#6869 "Resolven Grange" was built at GWR Swindon Works on March 31st, 1939 and was withdrawn from service on July 31st, 1965 from Cardiff East Dock Shed. It was cut up at Birds Scrapyard on October 31st, 1965 at the age of 26.
Another great video Sam. I did notice that the rear wheels on the tender didn't seem to turn when you were running her slowly. Sometimes the middle set of wheels didn't rotate either. But they did seem to turn when the loco was moving faster.
Thanks very much Charles - yeah unfortunately the wheels are quite stiff on that tender, so it looks as though I'll need to add more weight! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Not in the same league as the new King Class for sure but a nice looking loco nevertheless. I couldn't help but notice that the tender wheels were not turning much on linking up with the carriages and then again when setting off. Maybe the tender is too light.
Another top video Sam. Having a weathered loco in your fleet gives it variety. Also in my view of all the GWR 4-6-0's the Grange class are the underrated, unsung heroes. Look forward to your next video regards, Gary.
Found This Engine for 10$ at a Hobby Shop in the U.S which is unsual. It was very heavy so I think it was a older model. It was missing it's tender and still ran.Have it in my collection
This locomotive is one of my favorite looking ones. Even though I'm in the states, I quite like the look of these locomotives. Also, the weathering on this one is very nicely done. It's not too much but just right to make it look more realistic. Great job on the review Sam.
*SCREAMING* I’ve been waiting for this moment! Although I’m not a big fan of the GWR, I say that their locos are quite stunning. Anyway, have a great one Sam! You always bring joy, happiness, and trains into our life! Your Friend, Sai
Nice review Sam. Good to see Bullman again! It looks like the middle and rear wheels on the tender are not moving at slow speed when you was doing the slow speed test. I was wondering if them dragging was likely the cause of the noise? For a 13 year old model I think the detail is very good myself. Not sure about weathering on locos, some seem to suit it and others not. think this would have looked better without myself.
Thanks a lot mate, well spotted on Bullman! Yes the tender wheels aren't too great - but it's really because the tender is too light - I had it all to pieces when it came, so I know all the bearings are cleaned and oiled! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A lovely model Sam, and a great review as always. It's always personal choice, but when these locos are running on a layout, it's difficult to see all this fine detail, so getting a value purchase as you have managed to do is the right way to go. If they're purchased to go into a display cabinet, then the extra details is fine....otherwise, the extra costs do seem difficult to justify...Just my own opinion...Regards...Bob
Thanks very much Robert, really glad you enjoyed this one! Yeah this is true actually - I don't mind lower levels of detail provided the price matches the product!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another fine engine. I thought the detail looked very good, especially from the front. Never worried too much about cabs myself, though I have painted in detail and I do like to add a crew. Of course I am not really one for the weathered look, I would want to dust it!
Thanks a lot Ian - yeah this one really does look great from the front, what with the weathering! haha I'm the same - I keep wanting to clean it ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Modern design was in the 2000s, its gone down hill since in late 2010s and 2020s. The patchiness would have been because they would have washed the parts that need to be clean for regulation purposes. In the last days of steam, usually only the number plates and the br emblem would be cleaned. While everything else would be dirty. "Yea" to the visable valve gear which would have shown the internal stephenson valve gear. The tender wheels are stiff, but great model nonetheless, love the weathering. It's on my list of future locos to buy lol😄
2:51 I'm surpised that they didn't put the BR power classification on the back, even though they were used until 1965! 15:52 I noticed the tender wheels weren't turning while the engine was moving!
Amazing video as always. I remember seeing an exclusive Hornby Grange in Harrods for only £120 and I didn't buy it. Now, what with the near-£200 prices, I really regret not picking it up!
It looks a pretty good loco. Loving the brass detailing on the cab, splashers, etc. She should have Stephenson's valve gear on the inside, I think... The coupling isn't a 3 link type... It's a screw link type 😁 And the odd one out was the Crab Well done Mr Sam.
Thanks Thom! Yes they're a bit stiff on this one - I reckon it could do with a bit more weight, since a drop of oil hasn't helped! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Johnny the Jinty is a good runner. He fits in with my pristine engines better than I first thought. They've welcomed him very happily, I'm glad to say. Jimmy nearly scorned him, but the two are best of friends. I have three Jinties altogether: Weathered BR Black Johnny, LMS red Jamie and BR Black Jimmy. Does your LMS red Jinty have a name beginning with j? It doesn't matter if he hasn't got one yet.
I like weathered locos but I would always take a mint Flying Scotsman over a weathered one but that is just me. But the GWR Grange class looks grate weathered. Also why was B.R. so hasty in getting rid of all of there locos, and it was the same here in the states unfortunately.
