Billy is not only versatile, he's also a true poet and storyteller while also being a great musician. If he wrote a full on opera, my reaction would be "of course he did."
Billy Joel did write a full album of classical pieces for piano called Fantasies & Delusions. He also wrote and recorded a classical sounding piano instrumental called Nocturne from his debut album Cold Spring Harbor from 1971 when he was only 22 years old and wrote a instrumental piece called Elegy: The Great Peconic, which is the third part of a never-released 40-minute orchestral suite, The Scrimshaw Pieces, that evokes the history of Long Island. All of those should be in RUclips too.
Billy is doing his 100th concert at Madison Square Gardens tonight, which is what my wife is watching in the living room right now. I believe he's done a concert there once a month for over ten years consecutively, and every show sold out.
If you want to see him cover other genres I recommend "Longest Time" which is a acapella song, "Still Rock n Roll to Me" which is a rockabilly song, "Big Man on Mulberry Street" which is a blues rock song, and "Baby Grand" which is a blues song. I also recommend "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" which are three songs which weren't so he combined them into one song made of vignettes with the framing device of being set at an Italian restaurant.
I don't know how old you are, but every time I hear "Big Man On Mulberry Street" it always makes me think of the TV series "Moonlighting". They used the song in a dream sequence.
FYI, Billy used to get bullied when he was a kid because of his size, and he decided to do something about it and became amateur Golden Gloves boxer. Also, he didn't want to take piano lessons (another reason why he was bullied), but his Mother pushed him to do it (and I'll be he is so thankful that she did - and so is the rest of the world).
Every Billy Joel album is different from every other one. But Billy Joel always sounds like Billy Joel. For another twist, see the official video for River Of Dreams.
My band used to do “You May Be Right”, which is one of Billy’s Bangers! Also check out River of Dreams if you want to get blown away again. The song that makes me tear up every time - and those who have young children will get hit even harder - is called Lullabye. It’s devastatingly lovely.
Great videos: Tell Her About It, Pressure, River of Dreams. You should also check out Goodnight Saigon - - it's so beautiful. Two other recommendations: Old Grey Whistle Test performance of Root Beer Rag (no singing/just amazing piano) and a song called A Room of Our Own which is almost hard rock/funk/blues - - really cool. Billy wrote Uptown Girl for Christie Brinkley, when they were dating. They have been divorced for a while but are still friends. There's footage from a concert he did last week where he and the audience serenaded her with Uptown Girl, and she was dancing and stuff. She still looks - - wow.
p.s. Billy is his own genre - - kind of like Elton John. They've toured together. This street scene was truly impromptu for the people there - - just a free, surprise concert. This was somewhere near St. Mark's Place, Lower East Side NYC.
FYI - Billy Joel does the voice of Dodger in Disneys Oliver & Company.. he plays the piano.. he sings.. he wears sunglasses.. exactly what Billy Joel as a dog would be..
Apart from his first amazing album Cold Spring Harbour, every album is a reaction to/ or tribute to a generational or genre type he loves. Genuinely one of the greatest songwriters in the Western canon. A genius!
Write these songs down to react to next by Billy Joel: "Only The Good Die Young", "Keeping The Faith", "Big Shot", "River Of Dreams", "Tell Her About It", "The Longest Time". Those songs there are a nice variety in different styles and is still just some of his biggest hits and best songs. Still plenty left to react to, but those 6 should be up next.
Another great reaction from the FUQ Boyz! You can't go wrong with Billy Joel, and you never know what genre you're gonna get. Please react to The Stranger.
The River of Dreams is another whole vibe. He is an incredible song writer. He once said on one of the late night talk shows that has never considered himself a real vocalist. Who ever the host was laughed out loud & told him that the whole world would disagree!
I don't know if anyone has commented on this BUT AFTER like 1981/82 he was in a motorcycle accident that almost killed him and he had complete reconstructive surgery on his face. So a WHOOOOOOLE NUTHA LAYA is not ONLY is he versatile AND a MUSICAL GENIUS you're looking at LITERALLY the REBIRTH of the SAME TALENT 🤯
My favorite Billy Joel song! Music is the best, and the lyrics outstanding. Love the line "I won't hold back anything and I'll walk away a fool or a king." You've gotta commit to it, no matter how it turns out!
