Well the Sales were less just because at that time very few people could afford a expensive SUV like Safari. The people you are talking about (like us) who NOW have enough money to buy Safari, doesn't find this new Gravitas/Safari tempting enough....... It's like we all still love the Old CIVIC unlike the new one....
Same case with people shouting "made in India, Great Build Quality, not tin ka dabba". Top 5 selling cars of 2020 were all Maruti. In the end, money is all that matters (includes maintenance and resale value, initial on road prices are well covered by all car makers these days).
Mahindra Thar older gen also had very thin sales over a decade... But it doesn't mean we cant call old Thar as iconic... That didn't force Mahindra to make Thar 2020 as FWD, without 4x4 car
Yaa those 2% people also just want awd becouse its AWD and its cool but the people who use them are very rare amoug them..people in india dont want to take there car offroad very much even if the car is capable...
TATA Safari was one of my favourites during its time. It had its own identity. This car here, to me, seems just like a Harrier Plus/XL. Tata could have just stuck with Gravitas or used another name. And then brought the Safari with a design that matched its iconic predecessor.
Well done TATA, another great product.. Its high time TATA focusses on post sales service as well which is allright in pockets and definitely on the bad side for most occasions.. No stopping TATA then.. Only nitpicking now, a refreshed infotainment with crisper view would be very welcomed too..
As an automobile enthusiast, it really makes me happy to see how much Tata has progressed in terms of design and build quality. The new Safari (and Harrier) really do seem to punch above their weight.
Old safari was unbelievably awesome. I drove 1,50,000 km on it in a span of 3.5 years and what a car. I currently own hexa. Body on frame that I used in heavy load work. These cars are strong cars that save you in worst case scenario of accidents. New structure looks good but these rugged cars are the best choice in terms of space, safety and strength.(Tata safari old model with varicor engine and Tata hexa). Keep up the good work Autocar India. Love your efforts in each review.
The headrest and back of the third row is too close to the windshield / tailgate. I would not want any of my loved ones to be seated in the third row because of that, as they may get severely injured in case of a rear impact. Just looking at the pic of the third row from behind the car, this is a 4/5 seater, as far as I am concerned.
A like for safari and the way Nikhil has done it is just impressive he is becoming better and better when it come to journalism. he is now the best journalist of Autocar
Then u have not experienced the old Safari my friend take a long ride in the Safari drive it or even sit on rear seat then u will come to know what a safari actually is!!!
The fact that during the entire length of your review it's been compared to the Harrier & not the Safari Storme shows how much of a Safari it is. It's closer to the Harrier than it is to the original Safari, the one we all fell in love with.
Bcoz those vehicle were practical in terms of space and currently people want impractical but pleasure in space. But times change and tata has surely build a 3rd row to be happy off seeing Nikhil fitting comfortably in it anyone can be comfortable there.
I have used the Tata Safari in the year 2000. Reliability was a real problem. I shifted to Mahindra Scorpios and XUV 500s thereafter and I am very satisfied with their reliability. Mahindra vehicles have never let me down. I am seriously considering the 2021 Tata Safari, but have to still gain confidence on the Brand.
The new Safari is a good car, but it needs a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Hector Plus-level connected car features, full digital TFT LCD instrument cluster, electric hands-free tailgate, Level 1 autonomous features, triple-beam full LED headlights, LED fog lights, hands-free voice control for the sunroof, 2nd row door sunshades, etc. Should also beat Hector Plus in everything
Electronic Parking Brake !!!!!!! A great relief...... Those Jumbos from Harrier. Still no Electronic Tail Gate ? Kuch Na kuch to miss karna hai taaki Nazar na Lag Jaaye. Waah Tata Motors.....
"Tata says if there is enough demand, it could consider bringing out a Safari AWD", everyone start asking Tata for an AWD Safari, they will bring one out if there is enough demand!
