LOVE THE GUITAR YOU'RE WITH! Do you really need another guitar?

  • We all suffer from 'the grass is greener' with our guitars - but here's a video encouraging you to appreciate the one you have. Not that I'm saying you don't need another one (or ten), but we should appreciate the character of our current guitar(s) first perhaps?

Thanks for sharing all classical guitar no matter how good it is, does have it own acoustic sound characteristics when played all over the fretboard. It all depends on the make and type of wood used in the process for making the parts of the guitar.

My favourite guitar came out of a skip (dumpster) . It was covered in green gloss paint , strings and tuning heads also . I stripped it and cleaned it and restrung it 35 years ago . Under the paint was a 50 to 70 year old hand built three quarter sized Spanish guitar . Part of a label inside read “ Valencia . Escalano n/o 25 “ . Very quirky and hard to tune but oozing character and lots of fun to play with a unique tone . Very rare but probably not worth hardly anything financially . If my house was burning down I would grab that guitar as opposed to my seagull or my takamine or anything else I own . I love it .

I started with a classical guitar, but switched to a flamenco guitar because of the very low action. And yes, for those who play flamenco guitar love fret buzz, because it is part of the character. So, that is it for me, I am not a guitar collector with a room full of guitars, in cases collecting dust.

So true! I always think I need to upgrade my hands, rather than the instrument....back to practising, I guess....

Very interesting video ,I have 2 steel string guitars and one classical guitar .the classical guitar was in a charity shop I spent some time on it and it plays very well .the one steel string has had problems with buzzing ever since I have had it so I put heavier strings on it tuned it down a tone and now play it with a capo on the 2nd fret and it sounds a lot better than when it was new the other guitar I brought off of Amazon it was quite cheap so I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised it even sounds nice playing some classical pieces on it.

Interesting video thank you. I agree with the 95/3/2… it’s not about the guitar. Some people could play anything and make it sound good.
I’ve bought plenty, but the truth is X or Y guitar won’t mean that your playing will transform. There, I’ve said it 😂.
Our expectations are often too high. I’m at the point where enjoying playing the instrument and making any kind of music is more important than the result. I still marvel that I can play anything at all.

Truth is I have too many, I certainly could bring the count down.... well it's only 12. That is not bad at all.
    Very modest I would think.😊

I'm playing a nice intro classical guitar, using it as an acoustic guitar. I enjoy it very much but know it would be more pleasurable if the neck was narrower. So even tho I wouldn't want a house full of guitars, it would be nice to have a nylon string acoustic with a narrower neck than my classical. If I find one that I can afford, I'll probably get it. Two guitars are plenty for me.

    From u.k.
    I’m 67 now!
Bought, sold, exchanged, given away, acoustic,
electric, high end and cheap, guitars!
I can’t help myself, out and about I like the look
    of one I buy it!
My two lads benefitted from this they are and still
play in bands, now in their mid thirties.
I should be a better player than I am but do other
    things as well.
Sold all of them off a few years ago and just kept
an ADMIRA classical, worth around 250 quid.
    Better for my fingers!
And a tanglewood baritone ukulele, wished I would have
known about the baritone uke earlier!
D.G.B. tuning, having played a little guitar over years
and being lazy at it, the baritone uke was a damn sight easier
    for me!
As I’ve said I’ve dealt a lot with guitars over the years.
Regarding acoustic, as you said certain probs!
But the ADMIRA CLASSICAL I kept is about 15 years old.
If I tune it up, irrespective of time of year and don’t play it
for a month, 4 out of 6 strings are NEVER out of tune!
And the other 2 hardly need tuning.
The other classical I have is a ALHAMBRA classical mid 1960s
Which I leave in D.A.D.G.A.D. Got that in a car boot sale for 3 quid!
Deep sound, low action which drew me in!
Machine heads a little stiff, drop of oil, all o.k.
Looked up the brand on google worth 300 quid!
Never selling that one, got a DEAN acoustic for a fiver
    last week!
    Here I go again!🤪
    Agree with your comment!

Yes, I'm always impressed with both Admira and Alhambra - I suggest them both to my students.

I try to play electric guitar and they have quirks as well. These are 2 cheap guitars, same make and model, and each sounds different without the amp. So your statement rings very true to me, especially as you have a beautiful sounding guitar, and not "cheap" like my bits of wood. Loved your percentages. Could a newer toy make you a better player , no way!

Ive had so many guitars in my time, sold many too. Recently I had a choice to make between a tanglewood and a highschool yamaha, and decidedto keepthe yamaha and sell off the tanglewood. I dont know what it is about the yamaha, I just seem to prefer it.

Read my reply under mad Cyril.
      Tanglewood or Yamaha?
      Can’t call it!
I have a Tanglewood baritone ukulele which sounds a little
better than a few in its class.
All down to personal choice, but I know what you mean.

Do you use a cloth or a special shirt to protect the back & French polish from scratches etc.? It is so easy to do you might as well not even try i think. Maple makes a really nice sound. There are quite a few English luthiers. There is a Englishman living in Paris, Adrian Savory or something like that & he makes some amazing sounding guitars, his "modified lattice" especially. You are right on as far as giving it time with a guitar. Your hands will adapt with time. When you shop you will know it when you feel it. Thanks.

I don't really worry about scratches and things - so my guitars get quite a few dings and dents week after week. Maybe I should be more careful!

Now don't leave us hanging. What guitar is it? The maple back and sides with spruce top likely a flamenco "blanca" style rather than truly a classical. If not for the extra fret on the first string, I would say a Yamaha flamenco.

    • @rikroberts1754

@@GarySchiltz It's a luthier made classical guitar actually - made by a local chap and it's one of a kind really.

I mean, if the action is low enough and maybe no dead frets, its fine, and if your fingers are really having a hard time with playing chords, switch to earnie ball slinky strings for electric guitar, SOOOO MUCH easier to fret chords, And really, the sound is FINE for a beginner. You can switch back after you get more hand strength and better callous.
