Ancient History ASMR: The Mysterious Island of Thule (book tracing, soft spoken)

  • Hello, hello! Apparently I'm in an ancient history mood at the moment, so let's take another dive into antiquitiy this time. Today we're following the astronomer Pytheas, who in about 300 BCE went on a journey of discovery to the far north, following the tin route. His book "On the Ocean" unfortunately got lost, but we know from other accounts that he made his way to Britain and from there, Barbarians showed him "where the sun goes to rest": another six day journey across the sea and there was the island he called Thule. It has been assumed for a long time that Thule must be Iceland, though in recent times, other theories have emerged, suggesting Smøla in Norway and Saaremaa in Estonia.
Triggers include a soft spoken voice with a light accent, dynamic camera work, pointing, tracing, page flipping and an all around relaxing and educational story to fall asleep to. I hope you're all doing very well and that you can make time for peaceful and restorative moments. You deserve it!
The absolutely gorgeous book is by Juha Nurminen and Matti Lainema. It's called "A History of Arctic Exploration: Discovery, Adventure and Endurance at the Top of the World".

Wonderful to wake and see you exploring the north west lands of antiquity. Many, many myths awaken from the sub-conscious and very interesting to explore the mythology around Thule. Wonderful book that seems to be put together by some Finno-Ugric who have strong mythological and folkloric connections with the now sunken north-western lands that go by many names. Seems to me Thule is most likely Iceland as a remnant land of the north-west of antiquity. Maybe not as the Norwegian and Estonian connections also feed in well as possibilities. Very interesting to hear of Pytheas descriptions of the type of human habitation he was describing within Thule around 300 BCE.
Will be watching again and look forward to your Viking explorations within this book. Thank You Melange.

Thank you! It's a really interesting topic and just wild to me under what cirucmstances people made this kind of voyage back then. It's a shame Pytheas' book hasn't survived, it would be a fascinating text. And yes, the authors of the book also seem to be leaning towards Iceland or Norway. The text about Estonia seemed suspiciousy diplomatic at times haha.
Thank you so much for your comments, I'm very happy you're enjoying the subjects :)

Oh, I think I basically only knew the name and didn't know the exact history behind the name, that was very interesting.
Saaremaa as Thule... yeah, that theory does sound like it has some less than academic reasons behind it... but then, I'd say Nansen proposing Norway is pretty comparable in that regard...
Saaremaa is west of the coast of Estonia, by the way. :-)

They wouldn't have discovered America or have mapped the coastline so would not be able to see South America would fit into the side of Africa? I'm going by memory and can't visualize it. Weren't all the continents originally one land mass and they were separated by the movement of Tectonic Plates? When my nephew was 5, I said to him, "I used to be a thick Yorkshireman" - he said, in front of the whole family, "You still are!" Thick used to mean stupid (Only in Yorkshire?) - it has a new meaning.

Ahaha your nephew sounds like a great kid!
The continents do look like that, yes, but at the time they didn't have the means to travel across the ocean. The North is as far as they got :)

Thanks, Melange. I also appreciate all the replies you’ve made to my comments. I am still shocked that you offer personalized messages when you have soooo many subscribers now. Sorry to hear about your sleeping issues, but it sounds like you've found a great way to handle it. 💛 Often, when I can't sleep, just the stress I cause myself over feeling like I mustn't be awake right now, is half the issue, so I think yours really is a great approach.
I hope you're having a wonderful day and a great start to the weekend!

Is it possible that the pack ice actually reached farther south during his time?