I thing this car have 4 negative points..... 1 the android auto and apple car play should occupy full screen 2 the engine should have atleast 450nm torque 3 atleast 4800mm length so that after having spacious 3rd row still sufficient bootspace 4 a 4×4 option for offroaders.... And I believe it's not that difficult for tata to fulfill this negative points..... Elsewhere Safari is the best family car for space and comfort
that 4x4 was quite essential for the safari name; not impressed by tata, they have been saying for the past few years that they will bring it in harrier when the demands would be there, but have not done that yet. even a small ecosport have 4x4 but a humongous safari doesn't
For Me It is Great Car as i used to own tata safari 4×2 DICOR For Almost 9 Years.......3rd Row is Really Impressive as Previously it was not even suitable for kids........Not Up To the Safari Mark But Definitely Not Disappointing.......Great Work Tata
Amazing Car ♥️👌...but few things that I agree with, compared to the competition we do need a bigger and better screen, spy shots suggest that new xuv which will be it's biggest rival might have ADAS therefore Tata should already start working on it for a future update.
A very packaged & evolved 3 row SUV. Was a bit skeptical with the 3rd row. However, Nikhil is the best person to address it. He has given a Thumbs-up which clearly makes the last row of seats a winner for the Safari. It feels: 1. Premium. 2. Well built. 3. Comfy. 4. Good on driving, ride & handling. 5. Spacious (That's what it is introduced for). Also, that Sunroof blind gave a very, very premium & plush feel. Just the Oyster White Leatherette seats are a contradiction to the Safari, considering the tasks it is going to take on. A crystal clear video by Autocar India. ❤🤗🙏👏👏👏
Thank you Autocar for this review. I was extreme eager for this review as it's a flagship SUV of an indian brand. Tata Safari is , I think , one of the best and economic SUVs. With so much features and advanced functions , it will dominate the Indian SUV market. Thank you Tata for making such a premium yet robust SUV. Proud of you. Thank you.
Pls suggest MG Hector+ vs Tata Safari which is good as per self drive, low cost maintenance & good resale value. Which is good to purchase for car enthusiast as per young generation. Would appreciate your views on this
AWD or Rear wheel drive would be the best option. But bootspace seems very limited if all seats up. Need to extend the luggage part or roof mounted luggage carriers. Overall Tata motors given a well equipped products with competitive prices. It will rock the market for sure👍 thanks Autocar Reviews ❤️
An Indian car designed in UK built on a British platform with and Italian/American engine mated to a Korean gearbox. Truly global car. Naming it the Safari is a masterstroke. Well done TATA
Just thinking that what maximum exchange price can I get for my 1 year old I20 active... At that time, I was not able to buy safari, now I can by the grace of God. Always seen Safari as my dream car, hopefully it will be mine within next 2 months. Great review dear❤️❤️❤️
The architecture just do a justice for safari because the greatest offroader in world sharing it's architecture with the great offroader in India is just awesome
I've watched basically every manufacture on sale in the states. Guess I'll check out what India has been up. I really like this model. Captain's chairs + theater seating is an awesome combo.
We are awaiting the ELECTRIC version of the SAFARI with ADAS, 4WD, a length long enough for a comfortable 3rd row and an ample luggage space and the sunroof as usual
In 7-seater config, looked like the middle bench is not setup higher, like in 6-seater middle row? Blue color looked fantastic. The baige / off-white seats looks far more premium compared to 'sporty' black seats. Very spacious, interiors seemed very good quality. Will buy it.
I have currently booked the Tata Harrier XZA+. 7 Seats are not my requirement but second row recline adjustment can be a useful feature. Would you still recommend the Safari over harrier? Considering the other added features that Safari is offering. Is it worth paying the extra 1.6/1.8 lakhs (on-road difference). My biggest concern is the added weight and dimension change. How does it affect the driving dynamics when compared to the harrier. For instance, does this cause lower end lag and Body roll?
