One thing I found across hollow knight bosses is pretty small movesets. The majority of them don't really have more than 5-6 moves. But I also love how distinct each attack is - you always know which specific attack they're about to use. Unlike some games, like bloodborne, where if a boss is telegraphing something with their arm, it could mean 10 different things.
Somebody once said that Laurence from the old hunters DLC has around 40 different attacks. However, they are so similar that you don’t really remember more than 5 of his moves. I love bosses with a large move set, because it helps keeping the boss fresh, but bosses like Laurence really needed more memorable attacks. Now, he’s is just seen as a asset flip from Cleric Beast, and rightfully so.
I feel like having 5 to 6 moves is enough for a boss fight, especially in the 2d platform, take Pure vessel for example. he has 3 moves at the start, Charge, 3 hit combo and projectiles, But he's soo fast that you have to anticipate each attack and dodge accordingly, and further into the boss fight, he adds two new attacks that you have to pay attention to within the mix. I like this style of boss fight. It's also the same concept in my favorite Elden Ring boss fight, Godfrey/Horah Loux.
The False Knight, if you hang out in the arena after they're defeated the hammer ball pops off the stick and turns into a bug that crawls away. One of the funniest little moments in the game.
I just wanted to say that im incredibly thankfull of finding your channel, i wasn't in the best place but i started watching you after it started to get alot better. Your one of my favorite comfort youtubers for that. Keep up the great content man:)❤
I adore your timing, my friend. About to start a 10 hour night shift and this pops into my feed, your videos are always a great start to my work so thank you!! Also Happy Birthday!
Just discovered your channel and really loving it. About Markoth, tho - he's significantly easier and less frustrating when you actively use nail arts - they allow you to safely hit him without needing to come close to him and without requiring any soul. Same goes for most flying enemies really - nail arts trivialize them. Also, about the collector: 1) The grub father doesn't consume his children - he becomes a cocoon for them to move to their new stage of life. And the most likely reason to why Collector kidnapped and spread them across the entire kingdom is because the grubs are the first stage in the forming of a new god moth (There's a secret room in the ceiling of the tower of love with a scheme of a grub pointing at their significance) - and obviously, Pale King and his aristocrats wouldn't want another potential Radiance around. Another detail pointing at it is the fact that grubs appear to be near unkillable - almost all the other creatures in Collector's jar all died of infection and/or starvation but grubs? They're absolutely fine, even after being locked away in completely desolated places for a very long period of time. 2) The collector's personality is actually their own - just driven to madness due to loneliness and Pale King's spell influence. Void is basically "soul oil" - ancient souls of the dead across the world slowly accumulating in the abyss and then slowly becoming a new life as lifeblood grows from it (if told extremely sortly). The point it - void creatures have personality but need extra focus to show it. The whole "no mind, no voice, no will" thing is just PK's spell forced on them by his contraptions but not their natural state. After all, not only does the collector have a personality - they also have a very clear voice which already breaks the whole myth (and there's a literal spell called "abyss shriek" which is a collection of vengeful voices of oppressed void creatures speaking up). Also, literally the entire tragedy of Pure Vessel was that they had feelings and a personality despite PK originally trying to get a creature without those qualities.
I played Hollow Knight back in 2018, but never made it too far. I definitely made it through the first couple of areas but dropped it around the halfway point I believe. This series might just convince me to pick it back up. Happy birthday Billy!!!
I dont know how actually effective this is, but I've found that constantly pogoing off of the watcher knights and the god tamers beast when theres damage opportunities can make their fights trivial
Hollow Knight is my favorite game of all time and I have replayed it so many times... and yet I keep forgetting about the Flukermarm lol Because everytime the "fight" with her only consist of getting beneath her, doing two abyss shriek and that's it, would hardly even call her a boss fight tbh
@@BillySYT I'd agree, but seeing someone else get Radiant Markoth with that move pushed me to learn it and I was able to manage that feat myself, two thirds to three quarters of the way through radianting bosses (I still haven't finished lol)
Watcher Knights are super underrated, very few things in the game gives you more adrenaline than two Watcher Knights rolling at you. Fromsoft wishes they could make gank bosses this good.
I really like the Watcher Knights. It took me a long time to enjoy them but after playing the game for so long, I think it's a pretty fair challenge for how late they show up.
Honestly, despite them placing this low, I still consider them a great and well telegraphed fight. Hollow Knight just doesn't miss when it comes to it's boss fights.
