What annoys me is people claim that now a days cosplayers are so cringe. People would tackle each other, use non-skin-safe glue, smear body paint absolutely everywhere, we won’t even talk about the hotel damage. Stranger Things and Danganronpa (now a days) is TAME compared to what it used to be

Cosplaying has helped me with my social anxiety. When I'm cosplaying, I feel more like the character and it gives me a boost of confidence; especially if it has a mask of some sort. Cosplaying has also given me an excuse to create ocs that I wouldn't have created otherwise. It's a hobby that wouldn't give up for anything in the world.

The reason why I cosplay is because it's another way I can express my creativity and feelings, and I like making my own costumes. Back in middle school I began making my own costume and LOVED how it came out. Ever since then, I've been making my own costumes. How it expressed my feelings is I can create a character that is a visual representation of my fears and self-loathing issues.

I was very shy growing up I wouldn’t talk to anyone outside my small friend group and I didn’t really have much confidence in myself. But as I got older and entered college I found that my college had an anime club and I decided to join and I met some amazing friends that I’m still friends with today. And slowly but surely I was breaking out of my shell, and then I discovered cosplay and my confidence grew and I met so many people and I’m so grateful to have met the friends I have now cosplay has really changed my life for the better and I’ll continue to do it for the rest of my life.

I had it muted when the video started and I totally thought you were picking your nose.
Anyways, the reason I started cosplaying was for good old gender euphoria. Growing up trans made me have a lot of issues with my body and my agab (assigned gender at birth). When I first got to cosplay a female character it felt so freeing, and like I could finally see myself as who I wanted to be. There was definitely a lot of cosplay I wore that I knew nothing about the series or character, but I liked the aesthetic. That, or because it was the cheapest thing I could find that actually fit me. 😅
Now I mostly do it as an expression of my love for a character or a series. Especially if it's a gender non-conforming character because those are the ones I relate to the most.

Man I know hyperfixation varies with anything but for me I'm on the autism spectrum and an artist so it usually becomes my outlet for a very long time. I'm responsible with it but it shows how much I love it since most money goes to it Cosplay wise. Now I know not everyone likes to play the character but for me acting as the character much like stage acting gives me confidence because it doesn't feel like me. This stays at events but I still wanted to say it since you brought up the other side of it where most people don't play the character much If at all. I'm not so extreme that I'll be an asshole if I'm playing a villian like DIO but I'll take the fun bits people like if people ask for a pic or something.

When you are not really happy with yourself and your life, it's super cool to just switch to a character with a cool life, character, etc. Or playing the bad guy for a day.
Hyperfixations are also a big thing for me. I just want to devour everything there is and I can become a character from this series? Even better. I want to be part of my Hyperfixations.

I like cosplaying because I love making things, but also it helps me come out of my shell and get better with interacting with others. I’m autistic so I’m not the greatest when it comes to navigating social situations but once I put on a cosplay I get a boost of confidence and can have conversations for daaayyysss. I think it’s because people perceive you as that character and they get so excited to see you and it feels nice to see someone become so happy because of something you put time, effort, and money into, and also you get to talk about how much you love that character and media :) great video by the way!

I'm want to cosplay for the first time at a con I'm wanting to go to, my reason? I love costumes. I've always loved costume stuff (Halloween is my fav for this reason) and I discovered cosplay when I was younger but didnt really have the ability to go to cons nor make costumes. Now, I have a decent sewing ability, drawing, 3d printing stuff. I'm gonna make it something I do more often. I went to a con for the first time this weekend and really want to do it more. So I'm trying to make it a minute frequent thing I do ^^

Another great video. Always great to hear your take on things like this.
So, I started cosplaying in '06 because a girlfriend had heard of a little convention that had gone on for a few years. I was immediately excited for the idea. I already loved Halloween, having done a lot of elaborate (for a child) costumes, and the Renaissance festival. On top of that, Toonami had started expanding and was a nice escape. We both loved Bleach, so we did a couples cosplay as Ichigo and Rukia, myself carving a massive freaking sword out of wood. We loved it, and I got adopted into a crew. Ran with them for years before I had to step away for a while and focus on my career. Never stopped wanting to make cosplays, but I just couldn't for the longest time. Even getting back to working at a convention saw me doing just simple suits with an accessory or two.
Lately, though, I've been going to events that are hosted by friends of mine every month at a club. Each month is themed, so it's been feeding my desire to get back into it. As such, I'm finally going to do my first full build. Darth Malak from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Everything from scratch, except, of course, the lightsaber. (Star Wars, especially the Old Republic Era has been a hyperfixation of mine since KoTOR first came out)