Tata focused on main things of a car. Good driving experience, good space for passengers, infotainment system is enough practical to use. So it's a nice suv in this price range
Always liked it and wondered when would TATA ever consider refreshing it and bring it in front row with likes of XUV or other similar cars in line up. Hope it does not gets into take-off mode like old one when full with passenger. Looks great
This is totally weird that people really didn't like the way Tata has named this Safari. When original Safari was there, no one cared about it and now, all of them come back speaking ill about its naming. Whatever it is, this is a very good competition to MG Hector+ and Xuv500
I brought XUV 500 and believe me Tata and Mahindra have improved hell a lot. One thing better in new safari compare to harrier is it's disc breaks for all wheels. 👍
Ventilated seat is a must and requires a next generation infotaintment system. I liked the new electric park brake and 18 inch alloys. I would like to get brown seats too.
Can you make a comparison between Tata Safari and Toyota Innvova? They seem to do the same job for me but want to know which car will be a better choice to live with over an ownership period of 10 years
IDIOT wat about rear diskbrakes, IRA connectivity, Electronic parking brake Tyre pressure monitoring system(TPMS) Electric parking brake Auto hold Bigger tyres Captain seats revised rear look, increase in height and length all these are not there on Harrier
Tata has again made proud by rejoice the Name Safari to this generation by introducing all new with Genuinely Proudly Name Safari. I wish i could have one; i will tour India Proudly. Safari is Diamond in cap.
Overall it's an pretty underwhelming effort by Tata to revive this nameplate, mostly the front end is a copy cat of the new Hyundai SantaFe overseas in the 5 seat configuration.
This new Tata Safari is immensely practical and extremely well made. I wish there were an AWD option and I also wish there were a little more of the Landrover Discovery DNA trickling in to the Harrier and Safari. This vehicle easily rivals the Endeavour and Fortuner and all of those wagons. Tata Motors have really come a long way.
Don’t worry we indians will keep those seats neat and clean by not removing those plastics which comes with it when u buy😀
Haha... So true ... Till the time plastic doesn't decompose 😂😂
samir! you're breaking the car.
So true lol
I don't think the guy who can afford this car won't think like that lol😅
Lol😂😂😂
Everyone be like- old Safari was a beast. No car like old safari and yet looking at its sales figures!!! Sigh.
Legends are not legends because of their sales figures or individual practicality.
Same case with people shouting "made in India, Great Build Quality, not tin ka dabba".
Top 5 selling cars of 2020 were all Maruti. In the end, money is all that matters (includes maintenance and resale value, initial on road prices are well covered by all car makers these days).
Only issue with old safari was reliability. Actually it was major😂😂😂
Mahindra Thar older gen also had very thin sales over a decade... But it doesn't mean we cant call old Thar as iconic... That didn't force Mahindra to make Thar 2020 as FWD, without 4x4 car
People who say they need AWD : 98%
People who actually buy AWD : 2%
Right
That 2% people are in lakhs
In this country of 100 crore people
4x4 bb
AWD sucks in mountainous areas, especially the Maruti ones 😂
Yaa those 2% people also just want awd becouse its AWD and its cool but the people who use them are very rare amoug them..people in india dont want to take there car offroad very much even if the car is capable...
TATA Safari was one of my favourites during its time. It had its own identity. This car here, to me, seems just like a Harrier Plus/XL. Tata could have just stuck with Gravitas or used another name. And then brought the Safari with a design that matched its iconic predecessor.
Absolutely
Hector's time is up 😀 . Tata and Mahindra (with new XUV 500) will finally edge out the Chinese.
Idk about that dude MG rs3 looks nice as well.
Tatas car with-
Land Rovers platform,
Fiats engine
Hyundai's transmission
Well they own land rovers so
Land rover is owned by Tata so it's Tata only
Just add Toyota ASS and reliability, No looking back.
