As a young lad of fk knows how old, santa was good enough to bring me a Thorneycroft Mighty Antar one Christmas including low loader and a Chiefton Tank, my pride and joy for years to come, fast forward to 1988 after 87 storm, I now was a fully grown man in the timber trade up in North Yorkshire, Things were a bit on the quiet side when a good friend suggested I go down to Surrey to sort the mess out, this is when I saw my first Antar taking much of the narrow lane coming toward me, i flagged the driver down to have a gander at this wonderful beast, turned out he was a local tree surgeon, he had had this big truck only to pull large trees over, I never got his name, but reckon we could have been friends to this very day !!....I shall follow your journey with the Antar how long ever it will take....
Oooo very interesting this is the only one I’m aware of that went into the timber trade. We’re based in Norfolk not silly far from Surrey. This one was green with black wings for a while and then bright red. Oh and course the military green she wore in service. Maybe the same truck?
Benbow Bros timber in Shropshire had a 6x6 Thorneycroft for pulling big stuff. Immense amount of torque from a huge 6 cylinder engine an a powerful winch. Made a Matador look like a toy.
Agreed, it certainly calls for a series on you tube. Good luck with it, well worth the effort when you see the finished product! I remember seeing these in actual army use, usually on the A34.
RUclips just suggested Thornycroft Antar Episode 3, so i came to your channel to watch the first episode, and i have subscribed!! Keep up the good work, guys! i look forward to watching episodes 2 & 3 and other videos from your channel! I will admit i have a proper laugh at 2:26 your face was a picture!
Oh wow! I remember these as a lad, hauling tanks at Perham Down - made the load look like it was a toy to tow. Good luck with the resto - it'll be quite a rewarding achievement!
I'm really looking forward to this series, I used to watch these being test-driven past our school as just a driven rolling chassis in the 60s, the driver wore a crash helmet, and his seat was a wooden box! Have you contacted The ThorneycrofT Society yet? It's a shame the factory is now a Morrisons, but that's progress I suppose.
Naturally I subbed, you have The Mighty Antar! Rolls-Royce straight-eight 16L engine @ 2 Litre per pot! lol. The Mighty Antar was a sheer torque machine!
good luck.. these used to be refurbished at a company called fazakerly engineering in liverpool.. i actually have a 4 way flasher switch in my shed i think.. used to have a piston as an ash tray.
From across the pond, I'd say yourproject may rival that of the SV Tally Ho, Sampson Boat Works. Looking forward to your efforts. My friend from St. Ouen Jersey said you probably jestered the train engineer with a reverse "Winny" salute. Narragansett Bay
If you’re restoring that beautiful beast then I’m definitely liking and subscribing. In fact I just did. Looks like a lot of work but worth it. Is it complete?
Definately a very worthwhile subject for restoration, a massive undertaking, so total respect Guys. It will be fascinating to find out, just how many parts are available, particularly on a truck that was never mass produced. I wonder how many are left in working condition ?? I can't wait to watch you start, and just how much help and advice you get. Good luck to all involved.
There’s only a handful left in working order. Parts are impossible to find! Definitely a lot of hard work ahead but to watch it drive out the workshop will be a sight to behold! Episode 2 in on the channel now, episode 3 will be up tomorrow!
My uncle used to drive these mighty Antars in the army .and I can remember as a lad him giving me a Dinky version for Christmas. If this one's petrol I hope you have deep pockets??
@tinkeringwithtanks That's not so bad? I can remember the stories he used to tell us about them! One was someone who said once ,so they only do 30 mph? He told us at 20 plus mph in one of the petrol V8s with a tank on the back it was like going down the fast lane on a motorway? Incidentally, he also drove an American Diamond T ,their version, and he said that was a fantastic Lorry! In many different ways!
Hope your videos will be worth watching unlike certain countries which film just for their own financial gain rather then showing and sharing the problems that occurred during this restoration🇮🇪.
So, it's not actually called; "The Mighty ANTAR" then? I've never known it as anything else! The main reason I know it, is because of the Dinky Toy model, with the Mk1 Chieftain on it. Even if the box didn't say it, (I don't know) I only ever knew it as "The Mighty ANTAR" and it is, truly mighty!
Simple question ... WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH IT ?? should be an interesting build !! But PLEASE GET SOME BETTER LIGHTS!! Most of what you showed was in pitch black !! Looking forward to the next one !!
Lighting issue is being sorted! I think it’s going to be a case of what the hell are we not going to do with it!! Haha! We have the correct trailer and a couple of tanks to load up!
I remember having a Dinkey Toys one 62 years ago , it was my pride and joy , with a Centurion on the trailer ! It'll be great to see her restored 😍😍😍😍
Absolutely a feature on the Antar
Done!

Definitely! When the going gets tough the tough get going!! She’ll be awesome when it’s done!!
Definitely needs to be a build video. Looking forward to more videos.
We completely agree! Next video will hopefully be out next week!
What about the Ferrets, any update on those.
The ferrets will feature again very soon!

You've got your work cut out guys, good luck! I shall follow your progress with interest.

Use to drive those, utter beasts, remember the speed warning, “do not exceed 24mph as severe damage will occur to the transmission”
Hats of to you!! Certainly had to be a driver to drive one of these! Not the place for a steering wheel attendant
I like the two class 66 loco"s going past .
This would definitely make a great series of Vlogs. Look forward to seeing how it progresses. 😎
Episode 2 in on the channel now, episode 3 will be up tomorrow!
Have found this channel today and subbed right away. Cheers

Thanks for the feed back! I’ll watch a few of theirs and put some videos together!!
Yes that would be great, their weekly Workshop Wednesdays are awesome

You need a Polish Mojo driver mechanic for that project and and a Polish eagle emblem and take her to Fallingbostel on tour!
Great
Liked and subbed. Looks like it would be fun to drive.
Definitely we all can’t wait!!
If you’re restoring that beautiful beast then I’m definitely liking and subscribing. In fact I just did. Looks like a lot of work but worth it. Is it complete?
Welcome aboard!!
Yes she’s very complete, hard work lies ahead but definitely worth it!!
Who would have thought that 4x tractor wheels have more grip that 4x BV tracks 😮 lol
i was surprised the bv didn't even try to move it!
I foresee a lot of time and a lot of money being poured into this project 😯😯
Shhhhh don’t remind us!! Aha! Definitely a worthy cause through
I would be most interested to see your progress on the Antar
Episode 2 in on the channel now, episode 3 will be up tomorrow!
Does C8SFL/R not stand for left and reverse crank rotation rather than the side of the injection pump? The Antar has the injection pump on the right.

Transmission temps,,,,,,,,,,,melting sun😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Is that 02eb05 the gas turbine chieftain I saw in the distance
It is indeed! She’s a permanent resident at The Norfolk Tank museum where you can even get inside it.

How much torque?

Torque is very much on or off, on when the engine is running and off when it’s not!!
hi, good luck with is, if you can get the parts and the windows,, its going to cost you,big time
But worth it when it’s done! Hell of a truck!
Why pink?? Libya???
Faded red, it wore a red paint job in a timber yard after leaving military service
