Being old school arm wrestler when you pulled out in the loosing position you automatically disqualified, so when it comes to the strap,I believe in total hand strength! Guys figured out it gave them a second chance, and relied on the strap to kind of hang on, and get another chance. But then they went to double elimination. Back then you could possibly be 2 up, 2 out !
The photo at the end with Devon and Brzenk combined could almost actually be a real life person, lol. On that note, the picture of Larry and Allen was the thing of nightmares.

John has always said he very rarely trained his left arm in his arm wrestling career yet Devon had the best left arm on the world for quite a while! Well arm wrestling without straps is like 50% hand 50% arm. With Straps its sorta like 25% hand and 75% arm. Johns hand is one of the best in the game. So the strap takes some of that away.