Thats why its called Make in India 🇮🇳 🤣😂
Best of all worlds
Well done TATA, another great product.. Its high time TATA focusses on post sales service as well which is allright in pockets and definitely on the bad side for most occasions.. No stopping TATA then.. Only nitpicking now, a refreshed infotainment with crisper view would be very welcomed too..
tata won't just make car by ur requirement
Even presales showrooms and dealerships also
Exactly
And if not too much the instrument cluster too
It’s A car that will surely slow down the choice rush for Toyota Innova Crysta ... This one is a true value for money car .... proudly Indian 👌🏼👍🏼
A top notch work by tata ,safari looks proportionate from every bit . Robust ,sturdy & built to last safari is surely going to rock among buyers ...
As an automobile enthusiast, it really makes me happy to see how much Tata has progressed in terms of design and build quality. The new Safari (and Harrier) really do seem to punch above their weight.
I felt 3rd row has decent room...and the reviewer has heavy builted guy...
I have to say your English is immaculate
He is over 6 feet so 3rd row is very good for majority of the Indians who are 5'5
Builted 😅🤣😂
Hes 6'2 so its definitely good
Who would have thought that TATA would one day bring such beautiful machines to our roads! ❤️❤️
Now the Indian King is back on Road
But Look From Tata Harrier
This king is always road king
Old safari was unbelievably awesome. I drove 1,50,000 km on it in a span of 3.5 years and what a car. I currently own hexa. Body on frame that I used in heavy load work. These cars are strong cars that save you in worst case scenario of accidents. New structure looks good but these rugged cars are the best choice in terms of space, safety and strength.(Tata safari old model with varicor engine and Tata hexa). Keep up the good work Autocar India. Love your efforts in each review.
"Any soul searching missions to reclaim your life cannot be too extreme"
Well said, Nikhil
Yeah, loved that line
Hehe! Glad you spotted it!
This car is international worthy. Tatas should be made available everywhere.
Thumbs up for 3 rd row seats
The headrest and back of the third row is too close to the windshield / tailgate. I would not want any of my loved ones to be seated in the third row because of that, as they may get severely injured in case of a rear impact. Just looking at the pic of the third row from behind the car, this is a 4/5 seater, as far as I am concerned.
Really a real justice to 3rd row seats,
Now this is a car which can say yes I have a third row
A like for safari and the way Nikhil has done it is just impressive he is becoming better and better when it come to journalism. he is now the best journalist of Autocar
Woah! Thanks for the kind words :-)
3 Rd row is awesome and 7 seater version is the one to buy with automatic transmission, this 3 Rd row can rule this segment .
Ok dats a very roomy. Imagine this guy fit like this, Ave ind adult won't have any problem
Never liked anything about old Safari except for the name it's too bouncy. This, I would probably buy if I am looking for a 7 seater SUV.
Exactly
Then u have not experienced the old Safari my friend take a long ride in the Safari drive it or even sit on rear seat then u will come to know what a safari actually is!!!
Yes, it's bouncy, that's the reason we love Safari so much... Proud user of safari since 10 years (3 - safaris)
Ya it is good but just look at hector+ once you will surely chance your mind
I really appreciate what TATA had done with Safari. Miles To Go!
Tata needs to work on their infotainment system, needs to provide a big screen to compete others in all scenarios
The fact that during the entire length of your review it's been compared to the Harrier & not the Safari Storme shows how much of a Safari it is.
It's closer to the Harrier than it is to the original Safari, the one we all fell in love with.
Miss those Tata sumo and Bolero times when you can fit in as many as 10- 12 people and still have decent space for the luggage.
Bcoz those vehicle were practical in terms of space and currently people want impractical but pleasure in space. But times change and tata has surely build a 3rd row to be happy off seeing Nikhil fitting comfortably in it anyone can be comfortable there.
how do you get 10-12 people into a bolero plus luggage ? I even find it difficult to sit in the rear seat
Honestly was excepting more...... This was more like Harrier 2.0.....the old safari was a beast 🔥
Agreed 💯
What was wrong with the old lever brake?
really impressed by the last row seats, i think its the only suv with such spacious last seats which does not feel suffocating..
