  • This is a powerful video it maybe confronting to some!!! Sam struggles with things we don't understand, it is a heart breaking part of his life as it is beyond our control. We actually struggled with the decision to show this footage, but after alot of discussion decided that his struggle is also part of our journey.

Hoping you are getting some supportive services and respite. What great parents you are. This is a very common situation that is rarely shown in the media. Thank you for having the courage to post so others can learn. I agree that he is very frustrated. He may have had an itch he couldn't articulate, or a headache, or subclinical seizure activity, it's difficult to tell since he isn't talking. I know this scenario all too well. I live it everyday with my son. Don't give up. There is hope.

It’s neither a curse or a blessing. It can be a gift because you can have lots of different traits and skills unique to neurotypicals. It does’t deny the fact that it can be hard to have Autism.
Remember that it’s a spectrum. Not all Autistic people are like this boy. He has severe Autism which is difficult and hard to live with. Lots of people with Autism are able to speak fine and not all have violent meltdowns.

One of my autistic, non-verbal students was working with me on Friday, when he started to point and make a raspy vocalization. I thought he could hear the children in the other room watching videos and dancing, so I said, "Oh you hear the children next door." Then, I directed him back to the task. A few seconds later he made the same sound and pointed again. I asked, "What is it? What are you pointing at?" I couldn't figure it out. So, I directed him back to task again. Finally, he made the raspy sound once more and did the sign for water. (three fingers for the W and touching his mouth) I looked across the table and there was a full cup of water. I handed it to him and he drank several large swallows. How powerful it is to be able to communicate and be understood. Perhaps Sam can learn to use pictures, a tablet, or signs to allow him to communicate his needs, wants, feelings, etc. I think he calmed down when he heard you all were going to lift the anchor and go back. I think that is what he was trying to say..."I don't want to be here. It's too much for me." Once he knew he was going back home, the emotion just came out of him.

I have no idea what is in store for our future and it hurts me every day. My daughter has fits every once in awhile after over stimulation( the beach, birthday parties). But she kisses me and hugs me all the time so I thank god for that.

So many heartless idiots that know nothing leaving nasty comments.... this is a meltdown, it is not how these imdividuals are in regular basis, that is a person who has feelings emotions, laughs, hugs and has own choices and preferrences, this is just to show a meltdown. My son is autistic and gets meltdowns once in awhile but in general he is absolutely sweet and smart and loving. I cannot believe someone would say something like getting rid of him! What if it was your child would any condition make you love him less? God gives you a child you take care of him... come what may

Jane Vrolijk I dunno. I was a nanny for an autistic kid and he did this stuff all day long every single day. I tried everything. I would offer him different food items, different drinks. I would turn off lights and music trying to give him a break from it. I would turn on lullabies, I would read to him.... nothing worked. He was a nightmare. When I would think he would finally calm down... he would sit down and appear to be looking at a toy.... then he would calmly walk over to me and want a hug.... I would give him a hug and he would bit my arm super hard which would break my skin and bleed. And then run away screaming and throwing things. It got to a point where I was covered in bite marks and bruises all over my body. I would not allow him to hug me or sit next to me out of terror of him hurting me. I was patient and kind to the 10 year old child and he would assault me every single day. He also broke the tv, punched holes in the walls, broke the staircase bannister... and many other things.

I watched this today July 3rd, 2019 and I cried my heart out for this young man and the innocent parents. The thing is that the young man is seriously struggling. The parents thought he was going to have fun sailing, little did they know they were actually " torturing" him. I am a mother of an autistic non- verbal, so I know. Autism and waves especially " micro and radioactive" from the ocean seems silent to atypical people ( that is people that do not have autism). Unfortunately to autistic, it is KILLING! What atypical people don't hear or see, autistic people hear and see them. We don't hear, see, feel, etc the same way. The sea is ROARING in this young man's ears and he could not tell the sweet parents, who meant well for him since he is non- verbal. I learnt this in a hard way too. Not that you should not take them out into large body of water, but the deeper you go the worse it progresses for the autistic resulting in serious SENSORY OVERLOAD! Seating by the edge of large body of water is soothing for them. But sailing INTO the Water is TORTUROUS! These are wonderful parents but did not know that sailing increases sensory overload. I learn it hard too. Many innocent mistakes we make as parents to these wonderful angels on earth. Mind you, autistic people like water, but sailing is a no, no. I hope I help other innocent parents who might be considering taking their Angels ( that is what I call them because that is who they are, I mean autistic people) on a sail. GBY all.

But I still think the person suffering the meltdown's approval is needed to share as it is very personal. Even if the person is nonverbal. There are a lot more ways to communicate besides just words.

