Hello, Jessica. I do use a 3mm crochet hook and I'm using cotton yarn, super fine. You can definitelly do it in one color.

That's ok, you can make 4 chains to start with and work a sl st in the first ch to form a circle. After that, you're ready to follow th erest of the steps to make the fish! :D