Seeing Nikhil recline in a chair melts my stress levels away!
Haha!
The guy was perfect for reviewing the Tata Safari & the Safari looks ravishing from every Angle.
"Tata says if there is enough demand, it could consider bringing out a Safari AWD", everyone start asking Tata for an AWD Safari, they will bring one out if there is enough demand!
Asking won't do the job. Sales figure would
Hexa AWD was also available but most people didn't preferred that... 4×4 variant..
I booked an harrier. Should I change my booking to the safari
Ofcourse! 3rd row always is a blessing especially in India.
Yes
Most epic Domestic-built King is back!
Good job TATA!
I thing this car have 4 negative points.....

2 the engine should have atleast 450nm torque

A crystal clear video by Autocar India. ❤🤗🙏👏👏👏
AWD needed from day one. That will make this a perfect buy at this price point.
AWD , has no real demand.
Completely agree
just a one touch front grill change makes it land rover Discovery..
What about interior??
Thank you Autocar for this review. I was extreme eager for this review as it's a flagship SUV of an indian brand. Tata Safari is , I think , one of the best and economic SUVs. कई वर्षों से *राज किया है भारतीय सड़कों* पर *टाटा सफारी* हर भारतीय का ड्रीम *एसयूवी*
It seems like a brilliant Machine. I think it is time to celebrate Tata for it for starting this decade with prospective products.
Pls suggest MG Hector+ vs Tata Safari which is good as per self drive, low cost maintenance & good resale value. Which is good to purchase for car enthusiast as per young generation. Would appreciate your views on this

An Indian car designed in UK built on a British platform with and Italian/American engine mated to a Korean gearbox. Truly global car. Naming it the Safari is a masterstroke. Well done TATA
If it is priced more than innova then it difficult to lead the chart.
Its also better than innova
Inova is way more pricy than this dear. The range is 19.40 to 29.5 and tye Safari top should end somewhere around 25 odd
Comparing apple with oranges 😄
INNOVA is MPV having specific buyers as its passenger vehicle not having SUV-DNA. So hopefully it will not cut reasonable volume of New SAFARI.
Lot of inspiration from XUV 5OO here. 7 seat layout, all disc brakes, armrest with cooler Box, 3 seat blower control, 3 row flat folding seat..
Will be a Perfect modern SUV (when 4x4 is in the arsenal)💯👍👍
Just thinking that what maximum exchange price can I get for my 1 year old I20 active...
At that time, I was not able to buy safari, now I can by the grace of God. Always seen Safari as my dream car, hopefully it will be mine within next 2 months.
Great review dear❤️❤️❤️
It looks so premium. Job well done TATA.
The architecture just do a justice for safari because the greatest offroader in world sharing it's architecture with the great offroader in India is just awesome
Excellent job! Tata could've added some more features such as sunblinds, front parking sensors, wireless charging and others.
I've watched basically every manufacture on sale in the states. Guess I'll check out what India has been up. I really like this model. Captain's chairs + theater seating is an awesome combo.

I have an safari already but new one looking very stylish what should I do now friends kindly suggests..regards jasbir Singh khaira chandigarh
Was really waiting for this review!
How tall are you Nikhil, trying figure the leg room in the car. Thanks.
Hi. I'm 5'11"!
Overall it seems a very impressive package. Great job Tata Motors 👍🏻
In 7-seater config, looked like the middle bench is not setup higher, like in 6-seater middle row?
Blue color looked fantastic.
The baige / off-white seats looks far more premium compared to 'sporty' black seats.
Very spacious, interiors seemed very good quality. Will buy it.
much better 3rd row when we see the overall length of this car
I have currently booked the Tata Harrier XZA+. 7 Seats are not my requirement but second row recline adjustment can be a useful feature.
Would you still recommend the Safari over harrier? Considering the other added features that Safari is offering. Is it worth paying the extra 1.6/1.8 lakhs (on-road difference).
