Found this channel last week, and I'm so glad I did. I personally don't watch ASMR to sleep, instead I watch it to relax. So finding this channel has giving me an win-win situation by relaxing and learning about different subjects at the same time 😂

The town along to where I grew up in Norfolk. Hold a yearly Viking event. Celebrating the Viking settlement of my county. And at the end of the festival the burn a Viking longship in the North Sea
This is one of my favourites so far. If you come to the UK again the perfect place for you to visit would be the Jorvik Viking Centre in York. It is a big tourist attraction. When I was at university I took a course in Viking studies and the professor who taught me was involved in setting it up. I think you’d enjoy it. Thank you for another great video.

Your language skills, especially coming from within the German speaking region, are one of the best tools to get into the roots of these Viking/Norse origins. Together with the symbols. Really liked how you described the association with animal spirits by the Vikings. The shapeshifting mindset - things like Wayland's story that has the art symbolizing it all. Magic. Great. Really enjoyed this. Thanks.
Hey, thank you so much! I'm completely with you there, that mythology part was one of my favourite things I came across in Oslo. The exhibition was so well presented, it was magical. And it's funny, in hindsight, I realized how much of that mythology and worldview turns up in Eggers' The Northman which I watched earlier this year and at the time just seemed eccentric and weird to me haha. (I don't know what your taste in movies is like, but I loved that one, so I can definitely recommend it!)
I actually went to Norway back in June and went to that exact reconstruction that you talk about at 23:15. Amazing place to be. In the longhouse, they have men and women dressed up and doing day to day tasks like the Vikings would(cooking,sewing,knitting, etc.). My mom and sister also got to sail in an authentic Viking ship as well. Too bad I can’t put pictures in this comment because I have some good ones

So funny to see you mentioned Vorbasse in this episode Melange! I grew up 20 km from there. And you are right, basically the whole village shifted plots 8-10 times, so the village moved hundreds of meters from where it started over a span of 300 years. I think the main theory is that it is because everything was built in wood, so the houses and other constructions had a natural lifespan of 30 years, before the posts and walls burried in the ground began to rot. So instead of cleaning all your mess, it was easier to just move 100 meter down the road, and start construction on virgin lands. Vorbasse is kind of funny, today the biggest open air market in Denmark is hosted there in the summer, with 250-300.000 visitors over 3 days each summer. Maybe the marketdays go all the way back to the vikingage, who knows :) Thank you for an amazing video as always!

The book did mention that rot was a big issue but only wrt to preparing the foundations in a specific way in order to avoid it from occurring. I would not have thought that just moving the whole village might be the easier solution haha. And funnily, I tried finding some more details on it online, but when you search for Vorbasse, you mainly find info about the market. Sounds like an interesting place to visit!
@@MelangeASMR Well I guess it is true, it is a small world, especially in an online community :) Yeah they used to burn the wooden posts in that end, that they would put in the ground, and then give it a layer of tar to protect it. But they still did rot, but normally they could reuse quite a lot of the inner timber and the roof construction, so it was mostly the foundation, walls and roofbearing posts they had to rebuild. Well there is not much to see today in Vorbasse, it is just a sleepy town. Visit nearby Jelling or Ribe instead for vikinghistory, if you ever come by. Have a great day, and thank you for the chat!

If anyone is interested in some viking mystery, I suggest looking up Salme ships. It's a ship burial with the oldest known vessel that has sailed in the Baltic sea. A swedish origin king(believed) was buried there along with 41 men who died in a battle.

There is a show called Vikings on Amazon prime that I was watching bfore this channel. I’m really surprised how accurate the show is after watching these vids
It is a real shame how Vikings - Saxons also - are depicted in tv and movies. They had such amazing colours and jewellery and metal works. Yet all tv shows do is cover them in leather.
Ah I forgot to mention that, it said that in the book that both men and women wore make-up and were described by a traveller as the most gorgeous people he'd ever seen haha, so someone was smitten by it...
@@MelangeASMR Yes I’ve heard that. Not makeup as we understand, you know foundation, lipstick and such; things such as paint, eyeliner and perhaps tattoos might all have been regarded makeup in times of old.

The largest Viking city is not on this old map. Uppåkra in Skåne, the South of Sweden is by far the largest city that has been found. Unfortunately it has not been dug out. Because of the cost and national politics. Swedens instituions rather spend money on Birka, because it is seen as more important in Stockholms history. And Denmark cares more about Hedeby and Ribe because its within their own borders. Uppåkra was twice as big as Hedeby and five to six times bigger than Birka. Hedeby being by far the second biggest viking city.

The island I’m from in Scotland has a history with Vikings, we have a Viking longship burial on the coast and many village names have Viking origins
