That railway is one of the most authentic Heritage lines we've visited. Had a couple of days there before COVID-19 put a stop to things for a while. It really does look like a genuine country branch line. The attention to detail was perfect. Must get back again this year! Thanks Paul.
Thank you Lionel and Mary! Yes, I wholly agree - the attention to detail and hard work of all the amazing volunteers is brilliant to see. I do hope to return to visit Cheltenham Racecourse Station, which I have not yet covered on my RUclips Channel. Thanks again, take care, Paul 👍
Thank you Faith! Yes, there is a lot to see here - in addition to travelling on train to Cheltenham or Broadway. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍 Cheers, Paul 🙂
Ah, brilliant, glad you got to go on this excellent heritage railway. Broadway is a lovely village and great you got to see Broadway Tower too - with its stunning views. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🙂 Cheers, Paul
Thank you! Yes, it is well worth a visit and the whole trip from Broadway to Cheltenham is a must do, and a complete day out. I think it is the second longest heritage line (after the West Somerset Railway) in the UK. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul.
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland That was lovely - thank you. A nostalgic look back to the days of yesteryear. What a shame we don't have "smellervision". The sights and sounds fo the steam engine and DMU brought back back many happy memories. Beautifully photographed with your usual high quality commentary. Loved the still photographs too. See you again very soon. Stay safe please
Thank you Michael - ah, yes, I can only bring you the sights and sounds I'm afraid! I think that a while ago now they did try 'Smellovision' in some cinemas, but it didn't catch on - no idea how it worked! Yes, the GWSR, like all the heritage lines that I cover in 'my' region, is a delight! Well worth visiting if you are ever back this way. Thanks so much, take care, Paul.
This is a lovely video! Loved all the fun bits in it like the train to the pub and the toy shop scenes. Tea and cake watching the trains sounds perfect! That’s fantastic that you were recognised! You do a fantastic job showcasing the very best of the West Country in your videos and it’s fantastic to know that people value it when you meet them in person.
Yes, it was such an odd experience with several people getting off the train and wanting a selfie with me! Toddington is a lovely station to hang out for a few hours, and soak up the atmosphere of days gone by. Thanks for a lovely comment Louise! Take care, Paul
I finally rode this steam railway a few days ago, after wanting to go for years! We rode round trip from Cheltenham (where we live) to Broadway and back. Such fun! Thanks for showing me a lot more of Toddington, because I didn't get to spend any time there!! 😉 Cheers! Dara
Thanks Dara. Yes all of the intermediate stations are well worth exploring. Next time you go with the rover ticket you can hope on and off at all of them - timetable willing. The dedication that the volunteers go to to recreate the GWR atmosphere is nothing short of miraculous. Thanks again, Paul 🙂👍
Hi Paul! Toddington looks like a great place to come and appreciate the railway. I enjoyed hearing the trains starting and seeing the photos of the posters and tiny details. This was very relaxing to watch and listen to!
Thank you Donna! Yes, editing the audio tracks on this one took quite sometime - but it was enjoyable to do, because I liked hearing all the little details, like the horses whinning in the distance, while listening 🎧 on my headphones. Glad you liked it too! Take care, Paul 🙂👍
Lovely video which nicely captures the variety and atmosphere of this beautifully situated heritage line. Not far to go to Honeybourne...and onwards? Thank you.
Thank you Malcolm! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, they own the railway trackbed all the way to Honeybourne now, but I think that their finances are a bit stretched because of the pandemic. Hopefully, one day! It is a lovely situation - I remember hearing the steam trains running on this line while I was walking along the Cotswold Way 18 months ago. Take care, Paul 👍
We used to go here when there was a very nice small garden centre attached at the far end- often bought plants & enjoyed the trains & then ate at the ‘Whistle Stop’Tea Rooms which was run by volunteers- made a nice day out. That field opposite often held car rallies too. You captured the Toddington station & the GWR comprehensively- ps when we went it was called the GWR but now it’s called the GWSR -S for Steam though it’s diesel as well.
