Welcome to our latest instalment in our ongoing series about Two-Party Shitfuckery. Some of you have asked us about the name of this proposed legislation . There isn't a name yet, because it hasn't yet been introduced to Parliament. But there are media reports of an imminent bipartisan deal to introduce such a bill in the coming days/weeks/months (see links in video description). We have an idea of what the so-called reforms will include, based upon the interim report of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters (whose recommendations are cited in this HGA). The final JSCEM report was released today. And to be fair, some of the proposed reforms are good (eg. real time disclosure of donations, lower disclosure threshold...). And yes, we do need to address the undue influence of Big (*cough* Clive Palmer) Money in our elections. But bundled-in with those good proposals, are some proposals that would drastically tilt the playing field even further in favour of incumbents, and the major parties in particular - making it almost impossible for newcomers to raise the necessary funds to compete against them in future elections - thereby entrenching the major parties' duopoly. And the major parties desperately need to rig the rules in their favour before the next election, because their primary vote is at historic lows. If this trend continues, pretty soon they won't have enough people voting for them to form a majority government ever again. The major parties have enough numbers between them to pass this bill without much debate once they introduce it to Parliament. That's why we made this HGA now: to help people understand the negative implications of these proposed changes to the election campaign rules. . We need to make it easier for newcomers to participate in our elections; rather than discouraging participation and thus entrenching the two-party duopoly. So if you're wondering what you can do about this - the best thing right now would be to help raise awareness by sharing this HGA with your friends, family and pets. I like to say "the illusion of choice". I first found out about it when researching the American party donations. I assumed Republicans had big corps backing them so they can win the election. You should have seen my face when I realised, Democrats were getting more funding from all sectors, education, health and industry. That's when I realised the game. And then it all made sense why America has made such little progress in terms of basic laws like free health care, fix to student loans and more.

Usa just did away with any donation limit so you can have the 2 party candidates spend more money on campaign than what would be needed to house all the homeless
Harper rigged election contribution laws in canada because they allowed 3rd party's to get $1.25 per vote(all parties) and said it isn't fair for "other canadians to pay for someone who votes" WTF does that even mean. Instead he raised the tax return to 75% on first 400 donated, 50% on 400-750 and 33.5% on 750-1250. So if you donate 1250 you get 600 back, if you donate 400, you get 300 back. This is great for large donations, but the third parties get 20 and 40 dollar donations, and usually election years, not each year as a tax break. So the group actually ripping off tax payers are the two largest parties whos donors give them the largest donations, and usually every year. So instead of parties receiving tax money based on their ideas and people voting positively on it, $1.25 per vote per year, instead we have to subsidize the shit and shit light party to $600 a year for maximum contribution(or double if you throw in for your spouse) and its called more democratic.... And people believe this BS. That 1200 subsidy per family for the wealthy is nearly 1000 votes cast by a third party voter under the old system, without contributions. But this is more fair the shit party said. Moneyed interests ares more important than actual votes.
I dunno, if people saw only once video before they voted, I'd like it to be thejuicemedia's "Hung Parliament" or "Preferential Voting" videos so they understood how to vote strategically for good candidates, and direct preferences how they want, not how the "How To Vote" card tells them to..
I really hope you are being flippant. American government is the most undemocratic flavour of government ever created. 31 flavours of ice cream. 2 political parties. It is literally an autocracy.

Greetings from Germany and EU gov, we additionally recommend adjusting the minimum percentage of votes required to get into parliament. That way, if a party is too small to make the cut, those voter's seats go - you guessed it - directly to the big ones, as god intended. Also make sure to never disclose the business ties of ministers and the various "side incomes" (our favourite name for bribery here) of parliamentarians.