I had him keep watching and try and get him to see that others feel frustrated like him, but could he tell me why? He said"It is his brain...It hurts." Thank you for sharing the truth of autism. But i can't just 'stop' when it starts annoying anyone. But even my own parents say the same stuff to me when I'm having a meltdown. It's so upsetting being out of control AND being reminded at the same time your annoying your family AND they don't understand at all 😕 these parents are awesome

I am taking care of my 68yr old uncle with autism. The older they get the more difficult it is. The doctors tell me there isn't any help for him. He screams & run his head into the walls daily. I removed him from state custody because they had his eye hanging out of the socket but refuse to tell me what happened. After $5500 in attorney fees to get him to safety, I'm exhausted. The meds that use to work on him doesn't anymore because state doctors never checked his medical records & prescribed new psych drug. The doctors say that psych drugs permanently altars the brain. So they basically made him worse. Now because of his fits, my uncle is not allowed in the doctors office waiting room. The doctor see him in the back seat of my car. It prevents him from attacking other patients. I told the nurse I needed help. She said what do I prefer dark or clear? I don't even drink. Maybe I need to. Well done to the parents in this video. You guys are great supporting him & each other.

Not that I expect this to reach anyone appropriate, but in case I'll put it out there.....
Parents (or anyone else really) PLEASE understand that when a meltdown happens it is not something that can be stopped. There's too much anxious energy built up and it has to pour out. Restraining is only going to cause further distress. Touching at all, depending on hypersensitives, can make it worse. All the crying, screaming, stomping, hitting, etc. is how we work out the excess energy to a point where we can cope again.
The best way you can help is learning what adds to their overload and help them avoid those things and situations as much as possible as a preventative measure. Meltdowns may seem like they're triggered sometimes by the stupidest smallest things, but what you see from the outside is just the last of dozens or more of things, sometimes built up over months or even years, finally being the thing that's just too much. Providing your loved one with the tools to deal with getting rid of the excess energy when meltdowns happen is another valuable way you can help. Grounding techniques are one such valuable tool. It often takes a bit for us to gain enough control and awareness to put them to use but they can help a lot coming out of them.
And please, never act like this is at all within the control of the person. It isn't. Don't act like it's a huge deal either. Yes, they're horrible to watch and assure you much worse to go through, but honestly the shame and embarrassment afterwards is often just as bad or worse.
I'm a 44 year old male diagnosed with ASD. I deal with meltdowns regularly and some notably worse than this.

Hello - Thank you for sharing this. I wonder who was doing the filming nd if he felt comfortable with her especially Did your son experience sensory overload from an insecure ground (ie: the water)? Just also wondering if there was a trigger? There are some cruel comments below which are very ignorant and uneducated ones,. I have a son with severe autism and most of our lives are constantly trying to find triggers. But yes you are brave to show the challenges each person with autism faces and also the impact within their families. Put bluntly "it's too people out there". I also see his chest from heavy breathing indicating his physiological experience - further adding stress and fear. Bless you guys. Are you Australian/NZ? what are the services like there? I see he lets you wipe his tears...our son won't do this yet - he sees no comfort from closeness...yet... Best wishes from England x

I sympathize what you cope with everyday. I watched a documentary TV show on autism. In the show, they talked about how autistic brains are wired differently from normal people, some form of autism is called savant syndrome where the patients develop special abilities due to their brains unusual wirings. One savant can see different colors when hearing different musical notes. That obviously is a mix-up between his optical and audio nerves in his brain. They showed one woman who recovered after suffering from autism for 35 years. Once she has come out of the condition, she was able to tell others what went on in her head and why she did what she did while she was autistic. She said her hearing was extremely sensitive, any slight sound actually caused her extreme physical pains. Apparently her hearing is wired to her pain center. The way she coped with her sensitivity was to rock back and forth to distract herself from the sounds in an attempt to cut off all external stimuli and hence the typical autistic symptoms of total disconnection from people around her. I have watched couple of videos of what the medical professionals labeled as autistic rage. To my eyes, these kids including your son are not in rage. They seem to be in pain. They hit themselves probably because the physical pains are able to numb the even greater pain inside their heads. So the hitting, rocking and shutting off are most likely defense mechanism against something much worse than what you can see and they are unable to tell you. If the doctor can find a way to block those triggers, they may stop doing what they do. I saw in some other case where medical marijuana was able to help. Perhaps some other medications that numb their super sensitive sensory would have same effects.

Does Sam kick others? I am just curious as to why his shoes are removed. I know with the very young children I've worked with in IBI we take off their shoes so that they don't hurt so much when they kick us...but also so they have a natural consequence to kicking, that it hurts them to kick too.

As a human we love and nurture our children and will go through anything and do anything for them and love them unconditionally and just because they may be different than a "Typical" child or person may be does not mean they are not human and do not have emotions and feelings ....you know what why am i even wasting my time here

I feel bad for the families that have to deal with autism and as the last resort the family has to give up their daughter or son over to the state because there are no alternatives for them financial trouble hits the family pretty hard or insurance won’t cover services as needed

my brother Daniel is autistic but doesn't scream randomly like that or hit anyone, you can still have conversations with him and I'm glad i can still talk to him and laugh with him and all that. But it is still hard to talk to him because he has a very short attention spam. He only really screams when you upset him. Im glad he's not as bad as this guy though because it would be heartbreaking not being able to talk to my own brother. It must be very upsetting for you to not be able to hold a proper conversation with Sam.

I get updates from my cousin who says he's worser then ever too violent he got removed from his special school because he was a danger to the other kids and he's bigger and taller then them. We have two kids soon to have four and I wouldn't want him near them. Two of my kids are 9 years old girl and 1 year old boy and soon having twins he's too dangerous he could kill someone light. I blame my dad he stuffed him too big and fat.
