I LOVE the way this ride smells. It smells like really stale water. Isn't it funny how smells trigger memories? The smell of Pirates of the Caribbean reminds me of childhood, innocence and happiness. I can see by the comments below I'm not the only person who loves it. Disneyland should market bottles of Pirates of the Caribbean smell to spray around when we want to be happier.

The only smell we put much importance into is smoke, because no matter who you are, if the building you are in is on fire, you've got to get out of it. Smells are important. The Pirates of the Caribbean has always smelled the same as long as I've been alive, and there's no way to think an unhappy thought while riding this wonderful ride. I think it's awesome that the tribe of Disneyland lovers have this primal link in common!
I'm a fan of this idea lol. Disney has air fresheners that have park smells... But not "pirates water" flavor...

I used to be afraid to ride Pirates when I was maybe 5 because of the drop. But now that I’ve been on Splash Mountain, I’ve found out that the Pirates drop is really just a bump compared to that XD

@Ella Kurtz it's actually a very tiny drop it's just the speed that you're going at and the darkness of the ride make it feel more intense

This and the Haunted Mansion are still the best rides in the whole park.

They did supposedly use actual dead people for the cave scene at some point.
Anthony Ianitello ya when the ride first opened they used real skeletons, but later replaced them all with fake ones, except the skull on the headboard of the dead captain in his bed.
I will admit, out of all of the Disneyland rides, this one's the most slow moving, but if you're strolling around Disneyland, and you just wanna relax, than Pirates of the Caribbean, is definitely the ride you'll wanna go on.
The opening scene is the one that is sure to make you relax and fall asleep. At least until you reach the waterfall lol...

+BoilingHotCoffee Pre-movie this ride had a non-existent line. In the mid 90s. Literally, me and a friend went to ride it at 2pm. Zero people in line. Zero. Post-movie the last time I saw the ride queue which was last week. The wait was 40 minutes. Very popular now.
well there's also the fact that Disneyland hosted less visitors then than it does today.
during the summer though, most of the time I usually see a 15 or 20 minute wait for the ride. When Haunted Mansion Holiday opens, it brings a lot of people into New Orleans Square, and since Pirates is nearby, more people are going to go on the ride
John Razimus even with a long line it isn't that long of a wait. That's what I love about this ride is that there's really no wait.

Oh that stale water smell! It's so funny, I said the same thing, then scrolled down to see if anyone else felt the same way. That smell yanks me out of my grownup life, and puts me in a happier place.
When I went on it I thought the part at the end where you go back up on that big hill was a giant drop and I had a panic attack

It's amazing how similar Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion are to each other.
Jupiter9099 Yeah. They both had famous songs Grim Grinning Ghosts and A Pirates life For Me,they both had groundbreaking effects, Paul Frees was in both rides, they both had movie adaptations of each ride (except sadly for Mansion Pirates was more successful) which the only thing the Mansion doesn't have that Pirates does is a movie tie in (at least not until the Del Toro film maybe).

This ride always smells so amazing and is so calming. I just wish this ride would have a mermaid at some point in the water.
That would be soo cool
There used to be a mermaid skeleton and there were mermaids under the water at one point, but they took all of them out and I do not know why. In Shanghai, there are three mermaids swimming and singing the song from the fourth film, but it is very brief.

Oh the memories! This ride was my freaking childhood! I'm a bit over 30 (and we used to go every year) so I've witnessed the changes and I for one don't mind then. They really didn't screw too much with the premise of the ride, I actually think the changes enriched the experience.
I loved the contrast between the old animatronics and the latest one. The new Jack Sparrows (especially the one at 13:29) are awe inspiring, but please NEVER get rid of the originals.

