To be honest I think all three of them were in the wrong:
1. Rio shouldn't have said "It's not your life" It was kinda rude and disrespectful considering that the fact that he's a Morales too.
2. Miles shouldn't have said whatever.
3. And Jeff shouldn't have yelled at him he made a scene and embarrassed himself.
Why didn’t miles just tell Jeff that he didn’t care about being father and being a captain is like a distraction from his family.

I guess I can't blame the parents even though they are being controlling and annoying, if he keeps concealing he's Spider-Man, them getting mad is just meant to be. You can't prevent that.
@@downspiral Agreed. While I do think Jeff and Rio are strict on some aspects (school, grades, manners, family) I don't think they're usually that strict but they know Miles is lying to them. And I think Miles has always been mostly open with his parents, so they just... don't know how to react. And they don't always do it well.

Honestly, the "champ" is sooooo condescending, once those belittling phrases come out there's no real diplomatic solution. The parents worked themselves into a mood of disrespect to the point that no explanation would have been satisfying.
The little sequence of Miles quick changing up a stairwell at 2:51-3:05 will always go SO hard.

I’ve been having fights with my parents about my future and this scene was the biggest stab in the heart I’ve had in a long time. I watched in theaters with a friend and I ran home after to hug them.

What is so important that he had to miss alot of classes and be absent in his family. Miles being late in his dad's promotion party is pretty much the last straw.

Rio? Yeah, absolutely. She's well-intentioned, but she comes off extremely manipulative in this scene. Like what the hell do Miles relatives who have passed on CARE how he decides to live? Of course all she had to say was that Miles is still technically a minor and needs about three to six years on him. But being a mom she probably can't imagine the idea of letting him go.
It is wrong but not everybody says the right thing. There's a better way to phrase this but not everybody is that smooth to think like this when they are angry in the moment.

Agreed. Parents who have endured past hardships tend to push it too hard and make it seem like they're trying to live vicariously through their kids. They're jealous, yet fail to empathize.

But to play devil's advocate, I don't like that Rio tried to guilt trip him by saying it's not your life. Basically, suggesting that he has no agency, and he owes everything to his parents just for being born.
Miles doesn't owe anything to anybody and yes, he could have been better about showing up on time, even with meeting the counselor, but at the end of the day, he's his own person. He didn’t ask to be born.