Lmao, in our school, they try to teach us that not having an absolute majority is a really bad thing. As a guy who lived in germany for 3 years, I can tell u, it's way better to not have an absolute majority.
I remember being taught that, and then after figuring out how power dynamics worked, was like "No its good because then the corruption has to hit all the parties to get what it wants instead unilaterally infecting one".
Like literally this is what happened in Poland and it took 8 years and sheer fucking luck to get to the stage where they can't form a government and yet they're still trying and there is a phantom of pre-term elections hanging in the air. If they got a third term in this shape, they would just cement it the same way Australia wants to.
Germany's system is so much better. I mean I don't think their politicians are, but the rules set is much less of a clusterfuck. If one party gets an actual majority of support then it can claim a majority of power. Not like here where they just hand absolute power to parties that are marginally ahead but still far from a majority of the vote.
What honesty? Truth! WTF! I can see the these videos vanishing quickly and the platforms claiming they never existed! Corporations won’t stand for government honesty!
A lot of countries have coalition governments, where the conservative party doesn't care much about who the junior partners are as long as they don't gang up on them. A few countries have one party with a majority by itself so all other parties are limited to making policy proposals. Those tend to be surprisingly stable. They also tend to be called dictatorships (or democratorships if someone is feeling clever). And some _are_ (military) dictatorships. And there's one absolute monarchy. The form of government is unrelated to the government's policies, but to how entrenched they are. Unsurprisingly, where the same politicians stay in power, the policies don't change either, for better or worse. I have no idea what is going on with the Zapatistas. Anyway, the Janus party system is widespread in the Anglosphere, but not outside of it.
Some people are enjoying to be fucked by their parties so much they even want more than two doing that simultaneously. Bend over a little bit more and prepare your anus for more than two!

Applies to Canada perfectly. Every party keeps promising voting reforms to have proportional vote, but once they’re elected, they refuse to implement it because it might actually make them lose power (Canada’s Liberals and Quebec’s CAQ both did this within two years).
Canada can't talk, Justin Trudeau shouldn't even be Prime Minister, how does someone get the lowest amount of votes, yet remain in power?? That's a pretty big red flag, like Russian levels of red flag.
I remember in 2019 when the Liberals were like "we'll make Museums free!" and the Conservatives were like "We'll make camping free!" truly just one party pretending to be two that "disagree" with eachother...
The only actual democracy is a direct democracy, at least thats my opinion. The only country to have this sort of system seems to be switzerland, which does WELL for itself. But of course, our governments don't want us to know about this.
Honestly, this as works for so many different countries, not just Oz. UK and US also have the corrupt two party shittery that needs to be for rid of. Keep up the good work!
What’s even more amazing is we have a proportional voting system that should be way better than the systems in the UK and US - and yet somehow we end up with exactly the same type of corrupt shitheads running the country
In an Aussie court case back in 2017 a judge ruled that calling the Prime Minister (then Tony Abbott) a c*nt is not offensive under Australian law, and that the prime minister should not be above being called a c*nt just because of their job
Holy hell, I was stunned when you mentioned the bipartisan deal to screw over the minor parties. Along with anti-protest laws, they've been doing the same things here in Argentina, and so many countries. It almost seems coordinated.
They learn from each other and we keep letting them get away with it, minor parties and independents seem to be the only chance we have, most of them are dodgy as well though.
@@Skobeloff... The very political system fosters corruption and subservience to our economic elites. Minor parties could help in the short term, but they'll be corrupted eventually, if they aren't already. Can't win an election without wealthy backers. The only way out I can see from this is, either to replace our current economic system for one that is more democratic (socialism), or democratize our political system (lottocracy, participatory democracy, etc). Until then, we'll have to live like this.
THANK YOU! This is happening all over the world! Ausis not alone in this, UK, Belgium, Germany all implemented these laws... 'to limit foreign donations' but we all know why.
A video on what happened to The Australian Democrats would be interesting, one moment they were "keeping the bastards honest", the next moment they were apparently sleeping with the bastards, and then they all but vanished.
Mr Mitchell History might do such a video. The essence is that they didn't relay enough to their voters that they were going to do a deal with Howard on GST, so their voters thought "what's the point" and most moved to supporting The Greens.
Easy.. A minority 10% party (like the Greens now, the "protest" vote) tried to "play Government".. Agreed to ONE deal with the Devil (John Howard) to introduce the GST.. Absolutely ignoring their base.. Lasted barely one election after that..
I do a lot market research on RUclips. Juice Media gets more comments per single episode than the vast majority of other Channels serving any topic or interest. Over 4000 comment in a 6 month period. Excellent.
Fun fact: in the USA it's very hard to register as a third party in New York state I have read...so the two party system is alive and well in the USA as well.
The winner-take-all voting system basically guarantees results ultimately settle on two sides: the one winner, and the collection of all losers. The Australian Parliament has to add limits on competitors on top of it because preferential voting allows for third parties to sneak past.
It seems the one counterweight Australia has against this is its use of preferential voting (both what would be RCV/IRV and STV here), which I would credit with making the third party opposition an actual electoral possibility. Seeing how we don’t really have even that in the U.S… I guess it shouldn’t be surprising why Australia is closer to bucking the system than we are.