My my, what an amazing loco! absolutley astonishing. from the livery to the weathering, it´s all perfect. I wil have to say at 16:37, when se is coupling up to the coaches, the tender barely/ don´t move. oh well... anyway, i realy enjoyed watching this review as allways. i´ll see you soon, twan ista
Hey Sam, I had a question, is there a version of that model but without the weathering and with the GWR markings? Let me explain, I like the weathering effect but I like my model Locomotives to look like their new, and I just like the GWR markings. OK, thanks! Have a nice day! :D
Check this our - they do seem to have one in their range: www.hornby.com/uk-en/shop/locomotives/locomotives-by-class/6800-class/gwr-4-6-0-6800-grange-class.html Merry Christmas - Sam :)
Yes they're very stiff on this one - I think extra weight would definitely fix the problem, I just haven't gotten around to it yet! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I spotted LMS Crab, LNER B12, King George 6th and a Southern Tender Engine (can't remember which class loco it is). I prefer pristine engines. Weathered ones put me off buying them. Your weathered Grange engine, Resolven Grange, is nice enough in her weathered condition, but you would have done better to buy a pristine model of her. On the subject of GWR 4-6-0's, I was thinking you could have a running session with Resolven Grange and King George 6th double-heading a matching GWR passenger train of six coaches, Pitchford Hall with her Tysley Set and Broome Manor with four Mark 1 Chocolate & Cream Coaches.
Beautiful model Sam! Here's some info you didn't know: The Great Western Society tried to purchase 6853 Morehampton Grange but due to funding issues of how expensive Granges are, they purchased a Manor instead. The new build Saint going on there has a chimney that came from a Grange. Also, 6880 Betton Grange who is under construction was the next one to be built originally. 15 more were to be built but the project was cancelled because of the WWII. They hope 6880 is finished near the end of this year and they plan to also run her on the mainline. I can't wait!
In fact, that new Jinty of mine is weathered. So I've had to break my own rule about weathered engines on my railway. Johnny is a good runner. One weathered engine won't hurt.
I’m ordering bachmann “city of Truro” online for about over £200. It’s pre-owned though but I think I know why is dear because this loco is rare to get. Because I love the city of Truro. Are you thinking off getting it Sam ?
Personally I prefer pristine condition locos so that I can do my own weathering. Hornby did a pretty good job on the grange, now if only they would tackle the manor, we need a new one...
While I do prefer the pristine look, I can appreciate weather. And that Grange looks very nice. Also, in case you were curious about the new grange, Betton Grange according to their website, she's almost done, and is going to have the boiler fitted soon. Hopefully a new model of her comes out soon. :) Okay, spotting time! LNER B17 at 14:459--very sneaky showing it so early Sam. :)So is the odd one out an LMS Crab at 18:39? GWR King at 18:49, LNER B12 19:07, LSWR S15 at 22:10. As always I really love the spotting "game" if you will Sam, please don't stop doing it. :)
Hi Scott - it'd be very difficult to do a video on that, because there's so much variation between models! If I ever need to replace one though, I'll be sure to film it! Cheers, Sam :)
Great video, Sam! Eagerly awaiting the new Grange in the near future. I was wondering... if anybody, whether it's Hornby or Bachmann or anyone else, creates a model of the Furness Railway Class 21/K2 Larger Seagull (not counting Edward the Blue Engine) could you please review it? I would appreciate it very much!
Hi Sam Yes I have one in br black it stunning Derwent Grange is mine think I paid £70 new. But that weather version stunning too in my opinion Tender wheels I'd go round Keep safe ARP
Im not too big fan of engines pulling coaches, Don't know why though.I personally prefer freight engines and mixed traffic pulling heavy loads. My personal favourite locos are the 4F and anything 0-6-0
hey sam i am having trouble choosing between the hornby s15 or the hornby grange class i love both engines but i cant buy them together beacause i dont have $400 laying around
Thanks so much Mark - can't believe how close to 30k it's getting now - crazy!!! :D Nahh I don't have anything planned - I like doing special streams though :3 Thanks for watching - Sam :)
16:38 Just wondering if anyone or Sam saw that the rear wheels on the tender locked up until coupling onto the coaches.....weird 🤔 P.s Spectacular video Sam :)
haha yeah - they're quite stiff on this one - and the light tender means they don't turn too great, I'll be adding more weight soon! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Loverly Loco, Sam but a am a GWR nut. weathering looks fair. If the year is right Hornby did do better locos than Bachmann. Great detail for the year. I like weathering. Traction tyres, i hope not.
haha that's Bullman - he turns up from time to time - look at my Christmas train series of videos - you'll find out more about him! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Vincent, thanks very much for the info on Resolven - much appreciated!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nothing better then a classic great Western 4-6-0!
There also my favourite train (I have a county class)
Yeah I agree - I can see why! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another great video Sam. I did notice that the rear wheels on the tender didn't seem to turn when you were running her slowly. Sometimes the middle set of wheels didn't rotate either. But they did seem to turn when the loco was moving faster.

