  • Colonial Williamsburg is home to the historic Duke of Gloucester Street which runs directly through the old Colonial Capitol of Virginia.
Many popular and well-known homes and buildings from the 18-century are found along this area here, including places like The Governor’s Palace, The Capitol Building, Raleigh Tavern, The Post Office, Prentis Store, Silversmith, Charlton’s Coffeehouse, Merchant Square, and the homes and stores of many of the early residents of the old city, all found up and down this famous road and throughout the area.
Thoughtfully executed and often positioned behind each of these carefully restored structures, is a semi-other world of its own. Not as often seen, when traversing along Colonial Williamsburg’s main city street and pathways that intersect one another, but equally stunning to discover.
The architects and designers from that early time period crafted and positioned many intricate designs, patterns, and sophisticated yet organic layouts, within the landscapes they looked at and treated as aesthetic artwork.
The restoration efforts that continue to take place inside Colonial Williamsburg hold up this amazing skillset, allowing it to stand true as it once did, here in the modern-day. Yet many of these inventive areas are not as easily seen, and finding them along and nearby Williamsburg’s most frequented route, is truly a visual treasure hunt.
In this episode of Quest Capsule, we take you along with us to see many of the hidden gems that lie behind the Colonial structures laid out amongst the city, and in and around the Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg Virginia.
An exploration we were thrilled to take during a couple of our latest visits to Colonial Williamsburg. We hope you can take the time to come along with us to take in the sights and sounds.

We have been wandering the backyards for decades! Love discovering new things. The Catherine Orr and Taliaferro-Cole gardens are two of our favorites to wander, but it's all wonderful!

Years ago, we found that back path with the creek, benches, and small step bridge. We sat there to eat a picnic lunch with my small children and my parents. It was so nice to stay in the outdoors where the kids could wander and not sit still in chairs to wait for their food.

I just discovered your videos. They are wonderful! I watched several today doing chores. They are like a professional documentary. Your choice of music, the video, and you have a great speaking voice really hooked me! I grew up very close to Williamsburg and go back every year and enjoy wandering the colonial streets and never tire of their beauty!

I was so excited this popped up in my RUclips recommendations. I thought I had watched all your Williamsburg videos, so I'm glad for this treat! This was so beautifully filmed, and the narration/music was also excellent. I can absolutely picture myself there again on a quiet morning thanks to this! I've been thinking of another visit and this has given me some new ideas on exploring! Thank you.

I think it would be interesting to do a video on John D. Rockefeller Jr and how he was responsible for the major restoration and rebuilding of historic Williamsburg that we see today. Viewers should realize that this is an idealized version of what Williamsburg may have looked like in the 18th century. In colonial times it was never this neat and manicured.

Thanks Kelly! There are residences that are private but other areas and gardens can be explored. It's a fascinating world back there no doubt. Private residences have a door marker noting they are private but often you can still get a good glimpse from the fence or surrounding area. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Absolutely stunning ! How pretty this was , with the music , birdsong, and your narrative. I could almost picture little kids playing out in those yards.
    I had a few questions .
Was this filmed recently ? I was trying to tell by the trees and grass , whether it was Spring or Fall ?
What was the black cage type thing hanging from the chimney about halfway through ? Was it a light or something else ?
Thanks very much for the video. Excellent work as always.
PS- I always forget to tell your wife, she has the most beautiful hair. 💕

Thank you Julie! Im glad you enjoyed it. This was filmed over a couple trips in late Autumn of 2020 into late Winter time of 2021. The black cage that was hanging from a light post was a hanging lantern. Thank you for questions, comments and I let Sarah know your compliment on her hair! Happy Holidays!

We get off the beaten path every time we go there. Just have to be sure we don’t go in the areas that are private residences. I think I’ve heard there’s a walking trail at Bassett Hall. Have you ever done that? Btw, great video!

I would recommend staying at Colonies at Williamsburg. It is a lovely property. We stayed there in 2019. A warning though! Please do not get snagged by the Concierge. She or he will offer you tickets to Old Williamsburg for just 90 minutes of your time. We fell for it. We were lied to by our sales agent Jackie, convinced to buy and now we our out $45K, all of our savings. My husband is a 100% service connected Vietnam Vet. I have been contacting the CEO's of VV for months with no response. Enjoy the property but go through Airbnb or some other rental and DO NOT BUY!!

"Sarah will tell you I love a good alleyway" LOL!! In the low voice you sound like an interview with Jack the Ripper! I'm teasing but only a lil. As a photog I've explored all of these areas and it'd fantastic you've done so. But in all honesty sir you should look into doing voice overs for history documentary type projects. Hope you'll try & good luck, I think you'd do quite well! Ty for the video, I enjoyed it much.