Dude is a class act! He got tired of scalpers buying up all the front row seating at his concerts and selling them way overpriced so he held back the first two rows of tickets and gave them to his road crew who handed them out to the real fans in the back seats! Respect!
Tha'ts awesome. I did something similar at a pro baseball game that I got tickets to from a vendor. 1st 2 seats off of 3rd base dugout front row. Wife and I stayed for 2 innings and then walked to the top of the stadium, last row, and randomly picked out 2 people on the last row and gave them the 2 tickets. They absolutely freaked out...and it was awesome. They were kinda happy. :)
Not sure how I missed this one, but u should just go thru this man's whole catalog!! I would definitely be down for u to revisit We didn't start the fire! It's one of my favorites by him! New York State of Mind, The Longest Time, Vienna, My Life, River of dreams, You may be right, & Movin out are just a few other good ones! 😁
Hello, great reaction. I am watching this video of the presentation of the Award of Merit to Billy joel and the live compilation of Billy Joel's hits at the 1998 American Music Awards. It starts at 2:15 minutes of the video. Several artists and groups sing sections of his songs with reworked lyrics directed towards him. "Billy Joel's the pianoman."... You've only reacted to some of them, but you will still enjoy it. The first 2:14 minutes are the awarding of Garth Brooks for best country album of 1998.
So thankful to have been born in the sixties, the great music we got to enjoy in real time. This generation of people doing reaction videos have just barely scratched the surface. The rabbit hole is deep, but the musical ride is fantastic.😊 Goodnight Siagon is must listen. One of the best tributes to Vietnam veterans.
River of Dreams, For the Longest Time, Movin' Out, New York State of Mind, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Still Rock and Roll to Me are a few more songs you might like. Another deep rabbit hole to your list...lol.
Billy Joel is a true music chameleon. You haven’t even touched upon his absolutely beautiful ballads. And so it goes is pure poetry. She’s always a woman, she’s got a way, And just the Way you are are some of the most beautiful songs you’ll ever hear
Starting with piano man Billy Joel entered into the top 10 best selling artists and he stayed in the top 10 for 20 years , amazing , he evolved with the times. Instead of revisiting just continue exploring , for example he did a song during the punk rock Era called " its still rock & roll to me " and it was also a hit. It's not as punky but shows how he responds to the times. No wonder he stayed in the top 10. BTW, he also has played Madison Square gardens way more then any other artist , almost always a sell out crowd. Billy currently ranks #7 of best selling artists. Elvis Presley did not Write his music , Billy Joel wrote 40 of which 33 were hits.
Obsessed with this song to this day. They actually did do that live so everything they’re showing in that video is what happened real time and that lady screaming out the window is timeless.
Billy Joel - "YOU'RE ONLY HUMAN" (SECOND WIND) Official Video and "RIVER OF DREAMS" Official Video are songs/videos you must react to! @ 5:30 Cam zooms in on Ringo Starr (white shirt, light colored pants, sunglasses, and sideburns) of The Beatles, standing on the sidewalk listening! So many songs by Billy Joel to check out. The diversity of his music and the style that he incorporates is incredible. He cannot be pigeon hold into a specific category. Check out - "Pressure", "Allentown", "Laura", "Goodnight Saigon", "Big Shot", "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", "My Life", "The Stranger", "Still Rock n Roll to Me". The catalog of music is huge
Thanks so much for not doing patreon ,… I really appreciate that! As a single mom working as a nurse in an hospital: I could and would not want to afford patreon. You reach my heart with your reactions and this philosophy… it’s my only me-time after my shifts, while my little girl is sleeping! ❤
I hadn't heard this one in ages. I must not have been introduced to "This is Spinal Tap" movie at the time because I don't remember Billy's reference to the classic "amp turned to 11" part. Anything by Billy Joel is awesome. I still remember his song "My Life" being the theme song from the TV show "Bossom Buddies" which launched Tom Hanks' career & was NEVER missed by my family. That beginning of the show was great.