My biggest concern is the added weight and dimension change. How does it affect the driving dynamics when compared to the harrier. For instance, does this cause lower end lag and Body roll?
Was waiting for 1st feb, now I'm gonna be binging car reviews 🤩
The design of car is the combination of XL6 and hexa. From back it looks XL6 and from front looks like hexa.
Whats your thoughts.🤔🤔🤔
Tata focused on main things of a car. Good driving experience, good space for passengers, infotainment system is enough practical to use. So it's a nice suv in this price range
Booked the car yesterday and the waiting period is about 4 to 6 weeks, nice car
Dashboard could have been better as like of compass and 4wd option should be must in safari .
Well Done TATA...
- a proud owner of TATA Sky.
My all time favourite SUV ❤️❤️, but it's not in my price.. maybe oneday
Which one is best In segment?? Innova/ hector plus/ Safari??
Always liked it and wondered when would TATA ever consider refreshing it and bring it in front row with likes of XUV or other similar cars in line up. Hope it does not gets into take-off mode like old one when full with passenger. Looks great
This is totally weird that people really didn't like the way Tata has named this Safari. When original Safari was there, no one cared about it and now, all of them come back speaking ill about its naming. Whatever it is, this is a very good competition to MG Hector+ and Xuv500
If they had added 4 by 4 it would have definitely been a safari..
It's coming
Actually only 2% of the market had 4x4 old safari. Requirement for 4x4 was too low that its not worth the try from company's point of view..
I brought XUV 500 and believe me Tata and Mahindra have improved hell a lot. One thing better in new safari compare to harrier is it's disc breaks for all wheels. 👍
really loving the comeback of tata motors in recent days
So according to this video which is woth to buy harrier or all new safari
This is so cool. Loved the Safari when I was growing up.
excellent video.. sir can u tell wheather tata officials will include all disc brake, ira, tpms, ventilated seats nd ambient lights in harrier too..
They should have introduced AWD with this model of safari.
Ventilated seat is a must and requires a next generation infotaintment system. I liked the new electric park brake and 18 inch alloys. I would like to get brown seats too.
genuinely good and fair review .... loved the new Safari ... thanks for unbiased and detailed review...
Glad you liked it! :-)
Compare the SUV car segment such as Tata Safari vs XUV 500 vs innova crysta etc those are available in seven seater segment
Excellent review, detailed as always.
Waiting for the comparison video of Tata Safari vs MG Hector 7 seat
See the price difference
I'm VIP very big 5-star fan's of this legend car, thank you Tata motors foe giving such a legend car,
They managed to give her resemblance of her ancestors. Love it
Can you make a comparison between Tata Safari and Toyota Innvova? They seem to do the same job for me but want to know which car will be a better choice to live with over an ownership period of 10 years
AUTOCAR🔥 always rocking ahead from other reviewer's 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tata Safari - Probably the only mid-range SUV without any haters! Hope the new one lives up to its legacy.
Tata harrier + back seats = Tata Safari
IDIOT wat about
rear diskbrakes,
IRA connectivity,
Electronic parking brake
Tyre pressure monitoring system(TPMS)
Electric parking brake
Auto hold
Bigger tyres
Captain seats
revised rear look,
increase in height and length
all these are not there on Harrier
TATA: No need to thank me
Which is the best car Xuv500 or Safari. Can anyone please suggest me with full details.
It is a bold and handsome car but it misses out front parking sensors and all are waiting for 4*4
Tata Safari is my dream since 2005.. I'm trying hard to get one..
When you get to the last seat it looks like as in BMW x7 really similiar
Tata Motors have really come a long way.
so they didn't improve that left knee ergonomics
and same old 2008 Micromax tablet like infotainment system
This is what disappoint me most , heavy steering, knee ergonomics are trivial problems, they really lack customer feedback and sophistication
Superb video. Good photography
Glad you liked it!
