I had similar thoughts about Viren too. The first season kinda ended on a villainous note for him, but Viren truly seemed to care about Harrow and his family in this episode.
SPOILERS FOR THE END OF SEASON 2
It is very important that Calum is 100% human... Because if he is not and he can do magic because he is x% elf or something then that means humans can't do magic... and that would mean Viren and Claudia are right to use dark magic...

If Xadia had been planning an attack I think it would have started when they got Runaar's message arrow. Amaya retreated because the elf with the sun forged blade was pushing her limits and she didn't want to risk an extended fight, especially if others were coming.

I like the part where Rayla says I can slash and slash with both swords again I can clap do a handstand and I also like when she jumps down and does a gymnastic style landing and they applause to her perfect landing