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hey sam sometimes the wheels on the tenders screws on the tender are screed in to much try unscrewing them a bit
Beautiful model, I love pretty much any GWR 4-6-0!!! I know I’ve probably said this before but my favorite engine of all time is Olton hall!!!❤️❤️❤️
Thanks a lot Shawn - me too, they're awesome aren't they?? :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This is the greatest review on a weathered locomotion. Nice work with the video Sam.
Ahh that's very kind of you - many thanks!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great Western! Nothing quite like their locos! Each one an excellent and versatile performer, with elegant copper capped funnels and evocative names!
haha absolutely - I couldn't agree more!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I've never herd of the grange class but it looks so good with that weathering
haha yeah it's one of the lesser known ones! Glad you liked the weathering :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Weathering, no matter how "slight" adds realism to any model - trains in particular.
Thanks for sharing...
Agreed! It really can work wonders!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
In the cab, the hole in the firebox, you could put a light to make it seem like the coal is being burnt. Lovely review as always
Yeah you absolutely could - quite a nice feature that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thank you Sam trains
No problem mate! :D
Oooh, my favourite Western tender engine! Especially with a Churchward tender...
Thanks a lot mate - yeah the old fashioned tenders are the best :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice. A lovely bit of 4-6-0 passenger action!
Thanks Allan - for sure, I love seeing this one run! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I like the weathering, I've just been to the ravenglass and eskdale railway, I got to go on the new old European train.
Thanks mate, me too actually! Ooh awesome - did you have a good time?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Not in the same league as the new King Class for sure but a nice looking loco nevertheless. I couldn't help but notice that the tender wheels were not turning much on linking up with the carriages and then again when setting off. Maybe the tender is too light.
I love the locomotive detailing and the dust for realistic engine
Thanks a lot Lucas - I really like that too! :D

