GROUP CHAT ROUND TABLE: The Pros/Cons of Bills 18/20

- Another wild week in Alberta politics, as Premier Danielle Smith's government introduces sweeping changes to how city and town councils are elected, operate, and are held accountable. The UCP's Bill 20 opens the door for municipal political parties, restores union and corporate donations, and empowers the province to remove elected councillors (when it's "in the public interest"). Question is, are the changes good or bad for democracy? What do they mean for the average Albertan? Back by popular demand...it's our Group Chat Round Table!
2:10 | Jenny Adams, Sarah Hamilton, and Jarrett Campbell take on municipal political parties (10:00), the return of union and corporate donations (26:05), the power to fire city councillors (29:00), Bill 18 - the Provincial Priorities Act (31:10), Pierre Poilievre's roadside photo op (34:00), and the Alberta NDP leadership race (48:30).
57:00 | Gabriel sounds off on 15 Minute Cities, James is nervous about the feds selling TMX, and Angela has a message for Alberta's duly-elected mayors and councillors. It's The Flamethrower presented by the DQs of Northwest Edmonton and Sherwood Park!

Just listen to these "strategists" wanting a party system...LOLOL We don't want it! How about that?
Wow...three conservatives in favour of a stupid UCP policy that will only benefit the UCP. I'm shocked.
We've had conservatives on that hate the idea, too! Bill 20 is UCP policy, but political parties at the municipal level aren't exclusive to the UCP. I'm interested in the pros and cons...but I understand some folks' minds are made up right away...and that's cool too. -rpj
"stupid" always an insults with wokists
Refreshing information . Love your daily show and diverse opinions you cover. Keep up your standards..

Here's a little tidbit for those of you following the events in Chestermere, as well as the proposed changes to the Municipal Governance Act.
Municipalities DO NOT exists under the Canadian Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land.
The Provincial government is responsible for ALL matters that Municipal Governments deal with. The Government created the Ministry of Municipalities to oversee local matters.
The Provincial Government, with the support of a majority of the legislature created the Ministry of Municipalities on December 20, 1911, 6 years after entering into confederation.
Since then, ALL matters of municipal affairs are under the direction of the Minister of Municipalities. Municipalities ONLY EXIST as an act of the legislature and therefore an act of the legislature comprised of duly elected officials, with a majority vote can alter, amend, strike, dissolve, or otherwise change the Municipal Governance Act at any time, by any government. This is not corruption, it is the law as set forth through exercise of democracy.
There are people out there, (let's call them Victim Hunters,) who are trying to not only elevate themselves by using the tribulations of others but also convince you of two very dangerous falsehoods:
1- They are trying to convince you that by "interfering" with municipal affairs the current government is trying to "take power" from the municipalities. This is FALSE- the Ministry of Municipalities ALREADY holds ALL power over municipalities. Remember that municipalities ONLY EXIST AS AN ACT of the legislature.
2- They claim that the government is corrupt due to them "taking power," or "interfering" with municipalities is justification for people to not be civically engaged in a constructive manner with the current government. If you want to make change to the way the Province interacts with your municipality, (the MGA,) then you MUST be involved and do the work to make the change.
I'm growing very tired of watching this occur all around me. It seems that more often than not there are a few people "rage farming" by only telling part of the story and they are causing really, really potentially terrible problems for the rest of us. Even worse, people are hyper-sensitive about government and are willing to readily accept only one-side of the story because it confirms their notion that "everyone is corrupt, all government and politicians are evil".
We have problems, for sure. I hope people will open their eyes very, very soon and notice that certain people are using our problems as a method to elevate themselves and act on a deep-seated hatred towards a particular party. What I'm seeing is not conducive to positive change and will hurt us all in the end.
Anyhow, I'll just get back to the kitchen, where I belong.
-Chris
PS- I will point out, again, that this issue along with these problems could be dealt with swiftly and fully. Would you like your county or city to have sovereign discretion in matters of elections etc? All paths lead to Alberta Independence. An independent and sovereign Alberta could, through Constitutionally enshrined law, acknowledge municipalities as jurisdictions that are sovereign in the area of self-government.

What’s your source about the diagalon hoodies and diagalon flags at this protest? Was it just the one drawing on the inside of the trailer door or are we talking about more of a presence? My experience is if there was video proof of this it would have surfaced by now.
Not at that protest - PP has been photographed with people in Diagolon hoodies in past. I'm not one to pounce every time a politician winds up in a tricky photo - it's bound to happen. That's not the biggest detail in this story...is it? -rpj
I appreciate your reply. It just seems desperate for the liberal party to be trying to capitalize on this. It doesn’t seem effective and their efforts to make this a central issue today in the house as opposed to talking about the BC drug policy was embarrassing. They lack awareness of the issues on the ground right now.
Diagolon is a goat, 😆 🤣. Not sure where you all get your information.
Awesome show, what I don't understand about the push back against the party system in Municipal politics is that it's probably going to increase voter turnout which is usually what left-leaning people like.
It hasn't in any other city where the party system is allowed.
It erodes democracy, that's why it's bad.
It is an erosion of democracy, that's why it's bad.
A statement like this needs some evidence.
@@tyscam we will see in the next election
You talk about PPC like they are heretics.
Not heretics, but lunatics.
Cough, cough...
They aren't heretics, they're lunatics.
If the shoe fits!
I wouldn't say they're heretics, more like lunatics.
You talk about Max Bernier and the PPC like they're far-right extremists. Max Bernier was an elected MP for 13 years.
Yes, sometimes extremists can get elected.
The PPC *is* Canada's far right party. What is it, if not that? (Was Max faking it for 13 years, or is he faking it now?) -rpj
