Drove these when I was at 19 Squadron at Bulford in 1972. Certainly drew the crowds on a run out. We did the Felixstowe to Castle Martin inn about 3 weeks. Most memorable apart from flattening the Severn Bridge was when a Mk 2 broke down on the hill in Marlborough. We were loaded and we pushed the broken down truck up the hill. 240 tons in all.
Hi Martin, I started in Germany 1978 so you are a little before me... please feel free to join out group facebook.com/groups/TankTransporters or register with us to meet the Tank Transporter guys some from 58 onwards docs.google.com/forms/d/1e4pnB1LNo7CJDjQLYT7_vD8P0Pv_hDIZo8LhJCw3vkc/edit
Water running down the dash when it rains.. just like my old Land Rover : ) Love the steering, he never once puts his thumbs through, must have been bitten : ) !
I'm glad you did. It brings back memories of riding them in the yard with Test Section at Fazakerley Engineering Company (FEC) (this one's a special though hence its plate). and down the M57 fully loaded with concrete. Thanks for posting it
Hello Ron have only just read your comments. Who did you work for when repairing Antars? I served my time in Fazakerley Engineering Co. And finished my time there in charge of overhauling the MK3 Antars. you are correct about the wormwheel damage, another cause was a lack of oil reaching the worm shaft bearings due to phosfur bronze building up on the sloping ledgers within the axle casing.
The massive weak link was the third diff front bearings, as there was not enough oil carried forward. The diffs also suffered damage from being tow started, the diff lock being stuck or intermittent ( which was largely cured by permanently locking the actuator arm, so open centre diff).
Bloody hell..Tony Daly. I remember you. I think you were a chargehand on the Antars while i was there. I was an apprentice electrician. Started in '79 and left in '83 when we were told the place was closing. Some great lads worked there....some nutters too! (i remember the Stanton brothers? haha. ). Hope you're ok.
Hello Steve. Yes you were on George Wongs team. And the Stantons yes Timmy would fight anyone. I left in 82 and went to work in Buckels garden center just up the road looking after all their vehicles etc. I am retired now living in Somerset. Hope all is good with you.
I'm fine thanks Tony. Since i saw your message this morning i've been trying to remember the names of all the other lads. Got about a dozen so far but 1983 was an awfully long time ago! Haha. Take care.@@tonydaly8685

That's some gearbox 😮😂
Can anyone maybe throw light on 'tank transporters 19 coy RASC ' based somewhere in Germany in the 50's ? Cheers
You grind it and I'll him it 🤣
Was that a triple de-clutch ❓
Is the green handle the range change ❓
You can't get enough speed up for 6th, down past the workshop, even driving solo!!
Tenji would be cussing you for grinding his gears.
Not Neal: its Adrian
Not a crime to cross your hands on the wheel, very heavy steering, need the leverage! maybe you don't do it on your driving test!
Makes the mk look tiny
I see what you saying now Dave... but check out my FB friends list and add him... he is Neil... lol
Typical British truck. Designed in the 17th century.
Slow not powerful and complicated. A failure in trucks world.
completely incorrect.