I spent my youth in the LMS Region, but somehow, I just love the GW, All my locos are GW pre BR era. The Grange is on my to buy list. Great video Sam.
Nice review Sam. Good to see Bullman again! It looks like the middle and rear wheels on the tender are not moving at slow speed when you was doing the slow speed test. I don't know if you noticed it or not ,but in the cab of your Hornby grange, the Firebox hatch is open which you don't see these days.
Yes you're right! I wonder if that's so you can add a light??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have one in B R black Derwent Grange. It looks super. Great review thanks.
Ahh fantastic - they are lovely models! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The engine is a fantastic one! The model looks stunning, too!
Thanks so much Ethan, really glad you liked it!

That dust (or rust) effect really makes the loco stand out, like it's been restored or saved from scrap! :)
- T
I agree! It really enhances the model, makes it look almost real!! :D

True
2:51 I'm surpised that they didn't put the BR power classification on the back, even though they were used until 1965!

It looks a pretty good loco.

She looks brilliant, honestly thinking about buying one
Thanks a lot mate - I can highly recommend it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Could you do a video where you compare all your Great Western 4-6-0's
Ooh I do like that idea - thanks for that mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi sam i was watching this video and i saw that the rear 2 sets if wheels on your grange class tender were not moving during the slow speed test
Yes well spotted - they're a bit stiff on this, and the tender is so light - I'll get that fixed asap! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great vid! It looks like the tender wheelsets dont always turn, might be some binding goin on.
Thanks Thom! Yes they're a bit stiff on this one - I reckon it could do with a bit more weight, since a drop of oil hasn't helped!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello Sam! Very nice video! Also, what song was that in the beginning of the video?
Thanks a lot Sai, I think that one was Sour Tennessee Red!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great! this week I was trying to get an achievement on train sim, for the Grange Express Fish Freight I kept failing miserably.
haha I wasn't very good at that mission either, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Johnny the Jinty is a good runner. He fits in with my pristine engines better than I first thought. They've welcomed him very happily, I'm glad to say. I think I'm the same Warren - but I'm not too bothered!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The back wheels on the tender are moving at all sam, if you have not noticed
Thanks Tom - yeah I'm getting onto that soon, it's a weight issue with the tender I reckon!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My my, what an amazing loco! absolutley astonishing. from the livery to the weathering, it´s all perfect.
I wil have to say at 16:37, when se is coupling up to the coaches, the tender barely/ don´t move. oh well...
anyway, i realy enjoyed watching this review as allways.
i´ll see you soon,

Thanks a lot Twan, really glad you liked her! Thanks for the lovely comment,

Nicely done Sam. Well done. Can you do custom models?
I spotted a maroon tender engine in the shed at toy town and a blue and green b12 in the siding
Thanks a lot mate! Haha no I'm no good at painting them myself ;D
Well spotted there!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A really beautiful and nice detailed loco.
Thanks again Norbert, really glad you thought so! :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The next loco you review should be the Hornby Peckett 0-4-0T! It's a lovely loco from what I've seen in pictures!
Absolutely! I'm hoping to get a Peckett when they release more green ones! :D
Wen r u going to do the class 170 in scotrail saltire livery
I don't have that one at the moment, but I will keep an eye out for them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have a castle class that has a similar motor and it also makes a lot of noise, I think it's just due to the age.
Yeah I suppose it is the age! This version doesn't have the ringfield though, if that's what your thinking??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, I had a question, is there a version of that model but without the weathering and with the GWR markings? Let me explain, I like the weathering effect but I like my model Locomotives to look like their new, and I just like the GWR markings. OK, thanks! Have a nice day! :D
Check this our - they do seem to have one in their range: www.hornby.com/uk-en/shop/locomotives/locomotives-by-class/6800-class/gwr-4-6-0-6800-grange-class.html
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Thanks, Sam! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Great video Sam can't believe how many 4-6-0s the GWR had
David's Trains they only ever made 1 4-6-2. 3 or 4 of their 4-6-0s had over 100 examples built
David's Trains And each one of them were masterpieces!
Yes they were
Thanks David -me neither, it's incredible!! D:
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think the GWR had some grate locos but I will still prefer my L.N.E.R locos.
I love the weathering on that!
Thanks Fuzzy - me too! :D
Where do you get those coaches that start the show? Love your video's. Well done
haha! I just drew those in photoshop, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Did you notice that the tender wheels were more static than actually rotating. Perhaps a little weight added to the tender would cure this.
I don’t know what it is but there’s just something about GWR 4-6-0s that reminds me of Christmas
haha I've always used a GWR 4-6-0 as my Christmas train actually - great minds think alike ;D

16:30 - tender wheels are dragging and not turning - worth a look ;-) that'll be cutting the pulling power a bit and put flats on the wheels.