First of all, nice to see the Hollow Knight ranking here, it shows that you have put a lot of work into this one! While I agree with most of the takes (especially with Marmu and Obblobes, fuck them), I also have to disagree with some. For me, putting Markoth on the last place is a crime. He is by far the most thrilling fights from all of the dreamers. I get that he may be frustrating at times, especially on radiant, but he encourage you to use all of your tools, he is much easier with proper use of nail arts and spells. I don't say he is top 5 boss, but he should be at least top 20 for me. As for Watcher Knights, it is such a joy to fight them with low equipment when you get used to it. Easily top 10 at least, maybe the contestant for the best fight in the base game. I am also surprised to not see Uumuu in the lower part of the list, maybe this is part of an amateur speedrunner bias, but I hate him from the bottom of my hearth. Great for story purpose with Quirrel, but besides that it is just a terrible fight that is just a waiting game that is also RNG depended. But these are just my thoughts. Great vid and it was nice to see HK on your channel, can't wait for part 2 & 3.
Hi I tried hollow knight could not get into it but still gonna watch this video also do you know when the demon souls boss difficulty will be out and my 2 question have you played cuphead but anyway I bet it will be a great video that I can actually relate to considering I have only beat dark souls one and demon souls and I am currently beating dark souls 2 also I love you content happy birthday
1 - The Demon's Souls boss difficulty will be out later this month. The poll is continuing until the 8th, so expect it some time after. 2 - I've played Cuphead before, yes. I want to revisit it at some point, possibly next year? 3 - Thanks for the birthday wishes ^^
Seeing the False Knight in number 40 say something about Hollow Knight bosses quality. This game is so great. My only disappointment is that Zote the Almighty will not be number 1... Hardest boss of the game for me, such an epic fight And happy birthday ! 🙏
During 2021 I became completely addicted to hollow knight, I beat every boss, explored every area and obtained every upgrade. But the pantheon of hallow est was far to difficult for me, and so I could not complete the game to 112%😢
Marmu just feels bugged, sometimes even when you nail him he just goes straight through you, which is such a pain on p5 when you try to save up lives. Markoth is the worst on Radiant, but otherwise he is fine - I did also play this game way too much, and would probably feel different if it was after less hours played.
Markoth radiant was mu absolute worst time in Hollow knight Took me like 6 hours to do it even though he has only 2 moves Also damn, did the watcher knights extremely dirty
I do feel bad for the Watcher Knights, in the sense that I recognize they're an extremely well designed boss. But I genuinely would rather fight the bosses above them if I had a gun to my head and was told to pick lol
Is it true that you couldn’t beat P5 or even reach AbsRad? I have a feeling you might have said that in a poll, but i’m not too sure. I don’t blame you though, because it’s tough as nails, but I’d encourage you to at least reach AbsRad if you can. I only managed to beat P5 because of tons of practice, but it’s definitely doable because almost all Bosses in HK are fairly designed. I also like how there are 2 new boss on your way to AbsRad in P5 in order to make the boss rush more spicy.
@@BillySYT That’s okay. I hope you beat AbsRad in the hall of gods though. At least you’ll then have the feeling of having beaten every boss in the game. Thank god the hit boxes in this game are nowhere as bad as in DS2. That would make P5 way more unbearable. Also is AbsRad in your top 15? Probably, but that’ll be a surprise for later, I suppose.
I think the ones you dislike should be higher up because they're at least more interesting. I hate radiant markoth (took me 5 hours, radiant abs rad took me 8) of course, and marmu is a little annoying, but massive moss charger is just kind of boring. But it's your list and I generally agree (I think watcher knights should be higher up though)
Great video, but I just wanted to ask… Why do people make their entire identity, online or even real life persona revolve around their sexuality? (Looking at your pfp) And I’m talking about masculine and straight, to gay and feminine guys. Just be a person man. A unique person. Don’t be a category. Don’t water down yourself. There's no way No Eyes and Uumuu aren't in the bottom 16 but Watcher Knights are that's insane.

It really puts the "masochistic" in masochistic completionist 🙂
It would be fun to see you do a run! I love this game.
Maybe I'll do an item randomizer run at some point ^^
That collector theory is really cool!

Dash Slash helps a lot with Markoth. Its hitbox is really long and can sneak past his inner dreamshield