"The Longest Time" is one of my favorite songs by him. It's from an ablum he did as a tribute to Do-wop and music from the 50's and 60's (it was the same ablum that had Uptown Girl on it.) The reason it's one of my favorites is because of how he recorded it. Every voice on it, in every range, is his. No one else sang that song on the Album.
Billy Joel is a fascinating song writer and an artist. Anyways check also out another classic group Fleetwood Mac. For example THE Chain live from The Dance 1997😊
You really need to hit River of Dreams! Been a BJ fan since The Stranger album in the 70’s, but Dreams gets me spiritually…incredible. He will always be my Piano Man!!
Billy Joel is one of the greatest. I saw him in concert in the 80s, at Madison Square Garden. It was a great concert. I was a teen when I went with my sister, who was a teen as well. Memories. Lol. You should listen to Wild Cherry, Play that Funky Music. I think you would enjoy it. You should also listen to Barbara Streisand, The Way We Were, anything from Carol Kings Tapestry album... So many greats! I grew up in the 70s and 80s. We had such diverse music. We didn't particularly listen to any one type of genre. We were familiar with them all. I grew up in NYC and country was played, disco, funk, r&b, jazz, musicals, instrumental, oldies but goodies, rap, everything! We were exposed to it all.
You need to catch his concert at Madison Square Garden. He started I believe in 2014 and he just did his hundredth sold out show Madison Square Garden longest in resident performer.
"Longest time" is friggin acapella, and actually good. He's one of those GOATs.....
Not only is it acappella, it’s all Billy Joel.
It’s not 100% a capella. There’s a bass line playing throughout.
@@Calinicus72
True
Ummmmm... a bass line can be done acapella. & it is in many many groups & songs. Thus, acapella. 😂😂❤@@Calinicus72
I sang that in 7th grade chorus for my final exam. We teamed up in groups of 4 and all had to pick a song. 😂

@@seanscanlon9067 I did not know that, but it doesn't surprise me. Thanks for the info, I guess my intuition knew. 😄
Wait ‘til you hear Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind”! With your family being from NYC, you’ll relate and enjoy.
It's called "versatility" and what is sorely lacking today in most music.
I also call it talent 😉
@@analuisahering2043 Absolutely!
andrea - You are a cliche!
Just the Way you are~ The Stranger~Anthony's Song~Always a Woman. Billy Joel is THE piano man !
Defintely "The Stranger" but I would add "Until The Night", "Stiletto" and "In the Middle of the Night."
And “Honesty”
@@goosebump801 Not forgetting Goodnight Saigon - a true tear jerker
@@stevedarragh I agree - that and Allentown are a couple of his most poignant 😢
And The Angry Young Man, Downeaster Alexa, An Innocent Man, Only The Good Die Young, Scenes from An Italian Restaurant and so many more 💕
Most keep forgetting "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" which will give you yet another side to Billy. Peace, Love!!
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, and Longest Time
Live From Long Island.

Tutti gioielli i pezzi suoi
He wasn't "acting"...he was just being Billy.
Billy is doing his 100th concert at Madison Square Gardens tonight, which is what my wife is watching in the living room right now. I believe he's done a concert there once a month for over ten years consecutively, and every show sold out.
That blond in the background with the baby is Christy Brinkley, his wife with their baby Alexa. And he has sold out Madison Square Garden 100 times.
Alexa is full grown now!Boy am I old!
I was gonna say that!
Also, she was named Alexa Ray, the second name after Ray Charles with whom he duetted on a song called My Baby Grand - definitely worth a listen.
Yes that was Christy and their daughter. She was in several of his videos including Uptown Girl!!!!
If you want to see him cover other genres I recommend "Longest Time" which is a acapella song, "Still Rock n Roll to Me" which is a rockabilly song, "Big Man on Mulberry Street" which is a blues rock song, and "Baby Grand" which is a blues song.
