As someone who wanted to hone my skills, this is a much needed advice i need to remember. I have been curious about Animation, 3D Blender, Procreate, Drawing Art Anatomy, Video Editing , Graphics and Design. And it feel so overwhelming to a point that I just work on things on my comfort zone which is Video Editing. I need something refreshing advice like this! Thank you for this, Mimi. I am inspired by your work
I’m learning to draw and I’m learning to just keep drawing . I realise at the age of 55 nothing comes instantly. I’m turning off that negative voice in my head . Your video has been a really encouraging watch. New subbie 🎉 Thankyou for sharing your wisdom x
I love the tip to use scrap paper to practice art! I always struggle with starting because of the fear of the art not turning out beautiful or amazing which takes the fun out of it. This video was very encouraging!
I think there are often many hurdles that hold beginners back and you brought many of them to light. As an ex art teacher (studio art) many of my students compared their efferts to those who had been creating art for a very long time. Many remember that one little criticism or mocking behavior from childhood. Too many children are told how art is to be. Trees are green, the sun is yellow, don't color outside the lines. Self expression was dictated to them. To just begin, to just let things flow. Don't look at it through the eyes of another. No one has to see your work unless you choose to share it.
The fact that we need to practice to get better is something I obviously know, but still struggle with because I put so much pressure on myself to make something good. But a while back, I was just doodling stick figures while on the phone with my dad and ended up figuring out how to make stick figures look like they walk, so that was a valuable lesson about the importance of practice to learn. And maybe I'll feel proud of my progress if I keep "bad" practice drawings in my sketchbook. I love looking back at progress I made with language learning so why should I hide all my previous drawing efforts instead of also appreciating that I'm learning?
My biggest advice is this: Don't be afraid of failing. You will 100% fail. That's part of it. And then you examine your failure, and you think... hm I could tweak that here, that doesn't look right, that arm should be like this, that color isn't quite right, and then next time, you make those adjustments. That is 100% how you improve. Fail, be self aware, and make deliberate changes.
Thanks Mimi for this video, great for the start of a new year. I love the tip of collecting scrap paper for sketching on. I am trying to practise skills in Procreate, but might actually kickstart myself a bit on a scap pile first:) Even a blank procreate file "scares" me a bit :)
I remember as a kid i actually enjoyed drawing. Then in highschool I had an art teacher give me a 6 (barely passing grade) on a dog I had drawn. I remember I thought I had done a good job and I was pretty proud of how it turned out...but no I got a 6 because the dog was too fluffy compared to the photo reference we had to draw from 😢... It sucked the joy out of art for me right then and there... didn't draw in my free time either... even threw away that drawing from school... Now many many years later I feel like I want to like art again but I just can't bring myself to go through the effort. I don't think that art teacher ever realised how many people he turns off from art..or maybe he took enjoyment out of making kids feel like they were utter failures.
Thank you sooo much! I love the idea of doodling on papers which would go in the trash. And the point of thinking about animals or architectre. I will take my artsupplys with me to work today. And I will draw some things that around me in my break. 😍 Or write a list with things that comes to my mind. xox
Regarding the idea related to draw on random papers outside of the sketchbook is really helpful, actually... And It happens to me a lot... the final result is so much better than when I draw on my sketchbook directly and I hate this 😂 because then, I have to paste the piece of paper or redo again the same on the sketchbook... I do not understand why
I know you use prismacolor pencils, but what are the other traditional tools you were using? I really like the look/texture of them. Thanks for the video!
Im drawing since i was little. (maaaaaaaaaaaaany moons ago) It used to be an escape. When i started sharing and comparing, i worked harder and harder to make great art and followed advices like "u need to be able to draw ANYTHING" like big guys with muscles. I dont like big guys with muscles. And I dont like perfectionized art. with many references and hard work i can do quite good things. And people liked them- But I never enjoyed making them. Also I have big self-loathing issues. So..making something just for myself is a loss too... just not worth it. I would like to draw again because I did like it in the past. but that is long gone. I just dont know if I am an artist whatsoever. After around 8 years of heavy antidepressants - i dont have the ability to visualize anymore. I see nothing and Im terrified of white paper (or screen-> digital) And if I draw how i enjoy it- no one will like it- or very little people- and if I draw how people would like to see it- i know i wont have any fun.... but i will bookmark this vid and watch again when i feel less sick. i really want to do something...
I understand what you are saying. Maybe if you stop sharing your art with other people for a while just so you can simply follow your joy and your interests - maybe then things will fall into place.
Thanks for sharing your story, when you're ready to give it a go again try starting really small and focusing on the positive outcomes you're getting out of it. Maybe you could try colouring in existing linework or colouring pages to avoid needing to come up with ideas for a while ✨
thank you all very very much! I had to stop sharing a while ago actually. and since then i dont draw anymore but I think I will be motivated thanks to the video and u all to find a style I really do enjoy and if i feel confident enough with this not to care for likes and such I will populate a new art account. if not i will just draw what I enjoy personally. its a good outlet. Maybe I will even join your community here for sharing, I never cared for likes much- they mean nothing. especially not for the artist (but only for the object) But the pressure in any case, real or perceived to post online takes over really quickly really, thank u all! I have new hope!
I don't think these are hurdles that hold back beginners. These are more hurdles that hold back anxious or sad people. If people are feeling like they need to be good enough before doing something, that is not how life works, that's the brain playing games with itself.
Have you overcome any of these hurdles before? Let us know if you have any tips to share! 💖

"It's proof that you're a practicing art student" actually made tears come into my eyes! Thank you for how KIND this video is.

So helpful! Also I love the way your prompts are printed on little bits of paper that you can mix and match. Genius!

I’ve been thinking about this too, sometimes the pressure to make it perfect really holds me back... Love your videos! ❤
This is perfect, perfect timing when I need it the most thank you! 💗

Yes! The blank canvas can be so daunting 😅
Thank you so much for this video! I been following you for a while and is always so inspiring!
I just come here to tell your thumbnail is beautiful😍
Can you share where you got the idea generator app?
Thank you for this 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for such a lovely resource in the random suggestion generator!! I also love the idea of using scraps to doodle and make art 💖

Love that! What a great time to get a little bit of drawing done and unwind from work a bit 💖

Sometimes don’t make art as often to prevent creative burnout when I have a drawing art idea, I straight way come back to my sketchbook or Procreate.
Thank you for the prompt generation link.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Can't wait to binge your content to discover more hidden gems

I'm using a mix of oil pastels, inktense blocks (sort of like watercolour crayons), coloured pencils and marker pens 😊
Wonderful helpful inspiring encouraging video!
Hi, can you tell me where you get that tiny sketchbook? Thank you very much 😊
It's a Hahnemuhle D&S Sketchbook 9x12cm, there's a link to it in the video description, I bought mine at a little art shop 😊✨
@MimimooIllustration Oh I don't look to description earlier, my bad, thank you!