The revolving door of Labor/Liberal opportunity really needs to stop. I really think of our Australian political system as, like in China, a ONE Party system, but with a “dichotomous face”. Cheers

It is very much a one party system. If you only had the policies to go by you could't tell Labor and Liberal apart. I always thought Labor was supposed to represent the working class. Now they stiff the blue collar workers by letting in 600,000 immigrants to appease big business.
Mark Zuckerberg was in a podcast with joe rogan and said the ibf approached him to squish the laptop story. In a survey of 1,000s of biden voters, 12% said theyd have voted trump had they heard about the laptop. And USA has the voter fraud in Pennsylvania I think. And Stacy Abbrams has said " undocumented " people should be able to vote. And she lied about why she lost, Dont walk run productions explained it. And Republicans support the electoral colledge. Personally, I'm pro voter ID pro popular vote.
Thank you for communicating this so effectively. It's important it's widely understood. The major parties don't care to share this, for obvious reasons. Lack of transparency, obfuscation of the truth = strategy.

I get that it's a full-time gig tryna deal with the crises and catastrophes political, economic, military and religious elites have created for our species and life in general, so it's difficult to mesh people's schedules, but there's a magic between Ms. Burbidge and Ms. Wilson that transcends the ages. In Canada, where, hypothetically, we have a third-party option, we're more or less down to a timid kid whose time is well gone, and a professional stooge who's never had a real job in his life.
Yeah, the current selection of "leaders" here is such a shit-show. Only two have ever formed government, but when every election is a choice between mediocrity and disaster, parties do not actually get better, they just keep trying to leverage their bullshit sales pitch into absolute power which they do not deserve. First Past The Post voting is an abomination, but politics in the "anglosphere" generally has really degraded into a troll parade.
People have always said Pauline Hanson is a nut job, because MSM have always told them so. She has been calling out government corruption since day dot, and everyone ignored her! Look where we are today.....I think it's time to give her a go.
Voting for Independents is like herding fkn cats.. One trick ponies who are experts in zip.. NONE of them have any expertise in fkn Governance.. Or International Diplomacy, or Economies of Nations. Or anything of actual substance.. The Teals were voted in ON ALP POLICIES.. Just they couldnt vote for the ALP in those Liberal seats, so they voted Teal.
Great to have both Zoe and Ellen on screen together, even if it's tough to keep up with them sometimes. So many politicians seem addicted to the power to make rules (and punishment), as we have also seen in the USA. The idea of holding power at all costs then becomes paramount. Every campaign reform policy is subservient to this addiction. The money spigot must be turned off.
And here I thought I KNEW about politics. Now I am discovering through this Educational Channel that every time I think I know something the rules have changed, or the plan was re-planned, or the shit just happened again. Thank you ladies. XX

True and it's been that way for a while now. We get the illusion of choice,no more,no less.
It seems the one counterweight Australia has against this is its use of preferential voting (both what would be RCV/IRV and STV here), which I would credit with making the third party opposition an actual electoral possibility.
