    He`s playing a Yamaha FG5. I bought the FG3 (Chinese made), also a great guitar, but slightly cheaper. I just got the FS 5, OM -model. Now that`s bang for the buck, I highly recommend it. Great tutorial, Thanks !

    Not everyone is cut out to teach, many good musicians but who don’t at all make good teachers are out there charging for lessons instead of getting a day job!
    Each student is different but it seems many curricula don’t emphasize triads and from what I’ve seen in books and the net most don’t teach them at all.
    It was Jody Fisher’s Beginning Jazz Guitar with its page on triad string sets that blew my mind and really taught me how music works in the guitar.
    F Major triad and watching my finger move a fret lower to make it a minor…that’s all she wrote! 😂
    I believe triads should be studied even before the open chords.

    I never comment on internet stuff, but this lesson is like a great white of internet guitar lessons so I figured I would comment. Echoing other comments, your down to earth style and easy demeanor really go down easily. Thanks for these videos.
    One of my favorite "aha!" moments learning guitar was realizing that if I moved bar chords up the next I COULD PLAY EVERY SINGLE chord! I can still remember figuring this out while riding in the back of a pickup. It blew my mind, and allowed me to play along with so much popular music.

      Funny you mentioned "great white" I usually do these vids in my music room and there's a Jaws pic in the background. I'm pretty obsessed with sharks and anything ocean related.

    To keep playing i feel people have to develop improv or the ability to noodle, seeing basic connections of how chords progress, the mini movable shapes as you develop chord playing, and how to poke around a bit around them. I think people give up because playing basic scale and hot cross buns get dull very quickly. Improv makes 10,000 songs pour out of the guitar.

    Nice! Yeah no. 2 is so right. When you just learn scales but not how to use them you have no context which makes them harder to remember (for me at least)
    Lindsey Buckingham is why one of the reasons I started fingerpicking! One of my absolute faves is ‘never going back again’!

    In terms of playing acoustic vs electric, I know that in theory chords can be played in the exact same way on both guitars. But in the real world, are they? Can you think of triads that you often play on one guitar and not necessarily on the other?

    • @mrelmoresmusiclab
      @mrelmoresmusiclab  Месяц назад

      That is a really good question. I will say that when I play acoustic my duo I never play the chords the same way. I want different voicings on the acoustic to empahsize different sounds. I will say though, the triad shapes I am using here in this video, I do use both of those shapes on acoustic and electric. I think you gave me a really great idea for a video. Great question and I hope that makes sense.

  • @GMByteJavaTM
    @GMByteJavaTM Месяц назад

    I wonder if there's any tricks to understand what chords will match the scale you're playing. It's quite obvious with power chords, because it's litterally just you making the note you're playing more powerful despite of the key you're in (the laziest kind of chords to me) but whenever I try to combine scales with major and minor chords, it gets a bit trickier, since you somehow need to calculate whether the third falls within the range of you scale and what's even more confusing, there are songs where chord arrangment doesn't make sense to me, but still sounds good, like let's say the song is in A minor, and suddenly there's E major which is sort of not supposed to be there judging from my natural scale knowelege. Music theory is truely a wonder haha

    • @mrelmoresmusiclab
      @mrelmoresmusiclab  Месяц назад +2

      What's up my friend. Yes, you are sharing some great thoughts here. I think the theory part is awesome, but in the end you always have to use your ears. I definitely need to start making more music theory videos.
      I think one thing that might be helpful is to take a song we all know and tear is down and analyze it. I think that would make for a cool video idea and topic. Keep going and keep learning. You already know more than most. :)

    • @GMByteJavaTM
      @GMByteJavaTM Месяц назад

      @@mrelmoresmusiclab Yeah, that sounds like a cool idea, I should try to break down a couple of songs that way. And also probably take up the quinta circle of tonalities, as I understand that's the situation were that thing comes in handy. I've read somewhere, that according to music theory sometimes one key can kind of "turn into another", but that sounds totally like rocket science to me so far haha

    • @mrelmoresmusiclab
      @mrelmoresmusiclab  Месяц назад +1

      @@GMByteJavaTM Ha. Yeah, just use the circle of 5ths and that is a great foundation for basic understanding. In the end, there are no rules in music and just use your ears and if it sounds good to you, then it is good. What you mentioned earlier about an E in the key of A minor, that would just be the parallel major chord. Nirvana wrote so many tunes with borrowed chords from different keys. Kurt had no idea he was just a brilliant song writer with a brilliant ear.

    • @GMByteJavaTM
      @GMByteJavaTM Месяц назад

      @@mrelmoresmusiclab Yeah, it always amazes me how some of the greatest musicians barely knew any music theory. And at the same time there are lots of people with great music theory knowledge who cannot make a buck of it. Nor become famous either. So yeah, music theory is good, but it doesn't guarantee anyone being a good musician

    • @mrelmoresmusiclab
      @mrelmoresmusiclab  Месяц назад +1

      Very true, I will also say that timing and luck come into play as well. You might get lucky and end up creating music with the right group of people and magic happens. In the end, create music for yourself and your happiness. That is always the most important.

  • @kmabarrettyt

    Naw, Jellyfish man, Jellyfish!! Just kidding... 24-26ft great white (est in the movie). Another great lesson. Just a side comment. I was watching a vid on beginning finger picking and the guy said he was filming in the sunlight because it made the strings "look" like they were vibrating more (a shadow effect) which would make it easier for us (the viewer) to see which string he was hitting. I don't know enough about lighting to advise how to match that effect indoors. My problem is you are still covering your index finger and most of your middle finger with your thumb, so it's difficult to figure out what you're string you're striking (and with what finger). It doesn't look like you are religiously striking G w/ I, B w/ M, and e w/ A:R. I also can't tell if you are hitting two fingers / strings at the same time (or thumb and one finger at the same time). I don't have a printer, so I copy the attachments by hand, and I'm not seeing an indication of the fingerings. I haven't done them all, so if you are showing that on some, I guess I've just missed it. ...Anyway, like I said, another valuable lesson.

    • @mrelmoresmusiclab
      @mrelmoresmusiclab  Месяц назад +1

      haha. That's one massive Whitey. ha. I will see if I can do a livestream possibly tomorrow and I will go through all of this in great detail. I can tell you that I am doing a lot of the stuff consistently, but there is probably some nuances happening too. Kind of just how I developed my own playing style. I will see if I can actually tab out a bunch of these ideas this work for you and everybody else. Just try to be as musical as you can and focus on keeping the groove at all costs. That will always sound good. Keep going Jellyfish.

    • @kmabarrettyt
      @kmabarrettyt Месяц назад

      @@mrelmoresmusiclab I guess the "best" advice is to just keep practicing... I started with a pic and have been trying to learn fingerpicking. I can kind of get it, but I can't quite get the fingers to pick / release the strings consistently. Again, I'm just putting it down to more practice requited.
