  • Let's talk about the bassbar:
    It is actually only a small part regarding the bassbar and its ideal position. But I think it might be useful to know.

    I've been watching the videos on the channel during the last month, and watched some of them a few times. But I watched this one for an hour and half again and again, while taking notes and examining violin plans. Thank you very much Mr. Russ, you literally destroyed some questions in my mind.

    Thank you so much again Edgar! I’ve been trying to maximize the sound of my violin, but since I can’t move the basebar, I then applied the recommended measurements by first alignment of my bridge to 328mm from top, and then move it sideways 1.5mm within the basebar and then fit the sound post opposite accordingly. The bridge appeared to be too much sideways towards the treble, so I reduced the width of the feet by 1mm on both sides, and moved it back sideways towards base side a bit. Now it sounds much better. Thank you!

    Thank you for making this video! It gives me an excellent basic knowledge about positioning and size of bridge to bass bar, so that I can discuss this with my luthier.

    Thanks for the advice. I would love to hear all that other stuff that you have to say about it, so please make more bass bar videos :-)
    So far I have entirely avoided touching the bass bars on the instruments I repair, but slowly I get more confident and start looking into the scarier areas. Right now I'm trying edge repairs on a really old beat up cello, so I have to start playing with varnish as well if I want it to be finished. And I do, because I think it might actually be a really good instrument that I will keep for myself to play.
    I'm pretty sure many of the (a bit cheap) instruments I work on could use a bass bar check, but I don't know yet how to do that. This has definitely helped a bit though :-)

    Thank you Maestro. I wish you were here to sort out why my A string on my Double Bass is a 50/50 chance to start under the bow. It spoils my enjoyment of the instrument. Unfortunately I live in a country with few Luthiers, and no Masters, so I watch you videos in the hope of trying to sort this out. Bravo!

    Hallo Edgar so i miss a part you say 3 circels iqual ok. but where comes the diameter from ?? The upper Holes of the F holes ??

    Thanks Edgar once again. You said the bass bar should runs parallel to the deepest string of the instrument. Do you mean E string for violin or A string for violas?.

    Shold I understand that a more slanted bass bar increases the stiffness of the top and makes response easier?

    Very nice video, Maestro. One important question, though. I'm not sure if I understand the part when you say that the ideal foot position for the violin bridge is 1.5mm from the bass bar. All the other sources on the internet say that the bridge foot should be exactly above the bass bar. But if I understand correctly what you are saying, you say that the bridge foot should be 1.5mm away from the center of the bass bar. Is that in fact what you were saying? Thank you...

    • @simon0yeung
      @simon0yeung Год назад

      My understanding is the outside edge of foot Is basebar +1.5mm

    Dear Maestro, I am a fan of you, I love your explanations, I am a learning-luthier from Venezuela in Malaga-Spain. I know that your videos are more oriented to musicians, but I would like to know your opinion regarding the appropriate height of the Bassbar in relation to the vaulted (curvature of the top- arch), many apply 10-12mm and others almost 14mm, I love your suggestion. Saludos desde Andalucía !!!! Other question, in relation at your draw the line of right position of the bassbar is taking for the side that face the C ?

  • @theangryluthier2244
    @theangryluthier2244 5 лет назад

    but, the line that you draw its the in face of the bass bar or the out face? thanks for all

    I have a question: what width do you use for the bass bar ? It should be equal Than sound post? (5.8 -6mm) greetings😀

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  5 лет назад +1

      I actually love to make the bass bar as thick as the soundpost. But when it comes down to instruments which I didn't make myself I just use my soundest measurements and that works out great.
      Consider that actually the really important point or position is the one "outside" or lets say the spot which is facing towards the C bout.
      all the best and thanks for your contribution here.

    So bass bar & sound post should be right at the mid below both bridge foot ?? Thanks first.

    About to Put tension when you glue the bass bar to the top: do you recomend it? What happens if not? Thank you greettings!!!