I was born in 2003, the same year POTC 1 came out. I grew up watching these movies and always wanted to go on this ride. I’m 17 and never have been able to go to Disneyland due to money..some day I will come here and witness my childhood once again as an adult.
I adore how many of these setpieces are used as easter eggs in Sea of Thieves
The smell and everything of this ride triggers heavy nostalgia and it brings back child hood memories

This is my favorite ride of all time. I've loved it since I was three years old. I've always loved this, it made me smile. The idea of pirates, anything involving swashbuckling and the ocean, treasure and ships. Ah, yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me.
Have you played sea of thieves? They recreate the ride there, and do an amazing job at that!

The building on the right at 1:13 is the Blue Bayou, a real Disneyland restaurant. We thought about going there for my sisters birthday, but it's a long wait, and it's a little pricey. But it looks like it'd be so nice especially on a hot day when you want to escape the sun and heat.

I remember going on this when I was very young, maybe 5 or 6 and I was super scared of pirates. My whole family was going on so I had no choice but at the front of the line there was this nice disney worker that was dressed up as a pirate and talked to me. He asked me if I was afraid of him and I said no and he told I have nothing to worry about then on the ride. I’ll never forget that guy, looking back it was very sweet of him to come up to me and make me feel better, not to mention he was also talking like a pirate 😂. They really do a great job at Disney making the kids feel the magic :)

Whenever I go to Disneyland I make sure to come to this ride and the haunted mansion, I absolutely love them!!
Those two have always been my two most favorite rides at Walt Disney World in Florida, but I remember enjoying the Pirates ride in California even more so.....seems to be a bit longer....and that eating place inside the ride just looks so cool.
Years ago I meant to go on this ride. Sadly,I never did. Went to Tommorow land though.
You could argue for hours about which rides are better at which park, but there's no doubt in my mind that this Pirates is better than the one in Florida. I love how it goes through Blue Bayou and the caves and treasure part is much longer. I miss this ride

All the comments from this video appear to be before everything is closed. Man I miss Disneyland. The best feeling is going through this ride as a kid and just knowing that that day was just the best. Nothing on earth could top that feeling. Wonderful memories that I will cherish forever.

This ride is my absolute favorite ride.....its always just so fun and so chillen, and such a journey.
The smell is the only thing we're missing. It's so cool that the internet can bring back the old rides we love, but the familiar smell of the water and stuff just brings it all together. thanks so much for posting this!
Two fun facts about the ride:
Early in the morning my mom rode this 9 times in a row since there was no one else on the ride. She stopped when some rowdy teenagers climbed on with her.
Second: A Disney employee had an elderly couple climb on the ride during a parade and they were the only ones. They spent the whole ride making out with the cameras filming them.
When I was little we had Disneyland season passes. I wasn’t even in school yet and my dad would take me all the time, usual during the week in the mornings when the lines were short. The smell is something that I’ll never forget. This was always my favorite ride. My dad passed away this year and I watch this video sometimes because it reminds me of happy times growing up. I miss that smell.

the thing the povs can’t give is the smell, the moisture in the air, and the feeling of moving along with the ride
I love this ride, I think that it is the most terrifying ride in all of Disney Land just because it's so realistic, those look like actors , but people can not be that repetitive.
My grandfather engineerd the men in the well, when i was 8 i was litterly standing next to it, unfortunately my grandfather died 6 years ago
This ride and haunted mansion will always be my favorite. I remember coming here around Halloween.
It was a late night and a Halloween celebration so almost no one was in the park. My family and I rode this on reapt like 15 times. I love it so much. Same with haunted mansion. I just love the animatronics and the smell😩. And how can I forget the songs

There is no better peaceful moment in the park than the opening of the ride w/ the old man and the banjo.

When I was a kid in the 60s I went on this ride, it is still almost the exact same ride today. One of the best rides for sure. I didn't see the fake fire fly's that look real and he cut the speech that the Pirate scull gives in the beginning of the ride.

This bring so much memories!! Ten years ago, the waiting line was like only 10 minutes, 30 minutes max. 2 minutes for the fast-pass track. Now, we have to wait for like 1 hours, 2 hours just to get on a 6-10 mins ride. Not complaining about the staffs service. Their service were excellent! It's just that when time passed by, things changed