Hi Diana - bad news, I'm afraid. I think that the garden centre closed a few years ago; the site is still there, and you can make out where the greenhouses used to be. Good news is that the 'Whistle Stop' tea rooms are still there, and I had some tea and cake there on my visit! They do still have car rallies in the (large) car park there too on some of the open days. Yes, I think that they changed the name from GWR to GWSR (Gloucestershire & Warwickshire (Steam) Railway) to avoid confusion with both the former GWR, and the existing GWR railway company. It is still an odd name though, because the line currently goes through both Gloucestershire & Worcestershire, but it has (not yet) anywhere near reached Warwickshire! Thanks so much for watching and commenting - it is very much appreciated. Take care, Paul.
Thank you for such a quick reply! Yes I was told by someone ( can’t remember who) that the garden centre had gone. It was nice to browse in the garden centre and see the steam trains go by. I am glad the tea rooms are still going- they did get taken over by a catering company- nothing stays the same -but on the plus side the toy exhibition is new( to us)& the signal box too. Thanks for the GWR explanation- I know their aim is to link to Stratford- what a money spinner that would be! I find I am always looking forward to your uploads- they are crafted so well( & I only found you in February!!!Lyme Regis video)
@@dianarolph1770 thank you! I am off filming something on the coast tomorrow - was hoping to do that earlier in the week, but weather has not been suitable!
Hi Paul, what a lovely railway that is, read lots about it in Steam Railway but never seen it up this close, thanks very much for taking me there. I know that it had problems with embankments collapsing which they managed to overcome and I remember the push towards Broadway. I wonder if they will expand anymore. That was a very long rake of carraiges pulled by Braveheart, I think I counted 8. Looks like there is a lot to see at Toddington. Great video, lovely to hear the bark of steam!! Good luck from Spain!!
Thank you David! Yes, the longer term project is to push beyond Broadway and onto Honeybourne, where, of course it would meet National Rail on the Cotswold Line. I think like with all heritage lines at the moment, that there are financial issues, although they do own the land on the former trackbed all the way to Honeybourne. The far goal would be to reopen to Stratford-upon-Avon - what a tourist draw that would be - as they would then have mainline rail and connections to two big tourist places, and a large regency spa town. Toddington is well worth visiting, as are all the stations on the line - my personal favourite is Winchcombe Station. Glad you enjoyed the video - take care, Paul.
@@westcountrywanderings Hi Paul, just seen this one published today which I thought you might like to see. I used to live practically on the towpath ruclips.net/video/diW9J58ORAs/видео.html
75014 acquired it's 'Braveheart' name earlier in its preservation career while working the West Highland line but in service worked primarily over the London Midland Region, in its final year being based out of Shrewsbury working the Cambrian For those interested there is surviving footage of this engine in service right here on RUclips under the title 'cambrian railtour' 👍
@@westcountrywanderings Thanks for the interest 👍 Some Class 4's were given larger flat-sided tenders for operation on the Southern Region with many being based out of Exmouth Junction (the Severn Valley's 75069 being an example)
I will hopefully go this year, I last went in the blazing summer of 82? I used to visit an Aunty near there and we used to stay in Broadway. I have photos of it totally deserted with a few odds and ends of stuff lying around, I think we came across it accidentally looking for something else they must have just been getting going back then.
Thank you! Yes, it is a rather special place. That would be wonderful if you still had the photos of what it looked like in the 1980s. You'd be more than welcome if you wanted to join the Westcountry Wanderings Facebook Group, and you could share them on there if you wished. Hope you get a chance to revisit it. The entire line, and all the stations, is absolutely brilliant. Cheers, Paul.
@@westcountrywanderings I'm pretty sure I took them with a disk camera, they were high tec at the time I think they were dead by the late 80's! Hi Paul. A very enjoyable video, from a very well run and maintained heritage railway. Thank you for sharing. Cheers. Ron👍