As a high functioning Autistic creature? I will hyper fixate also. (Mainly on Characters/series..) Yet for me? It is an art form also (I am an artist/photographer.) and feel like it is the one time I am able to express my creative self without much issue socially. It has somewhat assisted with being more social.. yet I am yet to find my real ''friendship'' tribe of folks. I RP with people online with comfort fandom most of the time... it helps big time... especially when you don't have any real life friends -_-,
I love Cosplay as one of my main hobbies. :)

I'm currently working on a cosplay right now as the video went up. (*long comment ahead*) It's my third one, and also it's just over a year since I first started cosplaying, and it has been such a rewarding experience. I love the act of making a cosplay, dissecting a design and building it back up with my own hands, seeing it come together is a great feeling. A few years ago, I was incredibly insecure and desperate to "fit in", in contrast to how I feel about myself now. The idea of dressing in character in front of thousands of people at a con would have been excruciating back then, so doing it now makes me feel proud, and happy about how far I've come. This is going to be my first male character cosplay. I identify as female, but since coming out as lesbian I've been experimenting with gender presentation so I'm really exited. (The cosplay is humanised Shadow the Hedgehog lol) those are just a few reasons why I cosplay.

I have hyper-fixation, especially for Power Rangers. I have other fandoms like Marvel, Star Wars and Transformers, but Power Rangers is my comfort series. I’ve always struggled with finding a girlfriend, and my stance with one girl is unclear, so Power Rangers and dressing up as the Red Ranger comforts me.

I started cosplaying after I made an Aliens Colonial Marines costume for Halloween 2017,it was not the best but I made their assault rifle from a Nerf gun, very similar to what is seen in the 1986 movie and games.I would later buy an outdated PASGT vest and alice rig,and they became part of my Aliens CM cosplay.I was recently at the 2022 Silicon Valley Comic Con and one of the game developers of the latest Aliens game (came out in 2021,forgot the name!) was there and really liked my Aliens CM cosplay! I like to cosplay characters from science fiction and horror movies and games, and just like you said that you cosplay as characters you relate to,I do the same. One characters I want to cosplay as is Captain Dax (a young Captain Dax!) from Starship Troopers 2,that's one science fiction character that I relate to (off the top of my head).Another reason why I cosplay is because I was going to join the United States Marine Corps but I became out of the age limit just as they started bringing in recruits again,I do powerlifting too so I have the look of a Marine and I have a very creative side to me so I decided to cosplay as these science fiction military characters.Halo,Aliens and Starship Troopers are the series I would cosplay characters from.Another hobby I do is piece together outdated U.S. military uniforms with airsoft guns, known as milsim, similar to cosplay, look at my pic here, that's half of an Operation Urgent Fury U.S. Navy SEAL uniforms.Halo,Aliens and Starship Troopers is my cosplay territory.

i personally have been cosplaying for about three and a half years, and it has given me so much joy that i can create things for my hyper fixations (typically of characters) and it has taught me so much. i do photography, makeup, and dressmaking. so much that i have learnt from cosplay has really helped with other fields of my life. i find that acting is an escape for me, so when i put on a cosplay, i don't have to worry about me and what i need to worry about. instead just what the character feels. honestly cosplay has given me so much confidence :>
thank you for making this and bringing awareness to why people do it and what cosplay is as a whole, as some people have asked me questions and have had strange assumptions, like it being cringy or sexual.
thank you, and sorry about the essay haha :>

Hi Anya, I'm new to this channel and to cosplay and I have a question.
My friend and I are going out for a photoshoot the day before halloween, I'll be wearing my cosplay of the TF2 Pyro, and she'll be going as a pink unicorn. I'm worried about getting into trouble with the police, since the costume has a prop flamethrower, grenades and gas mask, and is overall fairly threatening.
I hope the fact that my friend is a unicorn will help people understand it's just a costume, but I'm having second thoughts on going out in public. What do you think I should do?

    • @AnyaPanda
