlet that was in the slat wall? Is the outlet far enough out that you could just cover it with a cover plate and the outlet is usable? Did you need an outlet extender, etc?
Greetings Don! Thanks for watching and commenting. I bumped out the will with 2x4’s (furred out). This gave the appropriate gap for a standard gang box. Then I just cut the slatwall around the outlet, then put a cover plate on. Hope that answers your question?
Nice setup!!!
Love the video and the garage transformation! Got a question for you John, what is the name of cabinets with the roll-up doors (the one you have the stereo sitting on top of) and where did you get them?
Greetings Graysparrow, thanks for watching! Those are Wright-Line cabinets, that you will typically find in an office building. That is where I actually got them, we were moving buildings and they were going to toss them. I asked if I could take them, they said "sure"! Wright-Line is now Eaton, I provided a URL below
www.eaton.com/us/en-us/catalog/furniture/filing-and-storage-cabinets.html
I would start with used office furniture warehouses and auctions. This can save you about 90%. As these cabinets were about $7,000 new with all the drawers.
This is a smaller version

@@TripodsGarage Thank you for the quick response! Wow, what a great grab. I'll scour some auction sites, who knows maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks again brother.
Awesome build and outcome! Proslat is expensive: What about all the slatwall that was wasted by the Husky cabinets?
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I cam out better than I anticipated. My brother said the same thing about the slatwall being wasted by being behind the cabinets. Sure this isn’t my brother 😂😂. Pretty much when we sell the house, there will be slatwall and or the cabinets (depending how we sell) that can be a nice feature for someone else.
@@TripodsGarage good point, tripod! I've not decided to go the entire wall or not. In watching subsequent videos on the matter, most people seem to go the entire wall route rather than just a portion. 😀
I bought enough to do all the walls of a 3 car garage and watched your video because I may want to hang some pictures on the walls and I was wondering if it will be a good idea to do all the walls. Currently all my walls are sheet rocked and painted.
Can you install the slatwalls directly on the drywall? What was the reason for the 2x4's? I have no sound at the moment in case you mentioned it
Yes, it can go right over drywall. I furred out the wall with 2x4’s so I can run wires behind it.
@@TripodsGarage Thanks for the response! I was considering doing something similar so I can put some sound insulating material behind the slatwall. I have a room that shares two walls with the garage and I want to insulate the noise in the garage from the room.
I am wondering how I can join those two walls at the corner which will be a convex corner (not concave like you have).
Nice job! You’re going to get a lot of able-bodied men stumped with your craftsmanship 😑…. 😅