You wouldn't want to add any to the underside, but possibly there would be some room in the boiler/smokebox!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Just wondering Small do you prefer the Gwr collet Tenders or the Hawksworth Tenders.
Hmmm, I've always been a collet man, but I do like both!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That's the most detailed loco ever!!! Have you found the 15 guinea special yet(limited of 1000) or maybe a britianna which I like.
KOOTPGB
haha yeah it's soo nicely detailed! Not yet, but I will continue to look! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I do prefer the older models as the tender is disconnected from the loco which makes handerling much easier
Thanks Daniel - yes it definitely does make them easier to handle, that's true!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam great vid and a great loco too. Its a shame there are no granges left though. Fantastic, well done
Thanks a lot mate - yes it's a real shame, hopefully they'll finish the new one soon!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Amazing video Sam and what a beautiful locomotive
Thanks James - glad you thought so! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains might have to get one
I like the weathering Sam
Thanks Adam - me too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Im not too big fan of engines pulling coaches, Don't know why though.I personally prefer freight engines and mixed traffic pulling heavy loads. My personal favourite locos are the 4F and anything 0-6-0
No problem Pasty - I do try to show goods from time to time too!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam another GWR Horndy Locomotive How Many do you own part's 34 years?
Thanks a lot mate! How many GWRs?? I have no idea I must admit!! D:
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains is King of all GWRS horndy model
Did any one else notice the two back tender wheels stoped moving when The 4-6-0 went to couple up to the coaches or was it just me.
haha yeah - I think the tender needs a bit more weight, since the wheels are quite stiff on mine!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I noticed that, too. The middle wheels did the same thing at times.
I noticed that too. Would probably explain why she slowed down on Gordons hill.
Stunning loco with a very beautifull cab!!! Lucky you!!!
Thanks Onno - I agree, such a great looking model this! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hey sam i am having trouble choosing between the hornby s15 or the hornby grange class i love both engines but i cant buy them together beacause i dont have $400 laying around
Ooh that's tricky - I think the S15 is the better model in my opinion! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Again a very nice GWR loco! Good job Sam!
Thanks a lot Marco - much appreciated mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hope you don't mind the shed code on loco is
83 G Penzance
Thanks very much Adi - that's really good to know! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
great video sam. the weathering on this model is brilliant. :)
Thanks so much Eddie, really glad you liked that!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice I recently purchased the weathered BR black D16 and Pullman coaches by the way it's ECML man my mate changed my name
Thanks a lot mate! Ooh superb - hope you enjoy! And no worries, I'll try to remember it's you! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You should get and review the bachmann Thomas and Friends narrow gauge trains
I know! Those would be amazing to get!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
B12 is the odd one out because the cylinders are inside.
Ahh that's very original - I'll let you have that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Congratulations on 28,000 subscribers mate! Really pleased for you!
Have you got anything planned for a 30k video?
Thanks so much Mark - can't believe how close to 30k it's getting now - crazy!!! :D
Nahh I don't have anything planned - I like doing special streams though :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Ooh a special stream sounds cool! :)
16:38
Just wondering if anyone or Sam saw that the rear wheels on the tender locked up until coupling onto the coaches.....weird 🤔
P.s Spectacular video Sam :)
haha yeah - they're quite stiff on this one - and the light tender means they don't turn too great, I'll be adding more weight soon! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think I want the New Hornby Grange in GWR livery.
Ooh good call - there's a link in the description if you're interested?? :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Loverly Loco, Sam but a am a GWR nut. weathering looks fair. If the year is right Hornby did do better locos than Bachmann. Great detail for the year. I like weathering. Traction tyres, i hope not.
Thanks a lot Nigel! I agree - this was far better than what Bachmann were doing at the time, by a country mile!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Grange or Hall? That is the question.
King.
Ooh which one is better?! Very tricky! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is The locomotive in the siding at the scenery section at 18:34 the crab class and if it is then I think that is the odd one out
Well spotted - it was indeed, well done! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video love the GWR engines how about a mainline engine
Thanks a lot mate, yeah I should show my mainline engines some more! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The tender wheels are barely moving, which is rather strange.
Nice video though Sam!
: )
haha yeah well spotted - the tender needs some more weight!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey have you ever considered live steam 00 gauge locomotives?
I've not seen very many for sale to be honest - if I saw one for a good price, I might be tempted! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello again Sam, another great vid! Need to ask though.... what’s the story with the cow? Lol, I’m dying to know!
haha that's Bullman - he turns up from time to time - look at my Christmas train series of videos - you'll find out more about him! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam! I've made the little red engine short 4 if you wanna watch it. I loved this video and the model looks so cool.
Ooh sounds good Jack - I'll take a look for sure! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Dont get me wrong the GWR grange is a lovley engine but i prefere the Hall class and the King class
Ahh yes the Halls and Kings are much more prominent - I know what you mean!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam Remember you drove a Grange class in train simulator and that was 6800 Arlington Grange.
haha yeah I do remember! It was a lot of fun to drive too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I bought one from a fare last year for £100 and 4 hornby pullman coaches with lights I think I got a bargain 😂🚂🚂good vid mate
That's very good indeed - bargain!!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thank you! :D
